I think that if you don't have a lot of games, or can't afford a lot of games, then multiplayer becomes more important. CrazyWerewolf
Agreed. Multiplayer can still be great, but it isn't the end all to games unless that is one of the few that you have or enjoy.

An epic single player campaign will always be better than multiplayer.ethanpaige

Most def, multiplayer is just to breath life back into the game after the single player mode is completed.

Well when I lived at home and had Gold, I always enjoyed playing games online but as of late I have been focusing on the single player mode.

No because you're only a fanatic. You have to be higher than that to recieve medals. Even outside our board.

For myself there is a great balance for SP and MP games. I mean personally I think games like Army of Two is a game which needs to have either a friend playing on the same machine or via Xbox live, however games like Call of Duty 4 might have a great online mode however I thought that story of MW was pretty solid.

I think developers would need to look at the idea that you can have a great SP mode and work on getting a very very good MP mode for imo a rounded game.

Halo CE was a prime example of a well rounded game. The SP was phenominal(with the exception of the library) and the MP was the best out of the 3.

yes, your theory is partially correct. Look at Unreal Tournament 3, the "campaign" is basically just a bunch of multiplayer game modes against bots. And I really hope this doesn't become a trend, because I like to do the single player stuff.

i rarely buy a game solely for single player any more as i undoubtedly know that it will be over with and i wont want to play the same exact story over again. however, multiplayer games are different with each game you play, strategies change, players change, everything changes, its continually a new experience so to me multiplayer has a much longer life span than single player does. thats not to say that i wont buy a game thats single player only, i bought oblivion which is my favorite game of all time and viva pinata which is up there as well, but multiplayer is more of a draw for me because it gives me more in return as far as bang for my buck. if game creators werent making games shorter day by day and they were all in between bioshock and oblivion length then i would have no problem with single player, but too many games now straddle under 12 hours of single player so i dont even consider them worth a purchase.

This an interesting topic. It is true that single-player campaign modes have gotten shorter and I also think that more people are playing multiplayer modes. However, I think it would alienate a portion of the gaming industry if the designers made the single-player modes any shorter.

Why is this still being debated when i just provided a list of like 10 or more single player only games and all of which are AA or AAA titles? Dosent make sense and like half of all those singleplayer games are yet to be released. The 360 offers such a variety of quality online multiplayer, singleplayer and RPG games im really quite surprised by its library.

That's not entirely true. Unreal started out as a single-player, which at the time it came out, was the most incredible experience in shooters. The next entry in the series was a mission pack for the first Unreal. Then, we had Unreal Tournament. With Unreal 2 and Unreal Tournament 2003, Epic tried to create two separate games, one for single-player, and one for multiplayer. A host of people playing Unreal 2 whined that it didn't have multiplayer. I always thought this was stupid, since if you want multiplayer, that's what Unreal Tournament's for. Anyway, Unreal 2 didn't sell well, and the franchise has since gone into multiplayer-only territory. Instead of (single-player) Unreal 3, we got Gears of War, which everyone loved.

no death if theres an amazing single player story it kind of reflects to the multiplayer like in gta4 theres shooting and car chases in the real game so they put it in the multiplayer not just regular death match they changed things up to match the single player in fable 2 there making a online system where you can invite people into your game and help you out or stuff like that i think that if the game has a good single player it will have a great multiplayer you cant just say halo 3 has a bad single player and then play the multiplayer the single player sets everything for multiplayer like weapons vehicles even maps (if any of you play cod4)

Yeah there are way more single player games then GTA 4, for example, Halo 3, Gears of war, Mass effect, GRAW, COD 4 (though it was short it was amazing), The orange box, RSV 2, and way more then GTA 4 which is a great game by the way. Anyway i just want to give you example of those good games for multiplayer and Campaign (especially CO-OP games like Halo 3). That's all that i know.

In my opinion multiplayer is the future of gaming. With the Internet the way it is now multiplayer games can almost give the same rich and fulfilling experience that an in depth single player game can. Take World of Warcraft for example. It has many story lines that are full-filling not to mention all the back story and lore of the World Of Warcraft series. It also has in depth character development. The only difference is, it does require communication with other players and every story may not turn out the same, which is why multiplayer is exciting. When you ad the human element to a game unpredictable things happen which, i think, make the game more exciting. Now i think multiplayer is great, however you can never get rid of a great single player experience. Some game developers have a story to tell and they can only tell it through a single player game. For example any metal gear solid game. The most recent metal gear solid game had one of the best single player experiences i have ever played, and i honestly did not care about the multiplayer because i was so engrossed in the single player aspect. As of now i think multiplayer is taking off because we have finally developed the technology to make it work well and its fairly new. Also its a way of networking. Community is all the rave right now, if you look at things like myspace and facebook. I think that is kinda transferring over into the gaming crowd. Now we have clans and even social gatherings on some multiplayer games. Some people i know use xbox live as a way of communication. Since they live far apart from eachother they can communicate easily when they play Call of Duty on xbox live. Basically i dont think single player will ever die, but as of now multiplayer is expanding and growing so many game developers are catering to the new technologies. Just my opinion. thanks for reading.

As long is XBL is not available in all countries, and not everyone can connect to XBL, games with epic single players will still be huge.

not for all games. halo 3 singleplayer, as soon as you've finished, dead. but that's the only game i have in which the single player dies. dont worry, as long as companies keep turning out games like Half life, portal, call of duty (which has both good single and multiplayer), ghost recon, etc. single player wont die.

I totally agree with this, the past few years i've been heavily into online gaming. I didn't play more than 3-4 single player games. Now I don't have time to play games for hours on end like I used to, and I find myself appreciating a good single player experience.

True.

Its very rarely i can play some multiplayer for a long period of time. Best multiplayer is coop with friends, all that deathmatch, capture the flag or what not is getting very tiresome.

Single player games are better and with a better story and more interesting missions most of the times

I do not want to be forced to share my gaming experience with strangers from the internet and just playing some mindless killing skirmish game ...

I prefer playing solo and enjoy a great game just for myself and not to be interfered with idiots from the internet...

Agreed. I haven't read every post in this thread, but it seems like most people love the SP campaign still. That is the only reason I play. I swore off online play awhile ago, because I got sick of the community. Yes, there are guys I love to play with, but it just seemed that so much of the online play wasn't about learning and having fun, but dominating and trash talking. I really really hope that games continue to have epic single player campaigns. It is scary to me when a company like EA comes out and outright says they will be focusing most of their efforts on the multiplayer aspects of games in the future. I hope that never happens. Game companies need to realize that it is the games that have amazing single player campaigns that get voted time and time again for Game of the Year.

I must admit I really struggle when a game is only 4-5 hours long - it seems like it is over before you can really get your teeth into it.....

And also - I simply don't have the time to spend hours upon hours on Xbox Live - I would rather invest that time into a single player campaign that holds me captivated for it's entire story......(I'm thinking of games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, GTA 4 etc etc)

I recently rented out ghost recon 2 and was disappointed to find out that after about 3 hours of game play I was already half way through - excellent game but it will only take another seesion and I'll probably finish it - and then it's value is retained through multiplayer - but I guess that what was the developers were aiming for I suppose....

Thanks for all the responses to my intial thoughts

I agree with you there. I spend most of my time playing offline. Having a long single player campaign is very key for me. I really like the games like Mass Effect and KOTOR where you can play the game and get different endings and different outcomes from main quests and side quests. You can have two totally different outcomes and playthroughs. The same applies for Fable as well. These kind of games really keep my interest.
