just bought a 360 and tried to connect to the internet. did it directly through the modem but somehow when it was testing my connection, the first test (the wired one, i forgot what the test was called) passed, but the second one, the IP address did not. i got an error of X: 4000-1001, the rest, if i recalled correctly were all zeros.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

plus, the IP address settings were on automatic. (actually everything else was on automatic)

I've had this problem before, I typically just had to disconnect and reconnect a few times and then it worked. My cousin had a problem where the modem set up through the computer restricted his xbox from connecting. Your best bet is to just keep trying to have the xbox find the connection.

Have you tried turning the modem off and back on again when its connected to the 360. It maybe to do with theMAC address of the network card in the 360. When I used to connect directly I had to clone the MAC address from my PC to the Xbox. This information can be added to the network settings screen on the dashboard.

Your MAC address of your network card should be recorded by your ISP, when you connect the console you will have a different MAC address.

If you need to find out what your MAC address is click START > Run and type cmd, press enter. In the command prompt type ipconfig/all

Your MAC address is the the physical address reported here e.g 00-13-8F-4F-45-4D
