I am not interested in either HD or Blu-Ray until there is a standard.  Buying either to have only certain movies available is retarded.

But it's good to see that MS isn't stubbornly supporting only HD-DVD, causing us to suffer in case Blu-Ray takes off.

HD-DVD isn't Microsoft's problem. And Sony doesn't decide who gets Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray Association does. Sony uses Windows XP for their computers. Both companies use eachother. And not everyone in Sony or MS hates eachother. Don't take Ken Kuturagi and Kaz Harai's BS as all of Sony when it comes to their gaming division.

I think Microsoft should just completely surprise the market and put a Blu-Ray drive in the Elite 360, and undercut the PS3 by about $200. That would be a smart business maneuver.

It's going to happen, I'm reading the new Game Informer magazine and the new Elite Xbox-360 will not have a built in HD-DVD player (Microsoft said "HD-DVD format isn't proven"), that to me suggests MS is looking into Blu-Ray.

The Blu-ray Disc format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers, with more than 180 companies from all over the world.

It might have been a joke about the Elite, but M$ has not really embrassed the HD thing yet.  It makes perfect sense for M$ to embrace a format.  MORE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I'm sure Sony would be thrilled if MS built a blu-ray addon for the 360.  They get a small cut of every blu-ray disc produced and every drive sold I've heard.

I dont think M$ would mind that much...figuring if they take away some future PS3 buyers... Blu-Ray is the only reason my friends bought the system.  They justified it as a cheap player as they play their 3 games for it.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Peter Moore at the 2006 CES told Japanese site ITmedia that a Blu-ray Xbox 360 peripheral could appear for the system if the need arises. Moore admitted that Microsoft isn't sure of the next-generation format war's outcome, with the worst-case scenario being a repeat of the Beta vs. VHS war of the '80s.

However, he suggested that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since its uses an external drive.

According to Gamasutra.com, Xbox UK head Neil Thompson told the BBC that Microsoft would consider supporting the Blu-ray format if it becomes significantly more popular than HD-DVD, which the company currently supports through a $199 Xbox 360 peripheral.

"Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution," he said. "The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice."

for those who say both next gen systems should surpport the winning format (hd or blue ray) it wont happen for the ps3. Ms has the xbox 360 with external hd dvd players so if hd fails then they can come out with blue ray. Ps3's blue ray dvd is built internaly not sold seperate so unless they make all new ps3 sony would most likely fail worst than they already have.

Which will be passed on to you - the consumer. Microsoft just wants to make money. If Blu-Ray wins and they offer a 360 BD add on, rest assured that it will be priced to earn profit. For both Sony and Microsoft.

Microsoft would have to join the Blu-Ray Group and pay a membership fee. Microsoft also had to do the same thing to join the HD-DVD group.

I did. And the PS3 is the most recommended Blu-Ray player on the BD-player AVSForum. It's rated the best sub-$1000 player on the market. It's *really* *really* good, and lots of videophiles are buying into the PS3 simply because it's the cheapest good player out there.

The Matrix was at one time (probably still) the best selling DVD of all time.

Soon two Matrix box sets will be released by WB on the HD-DVD format only.  The reason behind this is simply Blu-Ray's inability to utilize WB's interactive features.

Will this win the format war for HD-DVD?  Certainly not...but this war is FAR from over.  Sony just wants people to think it is.

I saw that too.  It ranked right up there w/ the stand alones.  The HD DVD player for the 360 didnt stack up well against the stand alones
