All 360's have problems based on how well they're taken care of. It's less of a problem now than before but if you mistreat your 360, you'll eventually get them.

Everything breaks. Nothing is perfect.

Yes your 360 will break if you buy one. Nothing lasts forever. Everything and everyone dies. That's life.

If your worried, then by all means buy the extended warranty and rest at ease and relax while you game with 6 Million people on Xbox Live.

It all depends on how you treat your 360.  I bought mine last year and it still works fine.

I understand that, but I was just trying to point out that it is highly unlikely it would last like 20 years.

lol

3 red lights aren't random problems with 360's. They're just confirmation that your 360 is dead; either you or someone/something did something to your 360 and it stopped working... It's like having an iPod, and you accidentally drop it. If it doesn't turn on again, that's not because of the iPod but because you didn't take care of it.

He meant will his 360 last through this console cycle without any red lights. He was afraid of going through like 4 360's in a couple of years.

Are you reading what I am posting!?! If you take care of your 360, nothing will happen to it. All I am trying to say is that 360's now have less problems but if you don't take care of it, it will break.

The problems are still there, but MS has replaced the disc drives three times. The newest premiums have BenQ drives, which make less noise and probably don't break as easily.

I'm on my 4th console. I keep my 360 on top of my dresser, completely ventilated all around.

Explain that with your reason and logic.....please

I'm not even trying to start an argument. It just pisses me off when you say its the consumers fault when a 360 breaks.

You sound just like the people from Microsoft.

I'm sorry if I came off the wrong way. :)

I just want to say two things: 1. The Xbox360 does indeed have the best game lineup of the three major consoles right now. It also has a killer lineup coming for the future. With that said... 2. Anyone who tries to claim that merely taking good care of your 360 will immunize someone from it breaking down is being either intellectually dishonest or ignorant. The 360 uses shoddy hardware in its construction. This is not a fanboy statement but a documented, historical fact. Hell, even Microsoft has admitted to it (grudgingly) by eventually agreeing to extend the warranty on the console to a full year. Articles continue to leak out that the console was rushed to market and that the problems still are not fixed at this time. Is the console more reliable than it was at original release? Without a doubt. Is it still the most likely of the three major consoles on the market to date to break on you? It sure is. Would I buy a new 360 without getting an extended warranty? Not in a million years. (Full disclosure, I've had one 360 replaced and my HD-DVD add-on no longer works, but MS has refused to replace it due to it being one month past its three month warranty.)

I have 2 friends with launch consoles and they keep they're 360 well-ventilated and they never play that much. Maybe 1 hour a day or 3 days out of the week. I'm not saying that the 360 will never break down but if you take care of it well, it should last you through this console generation.

Well now, I wouldn't call one hour a day or three days a week typical usage, or, as you have phrased it, "taking care of the console". I would call it ignoring it. OF COURSE if you have a 360 and almost never play it, stick on a shelf somewhere or something, then it isn't very likely to break. However, a well constructed piece of hardware SHOULD be able to handle a bit more stress than what you're describing without failure rates acting like Olympic pole vaulters. I still feel that the 360 is the best console overall of the three current ones due to all of the games available, but hardware wise it has real, definite problems.

Well whats strange is that I bought a premium 360 @ launch and it has worked perfectly.I then decided to get my kids the core unit for christmas of 06.Yesterday it just gave me the ring of death and has to be sent in for repairs.I wish I could twist MS arm into sending me the elite!!

TC, whatever you do, don't listen to funkdaddy. he's lying. no matter how well you take care of your xbox, no matter how well ventilated it is, it will die on you. i cleaned mine every day, it was well ventilated and the power brick was placed no where near the xbox and it still got the 3 red lights when i pressed the power button. what surprised me most was the fact that it was working earlier in the day but crapped out at night after being off for a few hours. i've had the 360 for one year and it died, coincidently on april fools day. damn i was pissed (but laughing on the inside when i remembered it was april fools day.) it's the fault of ms for not having better quality control. but on the bright side, if it dies under a year, your covered by the warranty and they'll fix it for free.

Yes. I really want him to buy defective 360's . If you had read what I posted, I said that the chance of getting the 3 red lights will decrease substantially if you take care of your 360. I never said he'll never get them.

yeah but they should last longer that 6 months - 1 year like my last two did. and yes i took care of them, proper ventilation for the system and the brick. but they were older systems so im hoping brand new ones will last longer but even if it doesnt im gonna keep gettin it fixed or w/e bc i couldnt live w/out some xbox 360 lol

i read everything you posted and according to your posts, the only factor to contribute to a busted 360 is lack of maintaince. truth is yes there are defective 360's out there, probably more than ms is willing to admit to, but just because you don't clean it doesn't mean it'll die on you. i never cleaned my ps one, n64, or psp and they never gave my problems. i did however clean my xbox 1 and 360 and they both died. the xbox 1 had a faulty lens in the dvd drive and the 360's processor disconnected from the motherboard. and to be honest, that's the problem with the 360, the system heats up, over time the board tends to warp, if the warp is severe enough, the processor disconnects. that's why ms is now putting epoxy on the chip to hold it in place in case of a warp.

old motherboard (no epoxy)

new motherboard (note epoxy on cpu and gpu)

link

@TC, wait a while to buy a 360 or buy the elite. that way it'll be less likely that the console would fail.

The problem is not the users care, its the 360 itself. I never hardly get to play mine (Full Time College Student and I work full time) and I take excellent care of it and mine still gave me the three red lights. I've only had it since November of 2006. Never thought I would get the three red lights but I was sadly mistaken. Good thing I bought the extended warranty though. Whatever the problem is still has not been corrected. Microsoft should not be allowed to continue to sell a defective product. I love my 360 though.

Meh, I still have my launch 360, and it works just fine, the only red lightes I ever got was when the cable wasn't plugged in right.  I'ev droped the thing, cary it around in the back of my pickup, taken in on the bus in a backpack, and it still works just fine.  I keep in in my entertainment centre, right next to all the other heat throwing things there.  Only problem i ever had, was the drawer wasn't opening right once, found out I had broken the faceplate, replaced it and it worked fine.

I don't know what the hell people are doing to their 360s to make them fail that they claim they are.Â
