I'm on my second xbox, and when the first one broke it was entirely my fault... Oblivion was too adicting and by that time I didn't know the console overheated or of the exitence of the 3 red lights. After 6 hour marathons the console was blazing hot and freezed from time to time, 3 weeks later died. Now for my second console that I've had since november 06 I've taken all the meassures I could think of and everything is fine :)
But my friend for instance got the console two weeks ago and after 2 days he got the red lights... Sometimes it is a matter of taking care of the console, but other times is just a matter of a poorly built machine.
i have had a sega genesis, nintendo, super nintendo,ps1,ps2,xbox and now a xbox 360 and other electronics including 2 laptops.... and i have never... ever had a problem with any... i never even bought a warranty for any.... until the 360... i am on my 3rd system now... its not coincidence.... its just bad manufacturing... not to mention the last one the messed up was out of the box... so yea... bluezclue
I was just like you. Never had a system die on me. Owner of a 2600, NES, Genesis w/ Sega CD, Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and now a 360. I bought my 360 on 12/22/2005 and it still works perfectly. PERFECTLY. I even have the HD-DVD player on top of it. But its well ventilated (reasonably enough, anyway) and I hardly ever move the console. In fact, I've only done it several times to plug stuff in and that was only sliding it around. So, like the OP said, can I really be THAT lucky? Or are people doing things to grossly contribute to these multiple breaks? Interesting questions indeed.
In other news, I hope mine breaks so I can get the HDMI one. That is all.

good point
even if you are playing it for 6 hours at a time the system still should be able to handle that. microsoft should issue a recall. my second system is at the microsoft service center right now, and if i have to have it serviced again im just gonna get a ps3.I'm on my second xbox, and when the first one broke it was entirely my fault... It should be able to handle 6 hour sessions but in this heat in the summer it seems to be a problem for people, oblivion is the game that fried my first console, its too addictive lol
I got my 360 at launch so it's going on 2 years old. I pack it up 4 times a week since I'm lucky enough to be able to play it at work. I also take it over my friends house every Monday and we have Rainbow Six and Forza Live Lan parties with the system being on anywhere from 12 to 36 straight hours every week. It's worked like a champ and I've never had a problem.
Then there is my brothers and friends system(s). 3 people have gone through 9 systems in under a year. Their systems are in one place, well vented and are used for a fraction of the time that mine is.
By this alone I can see it's the systems. Some last and some don't. Microsoft knows it, that's why they extended the warranty. They would not have done that if the system was fine and people were just messing them up.
I take well care of my xbox 360 i look after better then my woman and it still got the red ring of death you;ll get it to its not how you look after it . its just made wrong and thats it thats why the ps3 will win in the end. it will last longer .they make a xbox 3 next
I have had my Xbox 360 for about 7 months now and have never had the ring of death. Same thing with 3 of my friends, never. We all take good care of our 360s always making sure we turn them off and not have any damage to them. I just got done reading a forum about people throwing controllers and somtimes even having there xboxs fall to the floor. And they wonder why they have gone through 4 systems? Im not saying that every one who has a broken 360 is responsible i mean it happens. But really going through 3-4 systems i think its a little more then coincedence.French023
its an issue with the design of the 360, while some people do abuse the system...some systems just dont breath right and die. they send it off to MS, but untill recently they didnt do much to save them. we now have new chipsets comeing out and new heat syncs. this isnt all users abusing their systems. i treated mine like a god and one day he decided to slightly scratch one of my disks...after that i never trusted him so i got it traded out.

i'm on my 3rd console right now. my system never moves from where it is and i always take care of it and make sure it's off when i'm not playing it. the only thing i ever do is take my hdd off when i go to a friends or something. just bad luck i guess.

