I have had my xbox360 now for a full year, and I have to ask a question. What is the big deal about acheivment?

I have 2105 acheivments, yes thats correct, only 2,105. Sure I could get more, absolutely, easy ones aswell, but whats in it for me? I hear people online all the time talking about how they need to do this or that to get a 5 point acheivment, then they spend 5 hours trying to get it. So your acheivments go from 10160 to 10165, was it worth 5 those 5 minutes? What hppens if you have more acheivments than anyone else, do you get a prize? Or is it just bragging rights, because I personally dont get it. So you fell off a 15ft ledge an dlived, or you grabbed the hidden gold coin out of the river, is that supposed to mean somethgin to me? Does that make you better than me?

Alot of my friends buy a game and play the campaing/story modejust to get the acheivment, than after a couple of weeks they being playing the multiplayer. Did those 200 or 300 acheivment points make you feel better?

Acheivment points were made to let people know what you did in a game, but now days games dont do any of that. Take a look at the new COD4, they have challenges in multiplayer, but those challenges arent acheivments, shouldI work just as hard for those aswell?

My point is thatI dont understand what the big deal about acheivments is, I have never heard anybody say to me "wow, you have a small gamer score", it just makes no sense.

achievement points were made to take advantage of people who care about worthless things like that, people buy crappy games for easy achievements.. also... what do u think someone who loves achievements is gonna do if a lot of the achievments are online? subscribe to gold membership ...sure they are made for people to feel a sense of accomplishment...but dont think thats the only reason ;)

*edit* im about to have my 360 for a year now...achievements are so easy to get... i mean, most of them u get through the course of a game... so if ur a decent gamer u should rack em up... i find it funny i have a higher gamerscore then some people who go all out just to raise their score up lol

Achievements and Gamerscore are all part of Microsoft's clever Marketting routine.

Gamerscore acts as bragging rights, giving the impression that a pro has lots of Gamerscore, while a nub has few. Its all a marketting gimick that feeds off Ego, and we all know some gamers just can't get over theirs; it is to THOSE sorts of people that this technique works best on, since their enormous Ego will tempt them into buying more games. Quite genius, actually.

I have 2820 Gamerpoints at this moment, most of which were picked up through regular gameplay, not going online and getting game guides to get that scrawny 5pt Achievement. Although it's a pretty small amount, I don't give a damn. It just shows that those guys who Binge on games just to get those Points are just weak-minded losers who are Microsoft's Tools for higher profits. Enjoy your Gamerscores guys.

I dotn see how its a good marketing scheme, I mean bragging rights. If you are bragging to your friends that you have a bigger gamerscore, their has got to be something wrong.

Achievements are made to take all the juice in the game and make people to take more time in the game instead of just passing the career mode and done. Achievements make you do things to take full use of the game.

They're just there for bragging rights. Besides, unlocking them is optional, so you don't have to pursuit them to unlock them if you don't want.

For me they always give me something to do on the weekends when I'm really busy with school/gf on the other hand. I'm proud of the mile high achievement because it was frustrating but fun. I got all the point and for the online. I'm going to complete all the challenges and then I might do prestige mode.(idk yet) I think more people would like them if they unlocked stuff in the game. It also notices me how far my friend is into the game so we could have a discussion about it.

Microsoft did do something awhile back where if you had or got achievements at a cartain time you received rewards - I dont remember the details cos I didn't know about it at the time and didn't get to experience it.

Playing a video game and getting achievements is better than playing a video game and not getting achievements. Since video games are just a diversion, really what difference does it make how people decide to play?

i'm sorry, i have nothing to say about your post, but i would like to comment on your sig. honestly, where do you shop? i bought a PS3 in like april and it cost me almost $700, and after i realized what a huge piece of garbage it was i got my 360 for less than $400.

Honestly i almost stop playing my xbox360, because i fell in the hype of the points. i felt like if the points in a game was to hard to get then im not going to buy it, which is dumb i know. But honestly who cares? the only ones that may care is the ones that get to 40,000 and higher for fun like Jeff Gerstmann. But everyone else just really don't care. But i have to say i reply more of my games now like prey and gears or war to get it, but only i played thorugh the game for fun first.

I think Microsoft should do something with the gamer points. Like instead of using Mircosoft points to buy stuff on Live, your gamerscore could be used. Yea your score will go down just like spending money but think about it. People will buy more games to get more points, which will add to microsofts sales. Plus be able to buy the points still too. But that is a much better idea then just bragging rights. Hopefully someone from Microsoft reads this lol.

Like everyone else said it simply adds to the gameplay value. It gives you something to aim for. I don't get all of them because some games get tired after too long. Right now I am playing Blue Dragon and it by far has the hardest Achievement of any 360 game. I love RPG and maxing out all the Potential that a game offer is an achievement in its self. But not you have all the braging rights. Personally I don't buy games to just to say I have them. I buy them because I want the experiance that it offers. Achievements often add to that. You may not like them because you are a one and done gamer. Many of us love it and It motivates a few one and Done gamers to adventre a little further into the game. Think about it!!!

achievements are a good thing. it keeps people from being retards and saying "yeah well I did this" when they actually didn't. you can check and see if they actually did it. I have over 20k for a GS. did I spend a lot of time doing it? no not really. I didn't spend countless hours getting stupid achievements. What's wrong with being able to prove that you did something? I think it's a pretty neat idea. yeah it can be a pain in the A$$ sometimes due to people who will only go for certain weapons in say gears of war because "Oh I need those kills!". big deal if it's just for bragging rights? I think it's better than nothing.

