At the moment probably Oblivion, Forza 2 or PGR4 depending on your taste since each of those are lengthy. But I think Mass Effect is going to be the best in a little while.

Definitely the best choice out there for the single, solitary experience. And the Orange Box has the best value cause it comes with Portal (puzzle game that is just ridiculously addicting) and Team Fortress 2 if you want the multiplayer.
depends on your taste, but i'd say: BioShock The Orange Box (HL2 + episodes + PORTAL) Forza 2 - my personal favorite to keep going back to in between other games.
Mass Effect will be the best single-player game ever made. Then The Orange Box for the 3 Half-Life games are a close second. Also Dead Rising is a close third.
i agree, how do you know mass effect will live up to the hype so much? anyway, from personal experience, single player games (in no order): rainbow six vegas splinter cell double agent the orange box skate the darkness sports games (nba 2k8, the bigs, madden 08, ect..)
oblivion(it takes like 50 hours to complete the main story but ive spent some good 170 hoursplaying it), saints row(the best sandbox game ever created and it takes like 20 fun hours to complete it), F.E.A.R(simply the best FPS made, it only takes like 10 hours to complete but after finishing it, youll want to get back for more).
Mass Effect, Oblivion, Bioshock, and The Darkness have been/will be my favorite single player experiences. Halo's fun, but it's not going to last you nearly as long. It's epic, though. Hah.
