Alright, so here's the deal, I've never played a Bethesda game before. However, I own both Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls IV. My question is this: would it be better for me to play ESIV first? I realize they are completely separate series, but one came out years after the other. Would I appreciate ESIV better if I played it before Fallout 3, as the developer probably refined techiniques and mechanics from ESIV and used them in Fallout 3 plus added a bunch of other stuff? Or are the two so drastically different that the influence from the former onto the latter isn't even noticeable (which I doubt to be the case)?

And please no replies of "You're overthinking this, bro! Just play the games cuz they're rad!" Thank you.

the two games are so different, in terms of combat, that the best way to choose which to play first it to ask yourself "what do i prefer shooting things or slashing things.

if graphics make a difference, then i would say play oblivion first as the graphics are not as good as fallout.

also fallout isnt as buggy as oblivion.

so probably oblivion then fallout.

if you play fallout first maybe oblivion will feel a little older or dated gameplay

Personally I dont think it will matter but I suggest Obilvion. I liked Obilivon better just due to the more interesting areas to explore. I dont think the slightly worse graphics in Oblivion will turn you off if you play Fallout first.

i havnt played fallout 3, (have played oblivion) but they seem like fairly different games to me. Oblivion is really about "run around in a massive world, doing whatever the hell you want", while fallout seems to be based a lot more in consequences. because of this i would personally start both and switch between, but i know other people tend to stick to 1 game at a time, while i tend to switch between several

Actually, Mellow, the way you described Oblivion is pretty much the same way you'd describe Fallout 3. Just like Oblivion, it has a main quest and side quests, but half the fun is just wandering aimlessly and exploring. "Oblivion with guns" is a pretty accurate description of Fallout 3.

play oblivion man, its better than fallout and its just an epic game that makes u want to explore every single area and city and dungeon and everything!

fallout is cool too but oblivion just is better in everything imo and much longer

I don't see any reason why your asking questions here, split your playing time up & work in both games.

I would have to agree... Both will eat up hundreds of hours (if you're as thorough as I am). If you start one, you'd probably forget about the other. Play both. Then I guess whichever one takes more of your time up is your answer.

Why are you denying the truth?

Truly: It doesn't matter, one won't spoil the other and gameplay is very different in the two.

You have 2 of the best RPGs of all time available to you! Flip a coin and pick one, as every second you are putting this off is another second you are denying yourself an amazing game. lol. Seriously though, it really depends on whether you would want guns and a postapocolyptic envrionment (my favorite), or a medieval fantasy world with magic and swords. Like everyone said, neither will spoil the other.
