So first off, I got an Xbox 360 in November 2005. I got the 3 red lights about 2 months out of warranty (warranty being a year) . When I heard I had to pay $140 to get it fixed (I was out of warranty anyway so what do they care) I decided to search the web and try to fix it myself to save a whopping $140. I got a torx driver and opened it up and tried the eraser fix (putting erasers on the GPU RAM so that they would stay in place.. that is if they were poorly soldered, shame that was not my issue) That did not work and so I sent it in and paid $140 to have it fixed. They take a week to get the box to me and another 2 weeks to just send me back the same broken xbox with a nice little note that said that since I had opened it I had tampered with it and they refused to fix it. Then they said they would get my $140 ack to me in 4 business weeks. EXCUSE ME? You aren't going to fix it because I opened it?! I PAID $140 FOR IT AND FOR SOMETHING THAT COSTS $400 IN THE FIRST PLACE I BETTER HAVE MORE THAN A 1 YEAR WARRANTY. AND IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO FIX IT YOU BETTER HAVE MY MONEY BACK IN LESS THAN A MONTH!! Forget you Microsoft, I can live without the cheaply/poorly made Xbox 360. Shame I cant play Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed now, but you know what? MS wil never get any more money from me, EVER.

That's policy with almost any electonics company. I was a manager at Circuit City years ago. If you tamper with it, 9 times out of 10 they're not going to repair it at all.

If he had opened it and wanted it fixed in Warrenty (if it was) and they said no, fair enough, but in this case he paid hardcash to fix a unit... cash for service, they said no. They were in the wrong. If only people would do some research on MS before doing business with them they could avoid them before they can be ripped off.

Wow Geeks can be mean. I don't know why people don't like reading stuff like this on forms, and want you to blog about it, like anyone reads other peoples blogs. That is an indirect way to tell people, we don't want to read this, which is fine. The tamper thing, yeah don't hold that against Microsoft, like someone else said every company does that. It is sad that you are left up a creek without a paddle. Although I have both a PS3 and Xbox360 and our first 360 broke in one month... lucky for us, that means it was still under warranty, and hopefully the second one will not have any problems. I still like my 360 better then the PS3 for now.

ok here...

1) get a tissue

2) save up some money

3) get a refurbished 360 if you want (you can't resist MS)

4) wait for mass effect and other insane 360 games

5) stop wasting forum space

That's a dead shame, Nothing Happened to mine yet. However, this is the reason why I'll literally NEVER buy a launch console till literally 6 months after it comes out. My first dreamcast had a problem, my xbox 1 had the problem but thankfully not my Xbox 360. I'm actually fed up with the whining of the orginal Xbox 360's being messed up in some way. Read it and weep, ALL new consoles or electronics for the matter it happens. Why? Consoles and most electronics don't use the BEST hardware pieces, they use what can MANGAGE instead of the BEST. Why? To lose less and with a bloated prices get a profit. Just look at the computer business. Making your own computer usually 9 times out ten will be cheaper than buying one that's already made. (But companies realizing the "smart" consumers add special perks for their premade computers to be more appealing.)

yeah, Iam sure that even though I paid for the thing to be repaired it should not be repaired. I know they are not paying a highly skilled technician to resolder hardware to the motherboard.. all they are going to do is replace the motherboard. SO it is my fault that I bought a ridiculously expensive product and ridiculously expensive games for it that should just be ok with paying $140 to have it repaired when it should work in the first place? I think not. Just because I use XP does not mean I paid for it. I don't have to pay for Windows at all so I dont care. If I did I would just boot into Linux and wipe the drive. A product that expensive should not have to be repaired as often as it has to be. You know ~$450 isn't anything to sneeze at. If you paid that much for the console you would be angry if you had to pay $140 every year to just keep using it. And if you did not feel like paying that ridiculous amount to have it repaired you had better believe you would try to fix it yourself. By the way, I said I would never pay for another Microsoft product again, and as I dont have to pay for Windows I still use it. However, I would assume that most of you are so sucked into games that you simply would keep going back and buying it no matter how many times it broke.

