Blocking in skyrim, what gives?

Is blocking nothing like oblivion? I always take damage even when i have my shield up before a hit. am i doing i wrong? or is that just how it is now?

From what i've seen yes it is set up so you still take damage while blocking but so does enemies that block. I guess it's Bethesda's way of keeping it fair so AI's can't just stand there blocking and never taking damage. The only thing I have seen is mage's have a spell that makes a shield that doesn't take damage.

Use perks on blocking to decrease damage when blocking. Check it out in the skills menu.

You took damage when you blocked in Oblivion until you got to level 25 I believe. It might be 50 but pretty sure it was 25.

Those spells (wards) are pretty useful but can be broken by a strong enough attack,

I'm loving Skyrim but getting beat down pretty regularly. I think it's because I'm playing as a mage for the first time and still developing strategies though. I was thinking about changing my robes for some armour snd wielding a spell in one hand and weapon in the other.
