The Walking Dead has the greatest character development I've experienced all year. You'll really get attached to the characters, especially considering they could cease to live at any moment because of things you do(or dont do).
The story is emotionally engaging, and the QTEish gameplay works perfectly, very suprisingly. Highly recommended.
None of the games in this thread are action adventure games... Sleeping Dogs, Darksiders 2, and Assassins Creed 3 are some recently good games that fit the genre..
EDIT: Misread thread title as Action Adventure... Adventure game is a board genre...
