You're paying for live just like everyone else so you can play any way you like, if you don't want to use a mic, don't. The tossers who get upset over people not using a mic are the ones with the problem. The "community" aspect is vastly over-rated, little more than dickheads screaming over the mic for no reason and clan members muttering away about the best way to cheat the other team.
Personally I keep my mic on when I play but I don't speak unless I'm specifically being addressed. 99% of the time, you don't need to say anything, yet if you are a good player you'll still win for your team. I've found this on RS Vegas, Lost Planet and Halo 3. What little talking there is tends to be people complaining about being killed or people talking to their friends (or their dog) obviously forgetting that their mics are switched on.
To summerise, if people don't like players not using mics, tough **** Get over it, it's not your concern how others choose to play. Recieving orders from some drunken aggressive stranger over a mic isn't everyone's idea of fun, oddly enough.
