It doesn't have to be just FPS like GRAW is in the third person. I can say that it has for me without a shadow of a doubt. I talked to my wife about joining but she is dead set against it. Anyway, I think these games get the blessing of the military because its a recruitment tool, a very effective one at that. It a simple matter of propaganda. I have a trivia question, Who said, "He that controls the youth; controls the future?"

Go watch Black Hawk Down. If you still want to join, then more power to you. Just don't base your entire decision on completely glamorized views like GRAW. One of my good friends is over in Iraq right now and he laughs whenever he comes home and plays something like GRAW or Rainbow Six because they're so far from reality.

I think many people get there "fix" of warfare from FPS so they don't want to join. We all love the technolgie but no one wants to die. How many times have you restarted a level? well in real life you don't get a restart button, you get a your f-ed button.

I think Military FPS give me a good understanding as what goes on and to appreciate the things that are done, but 99% of the time the Military is no where near GRAW or R6

The games definitely prepare people for violence. You can't spend an hour a day gunning virtual people down and not think it plays into how you think overall. Some more than others, but it definitely has an effect. It isn't healthy for anyone. As far as joining up for the army, it is pretty obvious that works too. The Army even sponsored a game - Americas Army.

From my POV, you have to be mental top join the military, and games like COD2, which gives you a view of what it must have been like during that war time, I'd say you have to trully be mental to want to join after beating COD2 on Veteran :P

go watch jarhead instead of black hawk down.  it's more realistic to what the military is like.    the uniforms and the equipment may look the part but the rest of the experience isn't there.  I'm a Staff Sgt in the USAF and here's what the military is like...
  • go get these 10+  vaccinations (as required)
  • go pee in this cup for the 6th time this year (supposedly random drug testing)
  • shoot at this paper target for training and be expected to whoop ass if we ever need you to
  • attend course on cultural diversity/ethnic sensitivity training (once every 1-2 years)
  • watch powerpoint like presentation on how to identify unexploded bombs, what to do if you're captured by terrorists, etc. (yearly)
  • have a tube of your blood drawn to check for HIV (yearly)
  • don't go to war without having your cavities filled...
  • yearly physical fitness tests that seemingly out-of-shape people pass with flying colors
  • upon joining the military you have roughly a 50% of piloting a desk instead of an F-22 (see Ewan Macgregor's character in BlackHawk Down)
i could go on but here's the stuff they never put into the recruiting posters, commercials, or "military videogames".  PS, i love all the tom clancy games but they're the equivalent reality of a james bond movie to me.

actually the gov. created games to intice us, to train us, and to improve reflexes. who do you think would work better in this situation in general. a. a 2 year trained pilot of the un maned predator drone aircraft, or b. a kid that just turned 22 with 2 years training under his belt for it, plus a lifetime of videogames, and flight simulations. huh? think about it.

almost 99% of the stuff you do in video games like Rainbow Six and GRAW you wont do in real life. In real life you most just train just incase you ever have to go to war. You dont go in the military being expected to follow tanks and shoot people while there behind cars or bust in a building. You might have to one day but probably wont be like in the video games. They over exagerate in the videogames and movies.

and his quote was, son in the jungle at pitch black early morning. and all of a sudden a firefight breaks out. the enemy then used green tracers, we used the red-orange ones. he said it looked like freakin star wars some nights over there.

but not to say i do not respect everyone that goes into the military. because i do. i wanted to join once, but i have a very open mind and a good theory that if i went in. my own country would kill me before i got out. because if i go in, im gonna go in deep. so i just play the games instead.

lol well be prepared the pres wants more people in the armed forces. and no one is signing. well not enough any way. so be prepared for the draft. and dont say there cant be one, because why would we still have to register for it, you dont register for a contest if the prize has already been won, know what i mean.

If the draft would happen i'd join ROTC and have a desk job. i'm 16 so its a big thing to me. Theres no way i'm going anywhere as a private. I don't want to be a bullet holder. I'm currently visiting colleges for Aerospace/mechanical engineering. I'd go work on Jets. But I'm thinking of working in the racing industury. I'm scared that theres gonna be a draft. If anything happens with Iran theres a good chance that could happen.

atleast you are thinking with your head on your sholders, props to you too. but if the draft were to happen it would be 18-19year olds first, then 20-21 year olds second. and they prolly wont need any right after that, so in a few more years they will draft another set of 18-20 year olds.

even if there would be a draft i promise to any of you I would go even if i got drafted. I would first probably try to get out of it if it doesnt work then I would leave the country and come back later. The reason is cause i dont want to waste my time and having the chance of dieing when I can go to college.raylewisnfl52

I keep games in games, and reality in reality.

My question to all the anti-video games advocates is.... how come when a teenager shoots and kills an alien/zombie/monster in violent fashion in a game NOT okay, when all of a sudden it IS okay when he plays the Army endorsed "America's Army" okay, but as long as what he/she is shooting at is a stereotypical middle-eastern rendered human character?

Hmm...... just a thought.

Not in the slightest for me,As other have said and from the experiances of four good friends. The military came down to being stationed in Texas, Fixing humves on a base all day long, Or floating on a navy ship around hawaii and making extra money by cutting peoples hair on the ship. Though some may have had interresting experiances of action. Most is alot of boredom so i've been told.

If anything it does the complete opposite.

After playing Rainbow Six - Vegas, I disliked the idea og actually putting your life on the line to save stupid hostages. Mission failed if you lose a team member or kill civilians..

Funny how in my 9th grade of high school they gave me Jrotc as an elective. I hated that class and war. I strongly disliked the army. But then in my senior year, a friend of mines and I downloaded America's Army because it was free. We were like cool! We started playing it everyday all day. We got to class and play out as if we were soldiers, pretend shooting, throwing grenades, etc.. We memorized guns. And each day I got home from school I'd watch Black hawk down twice a day everyday wishing I was there.(and I'm not exagerating) Plus having a father who was in the army take notice to my sudden interest in the army started to encourage me to join. After a while my friend stop playing so I stop playing because it got boring without him. And as I stop playing the army influenced over me was lessening. Now my mind set about the army is screw that I don't want to die. I'll just stick to the video games.

i guess the reason the make war games(like world war 2 and stuff...not fantasy shooters) is to learn.
you see what kind of gun they use,the uniforms, who they fought , and how much pain it can cause.
i wont recruite anyone. it only works toward people whos family are military freaks, runaways or just to fell good in serving your country(no offense if i did i got a couple of realy good friends in the army)

No way, playing Full Spectrum Warrior and other games that just shows me the amount of sh!t they have to go through! Seriously BHD is a great movie, but if you watch BHD its supposed to make you NOT want to join, if you seriously think that how much of a fuc4ing over they got there in somalia was good or 'cool'

Yeah my Grandpa (now dead) got shot in the leg while invading berlin in WWII in General Patton's army. He rolled down a ditch and stayed there for 3 days before he could be rescued. Got a purple heart and bla bla. Doesnt sound very fun to me though. So I figure to stay at home.