I take good care of my consoles, always have. And i always read about these horror stories with the 360 and said to myself this wouldn't happen to me. Just after a year it started with the Ring of Death and i bought another one on May. If this one dies on me too, as much as i hate to say it (because of the awesome game library it has) then it will be game over for me and Microsoft.

so u created this topic to brag about ur 360 not breaking? alot of ppl take care of their consoles and sometimes they just fail. the 360 was made with a bad cooling design and it overheats and gets the rod (33% failure rate)...call urself lucky

Man you REALLY arent very bright. No...people on their 3rd and 4th xbox most of the time ARENT mistreating them. Maybe you havent heard, but it has been estimated that the failure rate of the 360s might be as high as 30%. THIRTY PERCENT. Are you even capable of understanding the implications of that number?? Apparently you arent. I sent my xbox in yesterday for the FOURTH time. I have had it for a year and a half...I have ALWAYS treated it like the Holy Spirit resides inside it. I dont even leave discs inside it overnight. I can guarantte you that MANY people are just like me.
Heres a simple explanation for a simple mind. When you send your xbox in, and they cant fix it fast enough, the send you a REFURBISHED one. YOu know what that means? That means they send you SOMEONE ELSES xbox that had broken before yours. In case you didnt know, ANY refurbished item has reduced reliability. THAT is why im on my 4th one. I have even called the BBB on them trying to get a brand new one and they wont budge.
Heres another simple concept for you that i hope you can understand. You have only had yours for 7 months. I had mine for 6 months before it broke the first time. With a 30% failure rate and the device has not EVEN been out 2 years yet, that tells you something. That tells you there is something SEROIUSLY wrong with the hardware...and you can go so far as to say that the hardware, in general, is prone to failure.
So...if yours hasnt broken yet, count your blessings. ESPECIALLY if you have only had it for half a year. You have NO RIGHT to be taunting that yours hasnt broken. With these kinds of failure rates, ALL xbox 360s should be considered defective, and you SHOULD expect it to break at any time. I know its hard to hear, it took me a LONG time to come to grips wiht it because i love the console. But im realistic now. If your console hasnt broken yet, you are lucky. Obviously they wont ALL break at the same time. Some will last longer than others.
But my friend, if you think that this console will last you untill the next gen (like the original xbox did...i NEVER had probolems with it and it still works)....you are so naive that i feel SORRY for you.
Keep your stupid opinions to yourself.

settle down everyone i was just putting somthing out there. i said this for a reason" Im not saying that every one who has a broken 360 is responsible i mean it happens." because i didnt want everyone being like this guy
Had mine since LAUNCH DAY with no problems whatsoever. I keep it ventilated (console and power brick), keep dust and static away from it (keep it dusted and don't put it near carpeting or other static dischargers), and take care of it (it has never been dropped, don't let kids use it, etc.) I also read the instruction manual when I hooked it up...Diva-of-Destiny
Im keeping mine vetilated, both console and powerbrick. never leave a disc in there. I turn the console off when not in use.
Ive read the instructions, keeping it dusted etc etc.
all that and it still died on me 3 times. some of them just do. I dont expect you to understand cause yours never died on you but you will when it does.
I got my 360 last Christmas, I rarely played it, and it still only lasted till April:|
Definately wasn't my fault, I took good care of it. Some just die out.
I bought an xbox at launch, it lasted roughly a year. RROD. My friend bought his about two to three weeks after mine, his lasted about four to five weeks after mine was replaced.RROD
My second one is now broken, nearly a year to the day that the last one broke. RROD. Im awaiting for my replacement. Suffice to say that my friend is having many a sleepless nights worrying about his beloved box, because we are almost 100 percent CERTIAN that his machine is no doubt on its last legs.
But at the end of the day we both wholehartedly agree that we dont care how many times it breaks because MS will fix it for free. We both love our xbox's and the experiences that we have together online far outweigh the inconvenience of having to get our consoles repaired on a yerly basis.
On a side note, I have 12 months left on my warranty so by my calculations I should just about squeeze another of microsofts mighty machines. After that, well I guess im on my own.......

The key to a long living xbox is not letting it over heat, people always blame Xbox but when it comes down to it if people could play less or take breaks in between marathons their xboxes would last longer. Say u do an 8 hour Oblivion marathon... if you were to just take a 10 minute break every 2 or 3 hours ur xbox would not overheat.. and if it did than urs is prolly defective or ur xbox is in a bad location. Location is key... keeping ur xbox in a entertainment system is a NO.. putting ur xbox and POWER SUPPLY in an open area, away from carpet or blankets and u should be fine.

Same as you mate, and I hate when people blame me for my 360 breaking, I treated it like gold, even one of the guys at Gamespot is on his third.
