I think some people here are confused about how games win GOTY. It's not about consumer acclaim, its all about proffessional opinion and critical acclaim. Anyone who doesn't think GTAIV is in the running is a madman, for one thing. It's one of the most highly rated games accross the board ever. Forget what games you like and think are good, forget what you think should win. Hell, if all things were right in the gaming world Grand Theft Auto would probably have an 8.5 average score.
For everyone who says Gears 2 will be GOTY, well, it's possible. It's deffinately possible, but I don't think it's probable. The only reason Gears of War won so many Game of the Year awards was, let's face it, because of its technically prolific graphics. Gears looked better than every other game when it first came out. Yes it had outstanding gameplay, but the real hook was the graphics. While the sequel is really shaping up to be a visual treat, it's basically displaying the standard look of any AAA title nowadays. The one thing Gears 2 needs to nab GOTY this year is a killer story. So, like I said it's possible, but I honestly don't see Epic delivering on this fantastic story they're promising. And with games like GTAIV, MGS4, and (presumably Fallout 3), story is a huge factor.
Of course, I'll reiterate what I said in my previous post, at this point it's impossible to determine GOTY while we're on the cusp of this explosion of big games, but there are certain games at this point that are deffinately in contention despite what gamers want, and certain games that have less chance than some people hope. I guess we'll see. I'm still thinking Fallout 3 though. Just a few more months and we'll have most of the best games released, then we'll have a better idea.

I'm so sick of these GOTY topics. The year isn't even over yet and there are more games coming out. As for people voting for games that haven't even come out yet, that's just dumb because the game might, despite the hype, not live up to expectations. beutlich99
Yup, Army of Two was not even close to as good as the hype it had.
I have a feeling fable it is going to be flop.
