After a few weeks with not alot to play and the upcoming release of fable 2, i down loaded pub games which i have to admit i have become very addicted to, it cost 800 Microsoft points, bargain?

hang on a minute...no its not 100 micro soft points cost 85p (based on English pounds) so really it cost me £6.80 for a card game a dice game and a silly fruit machine game, all of which would be classed as free ware on the pc.

Now i see 2 games on arcade at 1200 ms points braid and castle crashers so let me get this straight £10.20 for a budget game there taking the piss now, you can buy quality games for a tenner such as gears of war, mass effect, saints row....and that's before you look in the pre owned sections.

I'm not tight and i fully understand that if i dont like the cost i dont have to buy any arcade games, but i do like playing some of the old classics i just think the prices are getting stupid, maybe they should devalue the games, like in the shops over time, or price them better.

Well looking forward to reading your views on the subject

You see if a game will give you a certain amount of enjoyment for the price.

If it does you buy it and if it doesn't you skip it

It's the same conversation how people want all RPG's to be at least 60 hours and first and third person shooters should never dip under 20. That's why companies make new games.

You're buying an experience, it's up to each individual user to select how much they're willing to pay for it.

Big quality games you say? Puzzle Quest, REZ HD, Contra, Castlevania: SOTN and Castle Crashers gave more hours of fun than the crappy campaign of Gears of War and Mass Effect.

The way i see it, some of the XBLA developers work their asses off to make games, they need payment, do you want them to sell their games for 400 MS ponits(5 bucks)?

It depends on the subject material and experience for me. These days I'm more willing to spend $15 on a game that gives me a meaniful experience that I loved to play (though only for 15 hours or less) than $15 on a game that has 60 hours of game time that I was minorly interested in. Sure it doesn't appear to make economical sense, but when you only have 30 hours to play games a week (or less) I would rather have all 30 hours be time I really enjoy instead of having too much game you never finish or minorly enjoy along the way.

I just recently got into the whole "Arcade" at the marketplace. I bought Castle Crasher, with a lot of research, and it was worth every single penny I spent on it.

I'd admit, mot arcade titles are a huge rip off, especially the lame ports, but some of them are actually really good. Once you do your research and try out the trials you should be fine. I personally have a problem paying over 800 points for a game, but paying 1200 points for Braid was worth it

I think so. Everything is value for money. How much am I willing to pay for this experience... sure enough many arcade games don't live up, but many do. But that is still dependant on the gamer... As for memories being wrecked... yeah, it is always a risk, but I like old-school stuff so many times it plays exactly how I remember it. Of course you have to put yourself into the same mindset you had when you first enjoyed it.

People have this weird notion that XBLA games are like tech demos or lower end games, that's not the case at all. XBLA is simply a digital distribution service from microsoft, not some like 'small half-baked game' conglomerate. CC and Braid are brand new games and the pricing for new games on XBLA is at 1200, plus they are both well worth it. as for fable 2 pub games, that's an anamoly, I really don't see why anyone would spend money on this but I do see understand the whole pre-order thing. fable 2 pub games is a rip-off TC, I agree.

if you play it a lot and have fun, it's not really a ripoff.. however most on there are way overpriced (i honestly think they should all be free, but whatever. i don't plan to ever support DLC)

I was over estimating based on the audience... yeah I'm around 10-15 myself too... which makes it that much more valuable.

I have a number of Live Arcade games, and I haven't felt cheated by any of them. When I'm dealing with games that are the price of a single drink, it's hard to feel like I'm overspending.

I do think retail games offer much better value for money. The majority of games on XBLA are rubbish and have a very short life. While this summer has seen several high profile and highly rated games, lets not forget that there are 150+ other titles on XBLA which did not receive such glowing reviews, and which far fewer people are playing now they are over a month old.

1200MS is now roughly £10 in the UK, and considering games such as Mass Effect, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Gears of War and Halo can all be bought preowned for this amount, an XBLA would have to be what most XBLA games are not - a decent length and a high quality experience.

Geometry Wars is fun, but lets face it, for most people the average game is going to last under 10 minutes. This game is designed to be replayed over and over, but it is still a very short game. A lot of other XBLA games that feature campaign modes can usually be completed in 2-3 hours, if that.

Sure 400MS is very little, and 800MS is seen as the standard price for an arcade game, but the recent summer releases have largely been 1200MS, and Puzzle Quest, for those that bought it before it became an Aracade Hits title and also got the expansion have paid 1900MS.

