I'm guilty. After being out all of this time I finally picked up COD4 and started to play last night.

But, of course, I got my you-know-what handed to me. Typically I am fair to decent when it comes to online play but it was horrible. Everyone in the room was in some level of prestige. Combined with their perks, knowledge, and armarment I was seriosuly outclassed. To the point of not having fun.

I know, in the end it is not the weapons etc. but how good the player is. That is true, to an extent.

I was just looking for some tips to help me get started and begin leveling up. Seems to be a really fun game and I don't want togive it up but this is just brutal.

Sorry to hear your first round was so painful. My only suggestion is to keep playing. You'll eventually get the hang of it as you learn the maps. Just don't wander off on your own. Stay near your teammates so they can support you and vice versa. I haven't played in a while but I found the M16 easy to use for beginners. The three-round burst is usually enough to knock down any target. But it can be a bit frustrating at close range.

well to start make sure to pick the right perks for the right class...aka if you are a stealth class then you want a silencer on your gun..the uav jammer perk and the dead silence perk...altrhough you dont get dead silence till level 44:?....if you are a sniper make sure to pick an isolated position where the other snipers prolly wouldnt think to look and make sure that if there is a doorway or staircase leading to your spot plant a claymore or 2 just around the corner...for you since you said you are not having fun i would pick the weapon according to the map also such as for overgrown you might want a sniper but then again ypu might want a shotgun to storm the house that the enemy sniper is camping and another example is on the map vacant with the long hallways if i were you i would pick the mp5 it is an excellent medium range gun and at close range you can *spray and pray* or hip fire and alot of the time it will kill them unless of courese they knife you or shoot you first..

also if you have friends playin call of duty 4 then try to join up with them,...it makes it alot easier to use teamwork and communication with people that you know than random strangers

set up a few private matches with your friends and just get used to the game modes and levels. try out new weapons and perk combinations. to rank up faster play search and destroy, more points per kill and even more for completing objectives.

Use the M16, and get enough kills until you get the Red Dot sight. Then by level 6 or something you'll get to create a custom class and you can use the stopping power and deep penetration perks, along with your red dot m16, and you'll automatically have statistically the best gun in the game.

Gameplay wise, it's simple... Follow your teammates, watch what they do.

Would you run as fast as possible into no-mans land in a real war? Obviously not; so dont do it in a video game either.

MOST IMPORTANT: Get to know the maps. You can start a private match with just yourself if you need to and select any of the maps. That way you can look all around the maps and get to know them before getting continuously killed by people who know the maps.

2) Keep your sights at chest or head level. If you see someone in front of you and your sights are at their feet when you first see them, you will die. Before you can raise your sights they will have already shot you in the chest or head.

3) Put in the hours. You will not beat someone who has put in 200+ hours when you're just starting. Live with it. It will get better. And it's all worth it after you get good.

Good luck.

One more thing: People keep bringing up teammates. If you do play team (try free-for-all also) do NOT let your so called teammates use you as a meat shield. Trust me they will try to. People who don't know you don't care about you or the team. They care about getting the most kills and talking crap. They will do things like watch you get on a big gun and stand back to kill the guy who comes to kill you AFTER he kills you.

Also, join a clan or play mercenary team deathmatch cause clans are the only things with actual teammates so they always win.

Wow TC you have received mature responses so far! Good topic btw.

I felt your pain too and have a friend going through it as well right now.

Play Headquarters and get some good points to level up quickly. The HQ points are always moving so you get some good map knowledge as well.

Find a weapon you like and master it. Obviously not all weapons play as well on each map but focusing on one weapon's strength will get you to killing more which is good inspiration to keep playing.

Good Luck! CoD4 got me back into online gaming big time. Addictive.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Very detailed. I'm sure I'll be back to reference each one. Good contributions.

Been playing FPS for years and years but this was an eye opener. Worse than CS:S when it first came out on PC.

