Games these days...how most of them today are not as fun as the older generations. I mean it seems games today are based solely around making money and not for the gamer. I mean I feel like in the Genesis/SNES era, back then it was like the developers made games solely for making a fun game. It seems like nobody cares anymore. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe then I was too young to understand economics? I'm not sure...anybody else feel this way?

That is excatly it. Video games are now just money makers for the general public. Us Hardcore gammers got the shaft in this. Some games are still fun, but ive been seeing more terrible games these last few years, Bullet witch ring any bells?

Exactly, they also made things better that would last much longer too.
I guess the gaming industy is too much into money now and not the customers. :(

Its quite sad.

Take NBA Jam for example. Remember how it was just a two man team just ridiculous dunks, jumping like 20 feet in the air and doing crazy tricks while doing so? That's probably my fav. basketball game of all time to this day because of that. I wish game developers these days didn't take better graphics so seriously and go with the realism route. If that game was remade with the exact same style it was before with Forza 2 graphics, it would be amazing.

But then again, if developers really did that, they would be like..."We don't really want to be like Nintendo." blah blah blah

I think it depends on who you talk about. I think the developers are actually trying to make the game as fun as possible, but the publisher is all about money. And since they are pretty much funding the project they kind of have more say in the project. Release date, amount of people who work on the project, and amount of funds.

I mean look at Blizzard. Yes they are with what Vivendi or whatever, but they have been self publishing games for years. Their quality today is still as good as it was ten years ago. World of Warcraft was truly amazing in my eyes (i am just to cheap for $15 a month). You also look at Betheseda. I played Oblivion for about 200 hours (yes 200 hours......... ruffly). I know not everyone played it like that, but i know many did. The problem now-a-days is that many publishers want to cash in on games. Take Activision for example. Infinity War made Call of Duty and it was really good, but then they decided to get Treyarch invovled (mabye Treyarch voluntered who knows) and they have been making not as good as previous Call of Duty titles yet Activision just keeps letting them pump out their games.

Publishers are greedy in my eyes... you know EA, Ubisoft (even though i do like many of their games... i see them as the much much better EA that can actually make good games that are in house), Activision, and others. They pump out a title year after year which is pretty much the exact same games with slight improvements (Any EA sport franchise, Guitar Hero, and Tom Clancy games like R:6 or GR with their main title and expansion for each game....).

Look at movie games for example. Is it the developers fault the game sucks? Not really... The Publishers who get their hands on the IP give the developer a small amount of funds and short development times so they can cash in on it without spending almost anything.

I really put about 90% of the blame on the publishers now a days. The Developers are trying to make the games as fun as possible, but when you don't get crap from the people funding the project it is hard to do it.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'll agree to that. But hey, the developers are the lifeblood of the gaming industry. Without them, theres no publishers. In that case, they should go on strike and strike better agreements and produce better games. If I was a developer, I would.

Games are becoming more and more like the movie industry. There are a lot of games out there like movies, which means lower quality like movies. Then once and awhile a great game will come along just like a movie. The driving force is money. Why would a little known company go to great lengths to make a great game when they can cut corners and still clear profits.

That's crap. Video game makers were making games for profit back with Genesis too. Why would they word so hard on a product that wasn't going to make money? They might not have made as much money as games do today, but they definitely did it for money.

Mr Oblivio did say they were for fun but do not take it so literally. His meaning is back then there was a purity in games, not just money.

Well yeah, I know that. I'd do it for money too. I'm just saying it's more corrupt. Why can't there be a developer and publisher out working together to do for the gaming industry what Dave Matthews does for the music industry?

There are still quality games coming out every year, it's just very expensive to develop and a lot of companies just focus on the money and don't want to take any risks by putting in a lot of effort into a game and having it flop on them.

i think back in the day we were KIDS, and that had a lot to do with it. our imaginations ran rampant and a game didnt have to be phenomenal to be fun. but on the other hand i agree that its a lot to do with $$. thats why you get the hannah montana games and the 38 pokemon sequels.

It always has been and always will be about the money. Like it or not, gaming companies are after the same goals as Wal Mart, Starbucks, Exxon, etc. That universal business goal is the $$$$$. What has made games worse though is that there is SO MUCH excess power in the game systems and their respective programming tools for game production. Programmers today don't have to worry near as much if the game will fit on a ROM cart or how they are going to execute a complex programming routine. Programmers have become lazy! The same goes with writers and designers. Hey, with all of these high-tech "wiz-bang" graphics and sounds, why worry about actually writing a good story or have a cutting edge game design. Now, there are always exceptions to the rules but all of these current practices are the RULE and not the exception.

Apparently neither is my right to freedom of speech. Seriously though, am I the only one who would rather play GTA4 than Super Mario Brothers?

Agent_Kaliaver, I never really thought of it that way but that makes perfect sense. Great post.
