I have been excited about Fable II since its announcement in '06. I played Fable casually for a while years ago but found myself displeased (of course) with the lack of the promised ambitious inclusions by Peter Molyneux. Overall I found the game to be enjoyable, don't get me wrong, but nothing close to addictive and orignal as I had hoped it would be. In fact, I found myself more drawn to the unique ambition demonstrated by Molyneux than the execution of what he desired Fable to be. "Plant an acorn, grow a tree" became a phrase that made me undeniably excited about the soon-to-be Fable series and future Molyneux IPs in general.

After reading the Variety article that presents Molyneux's note attached to the review build of Fable II, I find myself severely challenged in anticipating my previously intended purchase. Here is the article: http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/10/peter-moores-re.html

To sum it up, Molyneux has asked reviewers, "...please, please, please, please, pleae find somebody who doesn't play games, watch them play it and see how their world turns out, because I think it's only when you see those differences that the unique experiences come through."

While arguably Molyneux wants to generate an exhaustive and just approach to Fable II's reviews, I feel that this "favour" could mean the downfall of another ambitious project. (I initially tossed aside the fears aroused by the button-mashing occupations for players who are uninterested in playing as paupers for 10 hours.)

What do you think?

I think it's going to be a great game. He only showed features that were already in the game, so that is a good sign. And I'm sure there is quite a bit of stuff in there that he hasn't talked about. Anyways I already have it reserved and paid for so I cannot wait!

Points taken, but what of the favor to reviewers to view the game from a non-gamer's standpoint? At the foundation, a sequel should not be trying to rope in new gamers (new to the market, anyway). Doesn't this scare you that the game lacks complexity? Has he dropped the ball and dumbed down the gameplay too much?

I thought he asked them to get a non-gamer to play through it, as well as the reviewer themselves.

Well he's selling it to people who have grown up playing games, so what does he suggest for the rest of us? Watch your parents play? Basically it sounds like Fable all over again.

It's still going to kick ass. I mean he said his entire reputation is riding on this game.

I still have high hopes for the game, but I'm definitely waiting for some reviews before/if I decide to buy it. And if it does flop, we only have to wait a week after for Fallout 3 to release.

It would be interesting to see what non-gamers have to say about it though.

It makes sense. he just wants people to realise how unique his game can be from person to person, and tat you'll see the biggest differences when you get someone who doesn't play games to play the game (which will never happen, because they don't play games).

I think he's probably pretty anxious to find out a non-gamers point of view on it too.

I agree how that would be interesting. It would also be interesting to see how non-gamers like the idea of chainsawing a man in half in Gears, but non-gamers are Wii owners, not 360 owners. If I was a non-gamer, I certainly wouldn't be jumping onboard a sequel to an RPG on a hardcore system, I'd want to wank my Wiimote in lightsaber battle maybe. I don't know. I love Molyneux. I love one-button combat and dogs. But will this game be too dumbed down for me? For you? I fear it might be the case.
