Has anyone else noticed the Games on Demand effect on trade in values (specifically Gamestop)?

Trade in values for games that have sold well like Assassin's Creed, BFBC, Civ Rev, Dirt and Army of Two have all gone UP since being on Games on Demand with several games including Mass Effect staying the same. Several more games have lost trade in value far slower than the average game not on the Games on Demand list.

I agree, but my point is that digital copies on LIVE are already having an effect on the used game sector. Most people didn't think Games on Demand would have any real effect on the games industry at all this generation. Four months after it's launch they are wrong.

So, 20 years down the road what is going to happen to all your games on demand if the HDD corrupts?

Only those indestructible 8-bit cartridges could last that long.

Worrying about playing a game I owned 20 years ago isn't going to matter to me in the slightest. I always buy DD before hard copies...

Exactly

How many disc copies do you get? 1

How many times can you download your digital download? Forever

Digital downloads are far superior to disc based games

One day soon we'll be able to live in a world where we wont even have to deal with discs and those who choose that way will have to pay a premium to do so

The only reason I still buy the discs is the price is the same as Games on Demand and when I'm finished I can trade it in if I want. They would be smart to price the Games on Demand between used prices and new hard copies. Then I would be more inclined to purchase digital copies like it is for PCs.

Well that's the problem it's trying to eliminate

Digital distribution is going to kill off the used game sales and when that happens we'll be able to have gaming rise to a whole new level.

The problem with lowering the price is that you show digital distributed software as somehow of a lower quality compared to it's disc based brethren when it's superior in every aspect.

The main thing is to make it match retail prices of games which it does about 50/50 right now. When it becomes more advanced we'll see digital distribution react to sales like the way Amazon and WalMart have been able to react this holiday season.

What's so superior about a disc based game vs. a digital copy if digital copy is cheaper?

I disagree... not dealing with discs is fantastic.

I hope you love the game and plan on playing it forever. Some games are only one play through games for maybe a year or 2. I don't feel like spending $30 or $20 on a game like that when i could easily find it $10 or $15 somewhere else. Plus there are those rare titles that sell for 2x more than when released. Digital games are nice... if they are cheaper.

These games are not though at all.....

EDIT: Who is to say you will have these games on the next Xbox? I know many people are fond of selling consoles when a new one comes out and if you were to do that then you would lose massive amounts of money compared to disc version. All i can say is i hope you're ready for the digital age because when it happens prepare to spend way more than you would ever have with physical copies.

well... frankly, used games are very harmful to the industry. I would like to maybe spend a little extra and ensure the survival of my hobby for a long time to come. I can't wait until the days of physical media is gone for good... I am always sure to vote with my wallet.

That's one of the biggest scare tactics going to stop digital distribution

The fact is this. Right now the thing that costs gamers the most is that games can be turned in to places like Gamestop

Gaming is the only field of entertainment that allows it's users to make money off it's wares. You can go right into a store and buy a game then sell it to someone when you're done with it. You get to make money once you're done with the experience.

What happens if you try that for a movie in the theater? Oh that's right you can't, unless you tape the movie and then sell it and then the police arrest you and the lawyers from Warner Brothers makes sure you never do it again.

The ability to sell games once played is killing the game industry and raising prices for everyone. No one knows how many units a game has ever sold. People are upset about game prices? Well then look at every single person who sells their games and buys them used. That being done gives the gaming industry the need to guess on all of it's sales.

If the entire gaming industry went to digital distribution then companies would have solid numbers for how much a game brought in compared to how much it costs to make.

People always try the scare tactics of "well if they only have digital distribution all prices will rise"

False

If all the numbers are solid then they CAN'T overcharge because anyone would be able to see they're doing it. The way the industry is today with selling back games all companies can fudge their numbers because most of it is a guessed projection "we think it'll sell this many in the first week" and then "we think this many users will buy it second hand"

Reselling games is what's holding back gaming from being on a whole new level when it comes to entertainment. Digital distribution will stop that

The only way digital distribution is going to happen for good is when every single person has internet. Until then...it won't happen because they will be losing the valuable customers who don't have it. Discs or whatever the new thing may be for a version of a hard copy will always be there.

For most new PC games you can buy a hard copy for $50 and a digital copy for $40. I like that but what I can't understand is why hard copies and digital copies are the same price for the Xbox 360.

not really... the holdouts will need to adapt, saying it won't happen because some people don't have the internet is just ridiculous... Internet is almost ubiquitous at this point. I would guess that the number of gamers without an internet connection is quite low anyway.

I actually don't know which I prefer over, Digital or Hard Copy... Both have their ups and downs like: Not being able to sell once done with Could be overpriced Or: Could scratch and break Could LOSE

I would hope that with digital downloads you could download a trial version first, just like you can with XBLA titles, so you can get an idea of the game you're about to purchase.

I agree. Digital copies are more convenient, but I always try to have a hard copy, even if I have a digital copy, for collector's purposes. That's the same reason I don't care if trade in values are dropping. I don't trade in games, I keep them for my collection

I just like having hard copies because I love having the case and booklet and such. However, Digital Downloaded Games are better imo because they can't be scratched and you really can't lose them since they are stored on your gamertag profile if your HDD gets corrupt