Guess I just need to be smart, patient, and level up a bit.

i'm kind of in the same place (lvl 13) i find that the assault (m16, ak47) r the best guns for starters.

don't run and fire u get less accuracy i stay in place and fire at people.

if u know sombody is around the corner then throw a flash bang and rush in with a knife.

Did you play singleplayer at all? It's different, but it helps you get the ropes a bit.

I'm coming out of lurkerdom just to post on this, though I will fade back into lurkerdom once I have finished.

My advice would be to find the "class" that you are best suited for. Personally, I'm a horrible sniper. I prefer a silenced G3 (single shot assault rifle unlocked at 21) until I get the G36-C (which I also silence asap) for outdoor/long range battles. In the case of Vacant or another medium-close to close range combat map, I generally go with a silenced MP5 or P90.

It ultimately comes down to discovering your own strengths and weaknesses. Then from there you build upon that with perks and weapon attachments. Not so hot with the gun's default iron sights? Try out the Red Dot sight when you get it, or even the ACOG.

Every weapon is pretty much equal to each other in the hands of someone who is experienced enough with it.

Another weapon/perk combination I found pretty useful was M16 and Double Tap (increases rate of fire.) Since the M16 is burst fire, with Double Tap you'll fire off a three round burst in about the time of a single shot from any single-shot rifle. The M16 also helps to counter the needless wasting of ammo that can happen from using Double Tap (since the burst-fire helps you control your ammo consumption.)

And in compliance with everyone else, learn the maps, try to get a feel for your opponents strategies as well as learn the general strategies that most people apply, and don't be afraid to hang back and support your team rather than rushing out to become the omgirtehchampeen! Unless, of course, you're playing free-for-all. Then I have no advice for you really, I prefer team games.

Finally, smart playing will win over sheer brute playing every time. The player who baits another player into a trap or sets up an ambush will always have the edge over the player who runs in guns blazing.

I am not going to read all the posts, so I don't know if this has been mentioned or not. Play Headquarters. It it the fastest way to rank up. If you are on a good team & they win, you can actually walk away with over 1000 XP. Also, since the game isn't as focused on the killing aspect, gives you better chance of getting points even you aren't a seasoned vet yet.

Since you are new to the game I would suggest sticking to the "rookie friendly" guns.....m16 and m4 carbine, also try out the mp5 for close quarter combat maps like district, wetworks, shipment, etc....I would suggest you don't play any FFA matches until you get better because often the game will match you up against prestige players who are looking to complete the FFA challenge. Try playing Mercenary Team Death match; here you will find a lot of lower ranked players who don't know each other and are learning their way just as you are. Good Luck!!!.....oh yeah, until you get really good with the weapons stopping power:D is almost a must to counter the countless juggernaut users:evil:

When I first started out playing online, I sucked sooooo bad.

but just keep playing and once you get the M4 and the Last stand perk. It should be alot more easier to get kills.

Get very good at hip firing at close range, Get very good with the M16, MP5 and P90 and whatever you do don't rush in with a group of people in team death match, instead just run around and flank the opposing team when they are concentrating on your team via the "RUN IN AND JUST FIRE GROUP".

Instead just take your time and "THINK" you will see most of the time people do the same exact thing in the game like when you kill a camper in room X almost 80% of the time he is going right back to that same room/area to get you or just camp there again, I don't know why they do this but anyway all you have to do is just find a spot outside of the place he just got killed and wait for him because most of the time you can get the jump on him because he is prolly thinking youare still in the room he got killed in and is not expecting you to have moved. I have got several kills on the same person in the same building but the whole time he was coming back I was just in a different area in building and I guess he was not expecting that or something hell I don't know but sooner than later you need to find another room or just get out of that area because he might bring the whole team next time.

It works most of the time for me but be careful because a good player that is "THINKING" will Flash/Stun bang and cook grenade the place to death if you're not careful that's why you always always have to move when you make a kill and have the opportunity to do so. Most of the time when someone kills me they just sit in the same place, im thinking like man you should have at least moved to the corner or something I mean you know try and fake me out or something.

