It's a great game! Don't listen to the reviews, again! IGN has proven once again that they have no clue on how to review a game. First off this game is a flawed masterpiece, which is a term I've heard a few people say. It's has some really, really great gameplay mechanics, some which don't always work out the way you'd hope, but are still inventive none the less.
There is no problem with the graphics, they actually look really good! The lighting is also very well done. Fire spreads at a speed that would seem normal. You can even set stuff on fire and use as a torch. You're character, when hurt bad enough, will drip blood and leave a shiny trail of plasma where ever he walks. The enemies can also pick up on this scent. You can heal by applying a medical spray similiar to RE and bandage them up. Your character will even have the bandages on, they just don't disappear once applied.
The first person view is cool as well, because you can blink and close your eyes (I don't understand why you'd need to close your eyes though :?), but you can blink by clicking R3. It's usefull to refocus your vision or to get the blood out of your eyes.
Combine objects to make even deadlier weapons is fun as well. True the controls are a little cumbersome at first, but after a short acclimation, you'll have them down.
The story is decent so far and I really like the DVD-esque pause menu that shows how far you are through the chapter. Also when you turn the game off and restart later you'll be treated to a, "Previously on Alone in the Dark" video that gives you a run down of the story up the that point. It's handy if you've forgotten about characters or parts of the story. I also like that you can skip any part of the game if you get stuck. I havent' encountered anything that would require me to use this function, but it's great for those that might need it.
This is truly a flawed masterpiece. Eden Studios really needed a MGS4 budget, then we really would have seen this game shine!
