the only reason i check on reviews is to see how the game is technically, pretty much the only thing i need to see

when im looking for my next purchase i always check the reveiw, but the main desider is the game demo. recently i was making a ourchace between crack down and Army of 2. everyone sid crackdown but i hated the demo. me and my friend are enjoying army of two
You're missing out on a lot. Plus Gamespot is so off base a lot of the time, if you're going to use reviewers as your soul influence at least look at other sites too.If it gets below an 8 on GameSpot, I don't buy it. There are simply too many good games out there to warrant a purchase on something that is sub-par. I don't remember the last 8.0 that I actually liked a lot. I don't think there is one.

You take reviews a little too seriously. That,or you're joking...which I hope you are.If it gets below an 8 on GameSpot, I don't buy it. me and my friend consider game informer the "god" of all video game reviews. then gamespot and after that X-play.
I've seen that alot. That gives me the idea that the person reviewing the game does'nt like the game in general or just isn'nt that good at games period.Game reviews can have some clout in my purchases. What's annoying, however, is finding two conflicting reviews of a game; for instance, one site gives the game a 5.0 and another site gives it an 8.0.

To be honest, I tend to enjoy games that got at least an 8 on IGN, I guess the reviewers have the same taste in games that I do. But at the same time, I won't get a game just because it got a high score, I still haven't played RDR but that's because to me, it just looks like a western GTA.
I would have missed out on a lot of great games, if I followed reviews.
So no, absolutely NO! And thats not trying to sound cool or anything...Thats finding the things I like, and enjoying them.
That's because you already made the decision that an arbitrary number denotes quality. If it gets a 7.5, you've already told yourself its a mediocre game.If it gets below an 8 on GameSpot, I don't buy it. People really shouldn't rely so heavily on reviews because they are all part of the business. The big AAA game(talking about big market, not reviews) all start with an 8.5 at least. Game Informer is biggest business reviews outlet, but what do you expect from a publication owned by Gamestop. As you can clearly see here, lots of people buy based on review scores, the higher the scores in Game Informer, the more likely people are to buy those games.
Or maybe we know what we like? 100 Xbox 360 games and no regrets. I have enjoyed plenty of "bad" games. Too Human, Clive Barker's Jericho, The Godfather 2, The Last Remnant, Viking Battle for Asgard, and etc. If I listened to reviews I would have missed out on well over 30 of my games that I have enjoyed. It isn't hard to read through a review for technical issues and watch some gameplay footage to see if a game looks appealing to you. I don't care if the reviewer gave it a 5 if it looks good to me and isn't plagued with glitches I will definitely buy it. Maybe not for $60 but down the road. Although I did buy Too Human for $50 and I have no regrets.[QUOTE="seankane"]
Honestly, I think people who dont use reviews are being a bit hard-headed, and possibly just saying it cuz they think its 'cool' to tell people you make your *own* opinions, as if it makes you sound grown up or something.

You're lucky to have the luxury of playing so many games. After 50 or so, reviews probably don't matter anymore, since you'll be dipping well below the "high-marks" games.
I hate playing bad games. So, the 8.0 limit is justifiable in my mind. If you're getting a 7 you're just doing too many things wrong for me to want to play it.
I don't like GTA IV, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Burnout Paradise, etc. and they all got great scores.
Maybe I am limiting myself by not playing certain games. I'm starting to get a feel for the publishers, developers, and review sites. Still, fun factor wise, what's a really good underscoring game?

problem solved
I read various reviews, watch videos of the game and try to rent or get a demo first. This ensures I make the right choice.
i hate to admit it, but yes, they do have a pretty big effect on my purchases.. some games i am so interested in, i just buy them as soon as i can..
example?
prototype: bought it, loved it a great deal and thought it was atleast worth a 9.5 (graphics dont mean much to me) it was just that fun to me.. the review came in at about an 8 though.. it pointed out some flaws i hadnt noticed myself.. and then i enjoyed it less.. :S
If I like it I will buy it. Yes, I even like and own Hour Of Victory and Battle For The Pacific. Yes, there are some glitches in Hour Of Victory but I still like it, as I love WWII FPS games. Some games get rated too high, personally... some examples are Halo 3, Bioshock and Fallout 3 for some examples.Ashley_wweBioshock and Fallout 3 deserve the ratings they got imo. Though I agree with the Halo one. But especially bioshock. So unique and such a great story.
Negative! I NEVER let any review/reviewer make or break a game purchase for me. I rather experience the game myself & if it turns out great then I will be happy if not....I will be happy. You know why? I will be happy because I...yes...I bought this game with my own choice. Some reviews are WAY off when it comes to some game scores, but that's their feelings towards the game & not everyone will feel the same. How many games have gamespot or other sites gave low scores to & you've said "WHAT?!!!!!"?
I don't trust them 100% (Lost Odyssey got a 7.5 and it''s one of my favorite games) but if something gets a shockingly bad score from a ton of sources I'll at least think twice about buying it outright.
Yes they do. Everyone should use metacritic. Its a godsend.
Why would you ever drop 60$ on game that has an average review of a 20 or a 30?
Its great to know which games are universally acclaimed, which are contested, and which ones just suck.
I of course will play games for myself to see if I like them, but if a game has a mixed review, it may stop me from spending a wasted 60 dollars.
Yeah i dislike when people don't buy a certain game just because gamespot or whoever gave it a 5 or 7 for them its automatically bad.some people should try the game out.Theres always renting.Negative! Well you obviously do little else in your life but play video games, so yea, I can see how after a while, you'd *need* to play the lower reviewed games, or else you'd just be at home staring at a wall.
Me? My free time is valuable. I dont get a ton of time to game, and I dont have an unlimited supply of money, so what I spend my time and money on needs to be worth it. I cant just 'try out' mediocre-reviewed games in the HOPE that it'll turn out enjoyable.
Also gameplay footage is rarely the best thing to go off of. For one, its usually publisher/developer-picked footage, which means they purposefully dont put in anything thats gonna deter you from buying, and two, there's sooooo many things that some basic gameplay footage doesn't tell you about the game.
Again, the point is that reviews are a resource, and a valuable one. I'm not saying to completely base your opinions off of them, as I specifically said in my post that they're only useful information to use to make your *own* opinions on. There really isn't any reason to ignore them. Some people's opinions may not be valid, but you'd be surprised at how similar many of us are and how a common concensus on something is a 'common concensus' for a damn good reason.