Trust me for some reason when you kill a person in COD4 they are coming back to that same place to find you and "KILL "you and if they Know the map very well like others have said for you to do they can get to you pretty quickly and kill you when you are trying to find another area to wait in or just leaving that area. So its up to you to either move outside of the area or just find another area inside whatever building you are in and wait for that one guy to come back because if you do not move fast enough they can be there in about 10 sec or less on the smaller maps sometimes faster than that.

I have over 36000+ kills and 16000 deaths i can get 25+ kills consistently sometimes 40+ if i play with a bunch of noobs ..........not to offend you or anything. I went 28 and 0 in free for all and I have pretty decent ratio's……. and most of that is from common sense and quick reflexes.

I'm quiet/laidback online because I just like to "THINK" and "PLAY" and I can't "THINK" and talk at the same time I think that's why most of the time I get more kills then the people who talk a lot online not saying that there are not people who talk a lot and can put the smack down on you it's just most of the time when people talk its like they can't concentrate on the game and they start cursing the gun whey they don't get a headshot or it's the levels fault that their not doing good and the whole time I'm thinking you dumb*** its prolly because you're talking to much STFU and PLAY lol.

No I'm just kidding I know xbox live is a "Social" type thing and people are going to talk because that's just what they are going to do that's prolly just their way of having fun, my way of having fun is trying to outsmart that one person who keeps camping in that building or that one guy who is going around with a silenced MP5 and uav jammer and so forth. That's why i don't talk to much on live but typing that's another story.

BTW I might sound like I'm bragging which most people will think I am anyway even if I was to say that I'm not, it's just that I'm confident in my tactics and my game play style, this game is really no more than just common sense, quick reflexes and "THINKING so if you need help let me know my gamertag is in my sig peace.

NOTE: sorry for the grammar issues I was in a rush.

Alright. Read through everything, heeded the advice. and gave it another go last night.

About 20 minutes into it something 'clicked' and I was back (oh, did I mention that despite preferring FPS I had taken about a 5 month break?) in rare form. What made a lot of difference was getting the stopping power and deep impact perk. Then I could see how the M16 is refferred to as a 'noob cannon'. Also started to get a feel for the maps and learning their nuances (love Backlot and Countdown, detest Bloc).

Once the pieces started falling into place I found myself #2-#3 at the end of the rounds against much more experiences players so it is starting to come back thanks to practice and some good advice. Even called in a few airstrikes and numerous recon drones.

Overall, COD4 is a different FPS than some of it's predecessors. Not quite as tactical as CS but at the same time it's more tactical than other COD or MOH type run and guns. I can see how it's addicting. Now I am seeing '+10' in my sleep.

Nice. Its that +10, leveling, perk class designing, and map variety that makes this so damn addicting. BTW- Bloc is garbage I agree 100%. It is just never as exciting as some of the other maps.

If your having trouble just do this: Play private matches and learn the different maps, knowing each map like the back of your hand is key. Also focus on unlocking the Red Dot Scope on the M16 and the M4. Both are very solid weapons and probubly some of the best weapons in the game.

They only advice I can give is to be accurate. Firing randamly into stuff only gives away your position and wastes ammo. The only time you shoudl fire w/o seeing someone is punch thorugh a wall where you know someone is. If you are missing your shots, try keeping your sight at nipple level, so if you bring up your sights, you are already in the kill zone.

When I First Started Playing, I WAS SO BAD. Now IM Level 3 Prestiege 38, So It Helps To Pick The Weapons And Perks You Want, if You Like Martydom Or Juggernaut And you Think Its Helping You Out Then Thats Your Chocie To Use Them, So Dont Take It Offensive If Someone Calls You Nooby For Using Certain Guns Or Perks, Your Still Only New To The Game.
