Do not choose these as major skills:

-hand to hand (it's uselessly pathetic)

-security (once you get the skeleton key there's no point)

-restoration (it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to level up this skill properly, so don't try)

-merchantile (money isn't an issue in this game so don't worry about that)

-speechcraft (it's basically useless, just use a charm spell or fiddle with the personality mini-game if you really need to)

Other than that I can't think of any other advice.

Oh, and make a custom class, not one of the pre-made ones. You'll make a character that's better suited to your playing style that way and you won't be stuck with any skills that you won't ever use.

Ummm increase ur major skills to level up I guess..., don't overload urself with crap that weights and it can be sold for 0, don't use the warping too much, try to walk if u already passed over the place then use warp, but try to find as many dungeons as u can, avoid the vampire quests till u are kinda high level.

Please what ever you do, don't take anything out of the guild buildings, Even if it doesn't show a red marker over it. Don't take it, its hard trying to get back into the Mages guild after you got suspended.. And the fighters guild also...

My advice for choice of race is Breton. I was a Nord but recently started again with a breton and wish I chose them first. Also, try and do the arena as soon as possible as it pays very well.

Also try and buy the Skingrad house as soon as possible as the guy who sells you it has a habit of dying, and there's no way back from that :)

Buy the strategy guide. It really helps with all the quests, and especially when making a new custom class.

Breton race is good. Magicka fortification and magicka resistance.

And if you're like me, choose Sneak as one of your major skills. You end up leveling up rather fast during Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quests. Acrobatics and Athletics are good major skill choices, too, and I suggest choosing either Blunt, Blade, or Marksman, depending on what kind of weapon you'll be using the most.

Just don't rush through the game to get the achievments. Take time to explore everything.

I have restoration as one of my major skills and its not that terribly hard to level up.

Breton is kinda good, I like High elves though.

I agree with all of them except restoration. I'm currently playing my first real character and restoration is my highest skill, yet I don't recommend it for all classes.  I recommend sneak & alchemy, and don't recommend marksman.

I advise not using enchanted weapons (armor with helpful enchantments is great.) I always run out of wepon charge at the wrong time, so I typically deplete it when I get it so I don't get in over my head. Be an argonian, they are fast, can breath underwater, and are almost impossible to get ill. Be sure you always have a ton of reapair hammers with you at all times. Stay on the good side of the law as much as possible, and just enjoy the game, so find your niche. Mine ins dungeon raiding and going to oblivion for loot in the thousands of coins in payoff. The prime loot every is gold, butcause it is immediately usable and it doesn't weigh anythin. The second best loot it varia stones in ayleid ruins 1000 coins and they only weigh one pound. The third best loot requires high avatar (character) level, but glass curriases are an even better thing to sell then daedric curiasses (you can carry more glass curriasses, and there is no way you are ever going to get full price for it, so be as efficient as possible.) They wiegh a few pounds yet are worth thousands of coins. Seriously, a niche is how you really start doing well and enjoying the game.
