Stories in a game matter based on the genre of the game. If the game is an all-out shooter or open-world game..the story has to be very loose and open to allow a general progression through the game without pushing player through certain doors. If the game is an RPG or adventure, then story is VERY important. These games will just fall apart without a good story driving it.. I just finished GRAW yesterday and with my sporadic playing (it took me 7 months to finish the game) I remember a few things about the story..but not much..something about being in Mexico..and some General..and football or something..what did I care? I was shooting at the red diamonds. If you had one, you got shot..simple..

For me, it depends on the game.  PSU, for instance.  I've barely playe the story mode, at all.  I like PSU for playing online with friends, doing runs, levelling up, whatever.  But Oblivion or Kameo, these games are fun for the story.  So it depends on the game and what I want from it, I guess.

To me, it is.
But i have a friend who has owned GoW sence the day it came out, and he has not Played the Single Player ONCE, all he does is multi-play all day long with his Clan or Random People.

I asked him why, he said:
its sad to say, But Single player has No Plce in todays gaming world, the only game that should have storys are RPG's.
All others should just be multi-player only, if you wand a story in a game, Buy a Wii Baby.

it matters the genre.
Shooters need a decent story
Action games need a pretty good story
RPGs need a fantastic story (especially JRPGs)

It depends on the genre and the individual games as some games could easily go without having a proper story because the action is so intense whereas slower games like rpg need a very good story.

STORY = Split screen/Multiplayer,non-online

Story will always triumph...for me anyways.

i care about story alot, and i think it's a big shame that it always seems to get put on the backburner these days. the half life and halo franchises seem to be the only ones i can think of at the moment where ppl actually care about what happens to these characters and worlds, and i think we need more ppl pushing that kind of thing in this industrie.

I'll take a good story over MP any day. The MP just adds replay value imo.

old school games didn't need story. Now games are becoming a mixture of a movie so stories matter. Personally i'm a writer so i care about stories.

I think the stories in games are very important. On games such as R6 Vegas, then no. I didnt follow the story whatsoever. But like many people have said, it depends on the game. Some games just NEED a good storyline to have any appeal to me at all....Final Fantasy series for example. And Resident evil. That wouldnt be as amazing as it is...without a good story behind it :)

Personally, I care about the story, but few games have stories that I care about...Just like with my movies (action movies in particular) I only like weird, sci-fi, or epic stories. If the action movie or game has nothing weird, super natural, or sci-fi in it then I disregard it because it can't hold my attention. But since there is action, I can still like the movie (example: martial arts movies).

If the game has a lackluster story, it doesn't really change my opinion of the game unless it's an rpg.

Ehh, metsa metsa. I think it's important in RPGs, but less so in other types of games. I come from an era where "Rescue the princess who got kidnapped just for the hell of it..." was a solid storyline and "I feel asleep!" was as good as the dialogue got, so perhaps my standards are a little lower. Do I wish every RPG had a story as well crafted as, say, Final Fantasy VII? Sure. But when the storylines in action games just give me an excuse to be in a sewer or a mine or a factory or any other game level stereotype, that's fine.

PS - I really wish people wouldn't post the ending to Rainbow Six Vegas. I haven't finished it yet! DAYUMN!

i really enjoy a game with a good story. Some of the ones today aren't the best, i'll admit. But a story pulls me in and want to finish the game and find out what happens. I'm just not into the MP like some of the others out there.

I always watch the stories and cut scenes in any games my first time through. If I've already seen them though and the same one comes up, I skip it.

Well, let me start by saying thanks for the lack of a spoiler tag- that's not going to ruin R6:Vegas for me, but it illustrates a point- a story helps immersion. It all depends on the type of game though...

The story is important to me, its the main reason I buy games, multiplayer comes in 2nd. Game such as tony hawks should always have a good story but for some reason project 8 barely had one, call of duty games should too.

Definitely yes. I think of online as a bonus, not a requirement. I could care less about a game if I didn't like the story. Gears of War, for one, has a good story, but it fumbles way too much on details, which dragged the game down alot for me.

Yes the story is important. (it's the main reasong I'm getting Halo 3, to find out what happens and why I liked Halo 2 better.). I loved the stroy in Half life 2. The lack of story in Gears of War really prevented me from being interested in a series of stories (only finished to see if the ending was good, I was wrong). I loved the story behind fear and I actually finished it unlike most other fps I play. The Story in the Warcraft (not WOW) games keeps me wanting more! I need a good story to invest time and effort into the story. And don't get me started on the gems that are Bioware storylines!

Um, yes! A game with out a story gets boring. When I had GTA, I would just do whatever and not play the story. Soon after I would find myself bored, and ended up starting some missions to advance the story. Even though the GTA stories aren't too compelling and thought provoking. If MGS was just gameplay and no story, it would get old fast.

I personally think that stories will always be the primary driving force behind 80% of all games. Obviously there are exceptions such as sports games, party games, god sims ect However the vast majority of games use a story as a concept within which the whole game is designed. So in that respect while the stories in some games are just tacked on as an excuse to commit copious amounts of digital violence or other activities. I do take an interest in them and in some cases the character progression and story development keep me coming back for more.

A good story is what I enjoy most about a game.  Even in FPS's and Action games a good story makes it all the more fun because it allows you to get emotionally invested in what you are doing.  If a villian is well crafted and real motivation is developed for the main character it is all the more fun to get head shots and pull off wicked combos.  Some genres don't necessarily need a strong story but it will always make a game substantially better.  I for one am not a fan of this recent trend in moving away from having a good single player story and experience and relying on online for games.  It allows for memorable moments (like when I killed every member of the other team holding up ina room in the Ivory Tower in Halo 2 they had the shotgun, rocket launcher and sniper rifle while I used only plasma grenades), but it doesn't really make me remember a game as a whole very much.  I still to this day think back on Final Fantasy VII and just reminisce in my head about the characters and the great story and it always make me smile and want to pop the game in again just to revisit the great story.  Well developed characters and a driving story at the end of the day are what make games the most memorable and enjoyable in the long term for me.

Story is as important as any other aspect of the game for me. What I find it odd is posts like "why devs include something other than bullets in a game" as the original poster did. Are we all alike ? Heck no.
Cut-scenes, plot, everything is part of the experience, than complain about game beeing too-short and stuff. Real gamers experience the whole thing.

Old games didn't need a story ? It's more they couldn't afford to have one. This submission to low-tech keeps me wonder...

While it matters more in some genres than others, I generally like a decent story in my games. It's good to have a general idea of what is going on in the world of a game. The story is especially important in games of the RPG genre; it's the main feature that keeps them going.

Stories matter to me and I like to see what creative storyies they put together and how they link different squals together. I find that devlopers are going more into more of a gameplay gameplay gameplay but that's good i don't mind that at all but you need a story.

Don't kid yourself, Story will always be important to the success of a game. A good game with a good story will keep gamers interested in it long after they finish the game and have done everything the game has to offer. Without that story gamers will move on just as fast as they got into it.