That would be cool except they cant do that. Too many people know how to copy acheivement points from their friends. Those people would get free stuff for absolutely nothing.

"I hear people online all the time talking about how they need to do this or that to get a 5 point acheivment, then they spend 5 hours trying to get it" well there you go, that's what's in it for you, more gametime, some ppl appreciate achievements, I say again; more gametime, and a sense of accomplishment to show how you play games, oh, and btw, those with the lowest scores always complain about this, I say; Sour grapes, if u don't like sour things... stay away from them, EASY >_>

Agreed. Although, I do have 7500 gamepoints, I attribute about 5k of that from being out of school for a semester and being bound to a wheelchair while having 0 responsibilities waiting for my leg to recover from surgery. Moreover, I have two other brothers who play alot of games. I consider myself a "gamer," and pretty much play videogames m-t everyday during my free time after my work is done. Weekends = Go out get f*ed up and hook up with underage girls weeee!!!

I don't get it either. I could care less about them. The points are useless. Why buy crappy games just for the achievement points? Just so you can brag? Sure you could come up to me and say I have 30000 gamerscore points. I would say, I don't care and get a life. I could see if you could use the points for something.

i have had my 360 for 19 months now and i have got 2185 gamer points. i really don't care about them and neither do any of my mates so there is no bragging there. i basically play games if they have a good multiplayer e.g halo 3 and gears of war or if i can just mess about on them e.g dead rising and crackdown. i hardly ever complete any single player modes. so all the gamer-points i have are from just general playing around and having fun. i do believe that they do add a lot of re-playability and that it is a very clever marketing scheme by Microsoft. also people who but/rent games just for the gamer-points or play for hours to get the extra 10 really need to get out more.

Acheivement points are for ego stroking. It provides a sense that you've gained something or doing something worth while. (example... notice alot of point 'whores' don't have much else but video games, it means something to them that their regular lives aren't providing.) Of course self denial will kill this arguement with the regular ignorant comments you'll see after these types of ego selves are hurt. It's not at the same level for everyone, but at some point it is all about ego, whether you want to acknowledge it or not.

It's really a pshychological thing whether you like the points or not... The whole reason Microsoft came up with them was to take advantage of this fact. It's the only reason the points would have any meaning at all.

If microsoft were smart they would implement some sort of reward system for achievement points. Even if it was just something small like complete 1000 points for a game and receive a free theme or gamerpic, or simply allow you to use achievement pics as a gamer pic.
Think about it, if you have both a 360 and a ps3, you're more likely to buy a multi-platform game on the 360 than the ps3 or wii because you will be able to get an extra something free out of it.

ok i'm gonna be honest i love getting achvments and raising my gamerscore. its the feeling and doing somethin and gettin rewarded for it unlike other systems that gets me pumped up.

alot of ppl ask whats the point in achvments and when u think of it negatively like that then there is no point at all. however i think of it a different way... like having the high score on a game. its just the sense of accomplishment that makes it worth the effort.

They add replay value, I've never once bragged about it. i have 14K and i dont really care, it just lets you get more out of each game. I wouldnt spend 5 hours for 5 points, it encourages me to play on the hardest difficulty, something i probably wouldn't do otherwise.

Microsoft did do something awhile back where if you had or got achievements at a cartain time you received rewards - I dont remember the details cos I didn't know about it at the time and didn't get to experience it.

I'm really shocked nobody's mentioned this other than billy here. The site used to be xbox.com/rewards, and you could register your gamertag. There were certain "Challenges" that they made, that you had certain time to 'achieve' persay, and you would get prizes based on your previous gamerscore. I believe there were three levels (low: 0-5000, Mid: 5000-10000, and High: 10000+) Obviously, the higher your gamerscore was the better the prizes (because Microsoft probably felt like you had spent more money on on their product or something)

They had a thing going with Old Spice for the only challenge they made. The challenge was raise your gamerscore by 1,500 points between two dates. I think you had about 2 months or so to do it. If you did it, you got various prizes from free gamer picture codes, to t-shirts, and they were also offering a contra code for the xbox live arcade.

It was a really great idea if you ask me, because if people are being bribed by prizes you'd better believe that they're going to go out and buy new games to raise their gamerscore, or maybe they make a challenge of getting all the gamerscore in a newer game and you get some free DLC for that game, it would be a great way to promote new games.

Now, however, achievements are worthless. Don't get me wrong, I love getting them. I'm the kind of person who likes to completely gut a game and do everything possible in it, so they kind of just gives me a guideline to know when i've done that. Provided the achievements in the game aren't just complete the main storyline like some games do. I think if games did achievements correctly, people would like to get them more because they'd be able to get more into the bowels of the game and really find a lot of the underlying storyline.

Exactly, they are like little awards for beating a game honestly I don't care about them much either but sometimes its fun to say to a friend "hey guess how I got this" or "hey I got this before you" it doesn't really matter, but it does add more competition and replayability to games.