Puzzle Quest is a rare example of an excellent XBLA game, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it, and think it is good value for money, for an XBLA game, but when you consider you could pick up Oblivion GOTY, or Mass Effect AND Bioshock for the same price you realise that retail games offer a far greater depth and breadth of experience than anything on XBLA offers.

Also consider that retail games fall in price over time, and can also be sold/traded in when you are done with them. XBLA titles do not drop in price after a period of time (Arcade hits has been a single event for 8 games), and cannot be sold/traded when you are done with them, or realise that you bought something you didn't like.

The prices seem more than fair. You're getting like 10-15 hours of content out of these games, and they're about 1/4th the price.

Yeah but length shouldn't matter in games

If that was the case to make a good game someone would just have to make the game long.

With new games coming out every week, there are going to be some that aren't worth the money. I still think that a lot of them have pretty fair prices. I would pay 400 to 800 MSP for some of the better ones. Anything more than that and they would have to be really good since you can get older retail games for that price. The only one that I am tempted to pay more for is Braid only because so many people are saying it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Maybe the arcade fans just cant afford real games and thats why they have to settle for second rate buget games...maybe im just mythed about giving microsoft more money after my recent red ring issues because there game concole breaks every 6 monthes or that if i sneeze in my room my disc will scratch, or i will be trold that my disc is not for my xbox. If only Sony had the same amount of games as the xbox id jump ship im afraid.craigwhitcher
Now you're just attempting an insult and you're true colors have come out. Maybe it is because people that like the XBLA enjoy different experiences. When you get a retail game you will get a lot of cookie cutter games that are 'safe' investments of the development costs. Maybe it is because those of us that like XBLA can afford both retail games and smaller piecemeal games. Maybe we grew up when arcades still existed and enjoy the feeling of playing quick pick-up and play games. I think most if not all of us have mentioned that some are not worth the money but others are based on the different experience one can find by playing them. We agree with you that far... but to call the XBLA rubbish because of the price is bs. And now you are gone to an absolute low of blaming it on something completely unrelated...

Im afraid my friend that the issues are related it all falls into the section of shoddy over priced workmanship, XBLA games are over priced the large majority are not games made by some guy in his bed room...most are simple ports anyone who wanted to play old concole games on there pc will know how easy it is to get emulators, others are just freeware off the internet.......ok there are a few exceptions where sum guy as a hobby has produced a game....an origanal title....braid is not one of theese its just mario meets prince of persia....and is not worth £10. The guy who did it has not done it out of a love of producing games....he made it to make money plain and simple.

Everyone is entitled to view on the subject matter in a forum it makes an interesting debate.....problem is alot people get very defenseive about there choosen console......bit like the family of a murderere who cant believe there kid butchered sombody.Take a step back and be honest with yourselfs about your machine.

Im just hitting my 30th bday ive been playing consoles since the vextrex and have pretty much owned at least 2 from each generation of console, im also a builder of gamer pc and such a fan of games that ive travelled across europe the last 3 years to GC in leipzig. My views and conclusions are based on experiance

I think all XBLA games should be priced according to content. If it's something like Warlords or Missile Command, something that's really more of a retread then an actual *new* game, it should be 400. Whereas games like Braid and Castle Crashers are completely new IPs that took probably a considerable amount of time to develop, even for an arcade game, could sell for 800-1200. They have the right idea, just not sure where they're heading with it.

Braid and Castle Crashers use elements that are decades old, so wouldn't they get a discounted price by your standards?

My point is games like Warlords and Missile Command are exactly the same as they were on the Atari 2600. They just have shiny HD graphics now. Castle Crashers is a side scrolling beat-em-up so sure, you've seen that style of gameplay before and same with Braid, sure if feels like countless other 2d platformers, but it's a new game. There wasn't a Castle Crashers or Braid on the Atari 2600, NES or GENESIS, you know?

Yes, those games that have done before are built from the ground up using HD graphics. Old elements modernized.

Just like Braid and Castle Crashers.

If I get Dig Dug and play it for 50 hours over a few years compared to getting Braid and playing it 20 what is the better deal?

It all comes down to entertainment. You can't put any tangible quality ratings on the games because they don't break down evenly.

i bought geometry wars 2 and it was well worth the money, i downloaded lots of trials of different games and they are just not my thing. yeah the gears campaign may suck but the online is the best, lots of people still play it, me and my mates splitscreen all the time.

i have bought 5 or 6 arcade games and they are very entertaining. everything from hot shots mini-golf to assault heroes. they are well made and alot of fun. i also have mutant storm and marble blast. the free ones are pretty good as well. hexic and aegis wing and undertow. i enjoy these games and think they are worth the price. i might even get some more.
