umm its 5 or 10 dollars. Its worth it if you hate your name but it should only cost like a couple of dollars. Longman27
Did you even read my post?

Thanks.. I actually changed my name almost a year ago. I did it just because I wanted to have my name just a little different then I first conceived of it.

[/QUOTE my story is kinda funny my mum put the name up for me without telling me so i have to buy points now lol and you point on kids changing it was the only thing i never thought of i mean kids could just keep changing it all day for a laugh so it would never work right. but thanks anyway and im tracking you just to let you knowCome on guys. Do you really think your 'name' has any meaning in their systems? Our names are attached to a number, and that number never changes. Changing your gamertag is no different than updating your address or adding a friend. It's a field in a database. Charging money to allow you to do it is a complete injustice to the consumer. They found a way to get more money from their customers by putting a price on something that a gamer identifies closely with, namely their gamertag. I haven't verified if it actually costs 800 points to change your gamertag, but if it does, then Microsoft should be ashamed for exploiting their gamers in this manner. 800 to change your gamertag is completely and 100% unnacceptable.valdarez
Once again dude, you are missing the POINT. Changing your gamer tag is not even close to the same thing as updating your email address, lol.. listen to that.. Being able to change your gamer tag for free would create many, many problems. It would make identifying cheaters a lot more difficult. Besides, a gamer tag is an "on-line identity" It is like in real life. It is so people know who’s who. Imagine having your friends list one day and the next you didn't know who any of your friends were?? That would not work. There are many other reasons but pinning down cheaters is a good one alone.
its a ripoff, they should let u change it for free, wats it cost them?bolt2448The reason it is $10 is because they don't want people randomly changing their names all the time.
It is a lot.. And you know what I am glad it's a lot. It stops the little kids and noobs from changing thier on line identity every five minutes.. It is also a good way to keep track of on line cheaters, like the LITTLE kids who ruined Halo 2. dreamscottWhat do you mean?

its not a rip off there are reasons why they charge for that. Why does everyone have to complain and whine so much about how much things cost. They charge you to change your name because then you have to be VERY sure you want to change it. Imgaine tryin to manage you friends list when everyone is changing their name a round every day?? Thats one reason....the other reason is it keeps a stable list of gamertags....I changed my name once and i paid for it and didnt complain, because I UNDERSTAND that concept. Like the guy that started this thread...he hates his name, but he isnt sure if he should change it because he has to pay. THATS the point of the whole thing....

the reason why they they make you play $10 (US) in because its only like an emergency, once you regester a gamertag, that name ill be recorded in microsoft's xbox live servers, think if people kept changing there names, it would be hard for microsoft to band people from servers/games (they have to change all the leaderboards into different names and it would be hard for your friends to notice you). $10 is a good price because it makes gamers think its a ripoff and wont change there name, but if gamers do... microsoft just made some money.

Although I know that their DBA's have the know-how to handle such occurences, I do believe the price is used as a deterrent to stop frequent name changing.
It is a lot but I think it's like that to deter people from changing their name every 5 seconds.syntax__666agreed... i dont really understand why people would change them, who cares... as long as its nothing embarassing just play
its ridiculous and its just a way to squeeze a bit of extra money out of us. Almost £5 just to change a bunch of letters. WTF!!??

You are one of those random people who just "chime" in at the drop of a hat.. You didn't even read anyones post or even read the thread. Not really saying much for where you come from dude :|
Even if a cheater was to change his or her name. Wouldn't you have filed a complaint on them right after the match , so why would it matter if they changed their name. The gamertag has no meaning, except to us. So the complaint would go on the persons identification number not their name. My advice is who cares. Change it if you want to. Dont bother people with stupid a post about you being poor and not wanting to spend money on your name. Then don't! Microsoft has only one reason to do this. MONEY!!!! Your buying it. They will keep charging for it.

Wrong again! wrong, wrong.. It is not just about Microsoft making money. They make plenty of mony in other ways.. Such as the on line subscription price to x-box live. The reason it costs money is because they don't want people just changing their "on line Idenity" at the drop of a hat. How would you like to check your friends list right now and not know who any of your friends are?? That is just one good reason alone..

I play several games where folks change their nicks constantly. If these guys are truly your friends, then you're going know when they change their nick. If you don't, odds are you shouldn't have them on your friends list. There is already a mechanism built in that allows you to identify cheats so to speak. You can given someone a bad reputation. However, if the goal is to avoid certain players, then I would prefer they add a feature that allows you to completely avoid a player, ever, in any game. This would be tied to their number, not their gamertag. If Microsoft wanted to charge for updating a gamertag, then make it a one time fee and then only allow the gamer to change it once a month (I still don't see the need for limiting it, but obviously many folks think it's important). The one time fee would be justified at that point as they had to build extra functionality to support the 'once a month change' limitiation (a limitiation which they would sell as a 'feature' heh).If the database is brought to it's knees due to folks changing their gamertags (which would be the exception, not the norm), then the database itself has issues. Someone mentioned leader boards having to be updated and the like.ray03314506I seriously doubt the leaderboards have your 'name' recorded. If designed properly the leaderboards have your number, not name, only retrieving your name when displaying the board to an end user. If they had to perform a String query to update the leaderboards for a gamertag, lol, then their DB Archs might want to start updating the ole resume.
