Does anyone here use their laptop as a wireless adapter to get on XBL? I use my laptop as one and I'm having problems changing the NAT type.Mine is strict. If so can someone tell me how to change my NAT type from strict to at least moderate or open? Am I able to do so while using my laptop as a wireless adapter? Help is appreciated.

What OS? For Win 7 to keep it open you have to make sure that "Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection" is checked.

I'm pretty sure you can. What you have to do is change your router settings to allow it to be open. Basically it's called port forwarding. You need to have the router forward certain ports that need to be open.

First off, you should connect your Xbox 360 directly to your router as a test. If it is still strict, than you should worry about your router before your laptop.

I believe the checkbox is the same in Vista. Does your laptop sit behind a router? If so, you will be running a double NAT which can be problematic. See if your router supports uPNP and turn it on if it does.

I did connect it to my router one time before and it still said that it was strict.

It supports it. I've turned it on but I still seemed to have had problems. I'll try it again.

My Nat type is moderate but I dont have problems playing LIVE except for the occasional LAG everyone gets. should I still make it open? what would having NAT improve?

BLAS1AN

It improves the matchmaking time as well as Xbox Live communications. It won't affect lag in-game, but it's advised to switch it to open because of the lower wait time in lobbies.

The trick is if you're using a router you are doing a double NAT, which probably breaks uPNP. uPNP typically only works when the device supporting uPNP is sitting directly on the internet as your router is. The problem is since your laptop is behind the router, it's not directly on the internet. uPNP dynamically opens ports on the supporting device, so forwarding the XBL ports to your laptop would not have the desired effect (it would allow Games for Windows played on your laptop to support Open NAT, but not your Xbox behind your laptop).

I -have- gotten this to work in the past, but the method is not ideal. If you DMZ your laptop on the router, that forwards all ports not explicitly defined to go elsewhere to your laptop. That would allow uPNP to work, but it basically is the same as putting your laptop directly on the internet. If you go that route you'll want to firewall your laptop, which may adversely effect your ability to play online (or it may not).

Bottom line is you may just want to spring for the wireless adapter for the 360 (I assume that's why you are going to this trouble).

I failed to mention that I'm not using a lap top...I'm sorry. I connect my xbox directly to a router. However, I get a message on Halo 3 that says my NAT type is not open. I was wondering if i still need to open it. thanks for the info though in case I do use a lap top in the future, lol

Yeah that's the biggest reason. I don't really want to drop $100 for some wireless adapter. I'll try it. BTW, can any wireless adapter work with the 360? Or do I have to get the official one? Thanks for the help everyone.

Sorry, you kinda hijacked someone else's thread. My intention was to reply to the topic creator and I got confused about who that was.

You have to get the official "adapter" if you want to add a wireless NIC to the 360, but you can also accomplish the same thing by using a wireless bridge instead. These are relatively inexpensive devices compared to the offical adapter.