Windows sucks just aswell. Bill Gates just knew what he was doing when he created Microsoft which is why I respect the guy, I hate his products but what can I do? He has enough money to basically do whatever he wants because he knows the way of the business world. Even though alot of people complain about it, what can you really do? Majority of the people use Window because every PC comes with it.

This really has nothing to do with this fool tampering with something and expecting them to fix it, but I saw a few people say something about him using Vista or Windows.

I am on my no# 4 console.I think its sad that thw console was rushed just to beat the ps3 to the punch, and leave millions of hardcore xbox fans with a broken system.I love the 360 ,but cant we get this done right!!!.Even the elites are having problems.I would even be willing to pay out some more cash for a system, that wont plague me with the redlights of death.Just my 2 cents.

#1: The warranty clearly states that you can't open the 360, or it is void.

#2: If you are pissed about a 1 year warranty, GET A LONGER ONE. It costs more, but if you think one year is too short you should have bought one.

In NZ, if your product doesnt last for the expected lifetime of the unit, then the company who produces it can get in alot of trouble, wonder if its the same elsewhere.

Just to explain MS behaviour here: The $140 is a compromise-price they calculated to handle the shipping and the average cost of real repairs. If they would repair tampered consoles, the average price would need to go WAY up to a level that makes repair unfeasible. $140 is a fixed price, no matter what is wrong with your console. This is why they refuse to repair consoles that have been tampered with. Everyone with a screwdriver could open his 360 and make sure that every part gets damaged in some way. This way the entire hardware becomes useless and you would get a completely new 360 for $140, even though only the RAM or some other part was affected which could have been replaced by MS. Sure, it's unfair to people where the console has only minor problems which can be fixed for $50, but it's very nice for people whos consoles are beyond repair and have to be replaced. It also simplifies the entire procedure. Otherwise they would need to estimate the price FIRST, ask for your permission to repair it and then either collect some fee for the estimation or the complete cost before returning the console to you. Then you would complain about a too complex process that should be simplyfied by paying a flat-fee. No matter what you do, somebody will always complain.

This is you saying that you got it with you're PC or you're parents/guardian paid for it and not the you illegally acquired windows for you're PC because it would be a stupid thing to admit, it's like when people wrote into a xbox magazine saying the they just bought copied games so they reported lol.

also still using windows does kind of make you're "I'm not using Microsoft blah blah blah"statement a bit less strong

If you could not afford the "ridiculously expensive games" that are played with the "ridiculously priced console" then why did you buy it in the first place? You are aware of the fact that expensive products are expensive to repair right?

You messed up not Microsoft! You tried to fix it yourself and you want someone to take the blame, grow up.

You shoudnt sweat it TC. While it is your fault for opening it, doesnt mean its a big deal.

If and when my 360 craps out ill be fine with the other 2 dependable consoles. As long as it lasts till Lost Odyssey im good. I advise you buy another console as well. God im trolling like a mad man.

I got the ring of death on my first xbox 360 (premium). I bought a core and I just used the old HDD. Then it wouldn't turn on so I took it back to circuitcity and got my money back. I plan on getting an elite one soon. I thought I was done with microsoft but I looked at all the pros of the xbox 360, and decided to stay with them. When I get the elite i'm going to get an extended warranty through the store.

In that case, just get a PS3 or Wii. They last longer so you can stop complaining about your choices.

Yeah, how bout you stop complaining about something thats your fault anyway. Anyone knows that if you open up any console from any company, you have voided the warranty, and the company wont deal with you. And for a company to have money back take so long is usual. They have many stupid people like you to deal with. Go whine and complain about this on your blog.

SO it is my fault that I bought a ridiculously expensive product and ridiculously expensive games for it that should just be ok with paying $140 to have it repaired when it should work in the first place? I think not. Just because I use XP does not mean I paid for it. wookieeassassin

I understand man bt the thing is that its a common fact with electronics. Once you open it, any form of warranty is null and void. And the company will pretty much never fix it.

That's policy with almost any electonics company. I was a manager at Circuit City years ago. If you tamper with it, 9 times out of 10 they're not going to repair it at all.

