I thought Surround Sound was something that was unnecessary and was a waste of money, then my aunt bought me one for my birthday and all I can say is wow. Its not something that you have to get to up your gaming experience, long as you can see and hear your game your good but if you have the extra cash I suggest you get one. So what is you guys thoughts on surround sound?

I have a surround sound system. Games like COD4, GTA4, Oblivion, Halo 3, etc. I play in surround sound but for sports games and certain games online I could really do without.

Yes, I have a nice surround sound system. It helps out immensely in games like COD4. I cannot tell you how many kills I have gotten just from being able to listen to where my opponent is. It really gives you a great advantage over those playing in stereo.

I got sourround sound for christmas about 2 years ago and it's flat out amazing. I love hearing guys behind me and doing a quick spin and spray and they're left dead saying WTF how'd he hear me.

I bought my surround sound a few years ago and it's just phenomenal compared to regular sound. As for gaming, the current way I have my HDTV set up and where my surround sound is, I can't play with it which sucks. But the speakers on my tv are rather decent so i'm good without it for now.

Surround sound > stereo sound, no doubt about it. Dont you just love it when the sound is affected to where your character is facing...I just love it in CoD4 or RSV2 that while on mission briefing or under fire and you look sideways and the sound transfers as well. :D

those are good for a small space. a lot of it will really depend on the size of the room you're putting it in. my living room is a pretty good size so i needed a bigger system. i think my system ended up costing about $2000 or so but that's counting the receiver, 7 speakers, and a big sub.

i have surround sound, but my TV setup is in an area where actually getting surround sound to be "surrounding" is not much of an option. i just place the bass as well as all the speakers on top of my TV cabinet. works a lot better than it sounds.

Arg! thats one of my pet peeves. People who have surround sound but place all of them at the front. My friend had this set up until he heard my surround setup and he actually moved them into surrounding the couch (doesn't look the greatest, but sound amazing), and man it is about 50 times better!

Surround sound gaming is awesome, and can be done pretty cheap. You can buy surround sound headphones, I recommend the headphones from Tritton, or you can get a cheap surround sound system, I have one from Sony that only cost about 120 bucks and works great. I was sold on surround sound when playing Splinter Cell Double Agent multiplayer. I was playing as a merc and everything was really quiet, then I heard a spy making a racket behind me and to my right, I basically snap turned and fired and killed the guy instantly. Never would have been able to do that without surround sound.

so you've taken the step to a decent Home theater in a box i see. Now an even bigger step is a true home theater, with a proper reciever, subwoofer and speakers. It really is another huge leap, i got mine piece by piece due to cost, (boxing day is a huge help) and i mean i paid just over $1000 for my system, which is worth around $2800 - $3000 new. When you can just sit there playing call of duty, and all of a sudden a car blows up beside you, you actually think a car blew up beside you.

IMO, its a crime to be playing on consoles, especially with a decent HDTV, and not have proper sound to go with it. You're not getting the true experience of the gameplay. On that note, I have to reinforce what others have said that the cheapo HTiB systems don't do gaming justice. You really need to buy fronts/surrounds/center/sub separately (with the same imagery, of course) in order to do it right. For those who say its not worth it, trust me, if you have listened to a system put together piece-by-piece, it is 10x's better. And budgets are always a challenge, but just buy a little bit every now and then and build it over time. I would much rather have some decent front speakers hooked up to a nice receiver than a HTiB at the same price, just to have "surround." The only downside I think is you really can't use a mic when you start to increase the volume as everyone will hear the entire game as feedback. :)

I have imitation surround sound off my Sony Bravia HDTV. Pretty gimmicky, but you notice it every once in a while.

Yes I do...I've been spoiled with sound quality and I can't go back. It just sounds terrible to go back to stereo...just as terrible as it is to go back to standard definition television. It's just something about that sub-woofer and background noise that makes the games much more exciting to play.

I don't have surround sound yet. I'd like to buy one but at the moment there are other things in which I must spend my money, so it'll have to wait.
