'fraid not. it was a good game and all, but I think Gears 2 should have gotten it :P gears 2 was good. but no where nears GOTY good. MGS4 should've gotten it hands down
While I'm blown away by gears 2. I agree that GTA IV won GOTY it has evrything a gamer wants. Driving, shooting, mini games its non linear has multiplayer,Co-op, excellent story with comedy and drama and great graphics. GTA does everything and it does it well thats why it deserves GOTY.
I think GTA4 gets a lot of false hype simply because it is another quality installment in an awesome series. If it wasn;t called GTA it would have gotten a 9.0 from GS and would not be GOTY by VGA. It was a great game, but where is the innovation for the series? In my opinion Fallout 3 is a good choice because of the combat system and awesome world that Bethesda created. I haven't played MGS4 but from what I've heard it is a spectaular achievement that should be recognized. Gears 2 could also be a legitimate candidate, but the slow online matchmaking kind of hurts it since that is such an integral part of the game.
Overall, 2008 has been a great year for games, but I don't think there is a clear winner out of them all. I do know that GTA 4 is overhyped.
GTA IV deserves it so i'm glad it won, it has great graphics, great gameplay, really good multiplayer, and a great story. I was hoping that or MGS4 was gonna win
MGS4 should have won, IMO. Also I really don't think Spike TV is the most respectable game critics so we can wait for IGN, EGM, GS, Kotaku, etc.iloverikku11
VGA is a joke, it was all really bad annoucements except for fight night. Most of the awards were given informally and inconjunction with presenting another. The ALL AMERICAN REJECTS are terrible. PC games were poorly represented.

I agree with the PC part. I felt like they awarded the awards horribly in general. Brutal Legends looked awesome though!
GTA4 was worse than San Andreas , the gameplay was very normal nothin special about it and the radio sucked big gorilla d i c k , its far far away from GOTY , if theres a game to get GOTY it would've been MGS4 or FO3
Oh yeah the announcements definately WERE HORRIBLE. I thought what happened with Neil Patrick Harris was a flippin joke, until 15 seconds later he's still standing there like "wtf do I say", and the generic female game announcer thing said the winners name. Also Busta Rhymes was like "best engine..sorry..system.game...."
Also I loved how 50 cent was there just cause his new game coming out. Who the hell bought the first one anyways? I think I want to go see a review for that game haha
my special edition got a lot more special... the DLC trailer was a plus, can't wait... I don't see what's so big about Fallout 3, but then again I couldn't get into Elder Scrolls... im not a big RPG guy... MGS4 was phenominal but I didnt' want to get a P$3 for one game... It was either GTA IV or MGS4 for GOTY accept no substitues... i'm just happy the game I own won... as for Megan Fox, she's overrated... I love me some Selma Hayek n' Rosario Dawson(used to like Scarlett Johannson but ehhh)