Exactly. On almost any electronic device (read warranty to confirm) if you tamper with their product (trying to fix it yourself) it voids the warranty. Now what would make you think they would fix it after your tampered with it even after the warranty expired? This isn't just Microsoft, but almost any other company. Plus they even said they were sending your money back so saying you just spent $400 on the console and then $140 to not get it fixed makes you more of an idiot.

Oh and if you haven't heard this saying "always read the fine print" then you probably don't want to buy anything that you may need a warranty for ever again. I spent the $140 when my 360 died and i do realise i should have gotten a extended warranty..... wel actually i meant to get one, but my mom bought my 360 while i was at school making that damn near impossible to get(she would only remember to get the extended warranty if i told her about 100 times which is didn't).

I am sorry that you are getting flamed, but you have made some big mistakes that have caused this. Firstly it was totally your fault you voided everything and second the fact that you have to be like everyone else that comes onto website forums and has to tell us their problems.

actually I opend it to try and fix it while it was already out of warranty. Which means, my warranty cannot be voided if I do not have one. Let us go through the thought process of why I opened up the console. I bought an xbox 360 for $400 plus tax November 2005. I had it and it worked for about 14 months. By this time I had already bought Gears of War and Guitar Hero II (with guitar). So one day my friend comes over and starts to play non game 2 (halo 2 for those who like it) and the game just freezes.. or so we thought. Then I got the 3 red lights of death when we tried to turn it back on. So I proceeded to call Microsoft about the issue. They informed me that I would have to pay $140 and I was immediately appalled at the price I would have to pay to fix it.

So I thought about it for a few days and then decided that if I could find a fix for it on the internet that sounded like it would work and I found the eraser fix. I assumed that since I was paying $140 anyway and since probably all they were going to do to fix it was to replace the motherboard (as I believe paying a technician to diagnose and fix the specific problem would be too expensive) I went and bought the supplies and opened it up and tried the fix. However it did not work. So I decided that I would go ahead and shell out the $140 and then by a 2 year warranty (after it was repaired) so this would not happen again. So they charged me the $140, took a week to send me the box and then took 2 weeks to get the unrepaired xbox 360 back to me with the nice little note that they would not repair it. I was really frustrated because I had paid $140 to have it fixed and I am almost certain they would have just replaced the motherbard to fix it anyway.

If the xbox 360 had not broken on me after ~14 months, which is most definitely should not have. But then to expect me to just shell out another $140 just to keep using my highly expensive console. So to try and save money, which when I pay that repair fee comes out of my paycheck.. and I do not work just to throw cash away, I attempted to try and fix it myself. And I know it is common, but taking 3 weeks to tell me they won't fix it and then tell me that I will get my money back for the repair in 4 weeks just made me really angry. The real problem aside from all the $ invested in that thing is that the only 2 games I really wanted to play were mass effect which is only x360 and assassin's creed which is ps3, x360 and (hopefully) pc.. but the pc version will probably be slimmed down... :-/ What a shame.. I just do not have that much money to go and get a new one either.

Well, ranting is over. btw, some of you guys are extremely rude and if something similar happened to you you would not be happy either.

This is why i said you should really stop buying things. Trying to fix it yourself (opening it up) voids everything and that includes the warranty. You may find a nice company (laughs at the thought) that would still fix it, but even that is unlikely.

Think about this if you modded your original xbox (modded meaning pirating games... or making your xbox an emulator) and then sent it in the microsoft to fix it. Well my guess would be the final test may be to turn on the console and see if it works. If it works than they would see all the sh** you put onto your xbox and guess what they would do. Not only would the bill you for the fix, but they would probably also keep your xbox and and give you a hefty fine. The reason being is that YOU bought something that is MICROSOFTS meaning that technically ISN'T truly YOURS (if you want to use the warranties and what not). So if you want to get Microsofts help in the matter than YOU MUST abide to Microsoft's rules. If you want to open the box to fix it then it does truly become YOURS.

I said my rant was over but.. I paid $140 for it to fix it. They could easily fix it. Oh well, they are losing money because I cant buy anymore games now.
