What do you think of achievements?

In reality i think they are a waste of time, makes you play games you would never think about playing and wasting your time on a game you finished with months ago....

Its a bravado thing really.... some people think they are 'elite' because they have lots of achievements.... But really they are wasting their time going for useless points...

Microsoft should do some things to make you actually want to increase your gamerscore. have contests(not that crap one they had a few months ago) and special deals like get to 10,000 and get 200-500 MS points

To an extent they can be fun to get and very addictive, but if it's achievements like play 1,000 of this game match, I can't stand trying to get them because you either have to do it the cheap way to get it or you have to play for a looooooong time, and neither method is especially challenging or rewarding. It's just a dull type of achievement, and another thing is people who buy bad games to get achievements, and people who glitch to get them. That totally erases the point of achievements, you get all the achievements in a good game without glitching, you've earned my respect, but if you glitched to get them, or 90% of your gamerscore is from stufflike Shrek the Third, Harry Potter and sports games, then thatmeans nothing, doesn't prove you're good at any of your games. People who do this are just devaluing achievements as a sign of being obsessed with a number next to your name, rather than wanting to prove you are actually good at that game.

i donno , i didnt say you are trolling but i only felt it , anyways , the achievements makes you play the games more , i mean REAL GAMES, not buying kids games and completing them , if you ask me , the real achievements that you will get that the achievements you get in the game that you love and play , you are playing for fun first then for achievement , anyway if you dont like it then dont get achievements .

They are a great way to indicate how good you are at certain games. When I add a friend and he had Gears on his gamertag, its no big deal. So does everyone else. But if he has Seriously and This Is Annex, I know he is seriously into gears. That is the only reason I care about beating expert in GHII and 5*ing all hard songs (im a long ways away on that one) because I know people will see.

I like them on a points-per-game basis. I could really care less what my overall gamerscore is, but I like getting 100% in a game - just my nature. I do agree that some achievements arn't really well thought out. Also, I tend to think that multiplayer achievements ruin the online experience in most cases.

achvments can be sort of addicting sometimes and IMHO mean something. in a few years all the gamerscore u got will probably have gone to nothing but isnt that what video gaming is about? having the high score or the longest play time or (for this topic) the most gamerscore?

i dont know thats just me... anyway it would be cool if M$ had like a rewards system where 20,000 got u 3 themes of ur choice or 25,000 got u 2 arcade games.

Achievments are awesome as they may encourage you to play games you never would have given a chance or complete side quests and get the most out of a game or your money.. also its something to be proud of like for example FF games.. like I was one of those poeple who did it all.. beating omega in FF8 and beating all the dark aeons in FFX etc.. no one beleived you unless you showed them and if you noobed up like me with my FFX game and had your made save over it.. all that work.. GONE.. atleast in achievments you will always have them and always can say you did this and that...

Another thing I think is we should get rewarded with MS points for fully maxing out achievments in a game.. would be sweet =)

But yeah Achievments FTW!

I think the achievements give games more replay value. Most games' achievements are set up to where in order to get them all, you have to experience everything the game has to offer. Like playing the game in various difficulty modes, beating a level in a short amount of time, etc. With some games, I'd just beat it once and not play it for a while. But with Xbox games, I'll beat it once, see what achievements I didn't get, and try to get those. But I'm not all obsessive about it to try to get a huge gamerscore or anything. It just gives you a reason to play the game a little more.

1. That's the point, to make you play the game more than once, and that's a good thing, you get more for your money.

2. I think you're complaining cause you must suck at getting them.

To simplify this, achievement points were made so people would buy crappy games. (Good Strategy by Microsoft) Even if a game blows (TMNT), people like myself will still go out and give it a whack for the easy ahcievement points, its actually a good marketing strategy. But note, I did not buy TMNT, renting is the way to save money.

it really just depends on the game. at times, achievements are some of the most addicting things ever, enhancing an already great game. if you can make it original enough for the player, i say go for it. but simply progressing through the developer's title shouldn't reward you with points. that in itself is very tedious and almost forces you to play the game. i want to always have that big grin of my face after being awarded a certain amount of points. so i say to devs out there, make 'em fresh. hand them out in the most obsure fashion possible, catching the player off guard. that right there, is satisfaction which achievements should be based on.

i kinda care and i kinda don't.   i like it for the fact that it adds goals to games, but beyond that I don't care.  The only game that I have all the achievement points for is castlevania : sotn...     i also hate online acheivements because i think they ruin the online experience.

They add replay value but they can get annoying when people use them to brag. That's just sad IMO.

achievements are fun but its ridiculous when people play surfs up and open season for achievements. if you want to get achievements that bad just buy a good game for them.

Exactly. That's what I did. I think achievements give you a better thrill out of your games. I like getting achievements because I can offer some advice to others that can't get this achievement etc. It also makes happy when I hear that noise lol when you unlock an achievement. I may be called an achievement whore but mainly they hate because they can't steal my shine. Lol. Achievements area great addition to games.

I like the achievement system because it pushes you to places you would not normally go, and after working hard, the "achievement unlocked" pop-up is satisfying to see.
