To me there is nothing better than a FPS- I like the action, the online play, ect. I can see, however, how you could get tired of them because they are flooding the market. 3rd person shooters are even starting to play like FPS ala Gears of War. But there is nothing like the excitement of FPS online play.

You hit the nail on the head. Most FPSs (and TPSs influenced by FPSs) are a little uninventive (Halo, CoD, GoW...). On the flip-side, these games can be awesome for 15-20 minutes of online gaming. In my opinion, FPSs were MADE for online gaming. Along with MMORPGs they form the cornerstone of online gaming. The problem is that they rarely extend past this. Like Ayessua said, some are amazing, and the first-person perspective can add a certain amount of drama to the game, like Bioshock or Half-Life 2.

let's see...

Last year, I bought FEAR, STALKER, Crysis, Orange Box, Halo 3, COD4, and Bioshock. I also bought RE4 and Assassin's Creed that year, but the bulk of my purchases from last year were FPS games. Hell, I even had ALL 5 of Gamespot's top 5 FPS games of 2007 and that still didn't satisfy me.

so yes, I'm starting to get bored of them and I don't plan on buying too many shooters this year. I've put more focus into JRPGs (Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey. Soon to buy Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, and Star Ocean 4), fighters (Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 off XBLA, soon to buy Soul Calibur IV and then the original Soul Calibur off XBLA), and WRPGS (soon buying Fallout 3)

And RPGs are so amazing? Look at Blue Dragon, not so well.meconate

Blue Dragon was rock solid, and I've never heard a jrpg fan who has said differently.

It's gotten to the point now that an FPS has to be REALLY special for me to keep playing it, and to be honest there really havn't been many truly special FPS's released in the past 18 months IMO.

The reason why so much of them are made is because it's popular right now. No one wants to play a great action or adventure game anymore(Zelda and Ninja Gaiden). And mostly FPS's have the best multiplayer, Have you ever seen any of your buddies play a single player game anymore? It's sad to see the action/adventure genre is gonna see the tombstone soon.

I totally agree most FPS's are made for online,

They'll never die. There's plenty of great rpgs coming out and action adventure games. Just not that many. Fps's are fun and all but give me a great singleplayer game and that's something i'll remember.

I think a big percentage of games that come out are FPS's and so gamers just get a taste for them. That creates more and more demand for them and so more get made. That cycle goes around and around. Personally, I'll buy any type of game as long as its good, it's just a pity there aren't more good releases for other genres as often as there are for FPS's.

I run a union about shooters, and as a little project for it, I made a list of every shooter I've played for any length of time. Right now, I'm at 123 entries. So no, I do not get tired of shooters.

they're great for multiplayer, but since the majority of games are FPS, I'm beginning to get sick and tired of the genre. Thats why I like to mix things up; I buy rpg's, fighting games, racing games to keep it fresh and entertaining. Although, FPS are always a genre that I look for.

I enjoy some shooters, however especially on this gen it seems that 5 out of every 7 or so games are shooters, and at times it feels like how PC games are starting to be more and more MMO's everyone wants part of Halo's pie, just like pc publishers want part of Blizzard/WoW's pie. Seems like their are a few gems out there, but alot of 'fluff' on FPS games too.

Wow. I can't begin to tell you how wrong I think you are on that statement.

Let's look a couple months back at GTA4, yes it had a multiplayer component, but that was not the selling feature, it was the SP campaign. Same logic can be applied to Metal Gear Solid 4, it sold well and it was 98% because of the story.

BioShock was a single player game and it was very successful, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Too Human, Devil May Cry 4, Banjo 3, the new Tomb Raider game and the list goes on. In fact multiplayer only games like Shadowrun are in worse shape than singleplayer only games. The Battlefield franchise (console anyway) has modified its formula to incorporate a single player campaign.

I won't argue that in some cases FPS, MP focused games sell better than SP only, but if you take the campaign out of Halo or Call of Duty 4 they wouldn't sell as well.
