I normally wouldn't make a thread like this, but wow! I've played both Battlefield 1943 both Gears of War 2, which have excellent multiplayer. but I played Halo 3 online today and there was NO LAG whatsoever! most games I play can seriously suffer from lag! but I have to say, it was the best online experience I've ever had :D

Yeah, but it seems to me that Halo has more lag than others. GoW2 matchmaking is horrid. But most of the time Halo 3 doesn't have much lag.

I would say the other way around, and with how much complaining I'm hearing about ODST's non-matchmaking firefight, coop, and lag, makes me wonder why a game this big doesn't run dedicated servers.

Not sure what to say about this. My friend let me borrow Halo 3 for the weekend, but I have yet to obtain Xbox Live, so...

I almost always have had the best luck on the Battlefield servers, followed by CoD, Halo = Gears. That's just an average though, I have had that list completely switch up. It really just depends who's the host of your game.

It's ok. The games that hold up after lag that I have noticed are: Call of Duty and Halo. Halo died once it really kicked in, but CoD didn't.

WTF Did you just say? If you mean Halo is dead that is far from the truth.. near 300,000 ppl online at Halo3 at a time, only around 100k for the 2 CoD games..

and I agree that Bungie supports there games very well.. The best matchmaking system imo..

It's a great multiplayer with awesome features like forge and sharing maps but... Buying every map pack to play a ranked match? That is the biggest rip-off ever. I feel even more ripped-off since I DID buy every pack and now ODST comes waltzing in with everything already there.

Its usually good, as long as your end is stable. My friend has an open router that is like the most standard model with probably 3 people leeching off his internet. As a result he frequently gets horrible lag while playing Halo 3. Mine is usually fine.

Halo does still get laggy, you've obviously had a hosts each time with a good connection and broadband speed. When it gets to a bad host, that's when it gets really annoying.

Ive been playing H3 since launch and cant remember one match where ive lagged. But host's usually have an advantage though...

Ive lagged in Firefight a few times because the host was trying to download some things while host a match. And yea, the only way to play firefight is to join a friend's game, but thats not too bad because why would you want to play firefight with complete strangers?

This happend to me too. Awhile ago Ire-bought a copy of Halo 3 after my other one broke, and than i go online hoping to play some Live, and i find out i have to buy all the map packs just to play the friggen game online. So i did thinking it would be worth it, and around 2 days later i find out ODST will be coming out and will have all the mapacks plus more. I was so mad and that is the sole reason why i didn't buy ODST.

and has been on average since release in 2007, even before odst it was still ahead of every other game online i never really get lag with halo, maybe once in a while but nothing that happens in consecutitve games, just general lag, every game has to lag at some point when its online and halos normally very reliable for me when i play swat or rumble pit or lone wolves or double xp but when i played odst on firefight, they were times when it lagged out and the game literally went into slow motion for several seconds, it actually helped me do well in the game, but the way it happened for me and my brother made me think it was more the game engine lagging out (maybe too many enemies in fire fight perhaps?) rather than the network causing any problems. but maybe im wrong. my bro's house could of had something downloading at the time as they are several computers and xboxes in their house online

yeah that wasnt cool about the map packs becoming needed to play certain play lists, that are standard with the game, i have no problem though with me buying the legendary and mythic (thru halo bores) and then replicating them thru odst. as i wanted the packs at first opertunity so it was a good buy for me and ive had my moneys worth. and i for one have never been exludeded where i have to buy a pack to play my fave playlists. but i dont think its right. call of duty i never bought any map packs and i wudnt be happy if i cudnt play headquaters or another playlist without them. it was a bum move i think. i might not of been directly effected by it, but i reckon i have in some ways as some peopel cudnt play team swat with me , cod shows its easy enough to let people play with or without maps on the play lists, if people dont have them then dont include them maps in the rota. if everyone does then party on. and just match make you with people who have the maps if all ur party has them. but guess odst will pretty much level that playing field with the dlc, but it was still a bum move

My internet was actually broken for about 2 months and I would play Halo and it would lag bad. I would play CoD and it only lagged if I stayed long enough to become host.

Halo 3 definitely has great servers. As far the greatest, I'm not sure. Call of Duty 4 almost never has connection issues, and I'm sure there are other games like that as well. There is no denying that developers at Bungie know what they're doing, though.

Yea, Halo 3 definitely didn't die after it's release. I wouldn't be shocked if it retains the top spot on LIVE even after MW2 comes out.

You guys ready for this, because I have the answer right here. Call of Duty (WaW and 4) have the best online matchmaking. Reason. Well in Halo, Gears, etc, when somebody leaves, nobody else can get in. You are either stuck playing a man down the rest of the map or get a bot that does predictable stuff. Another reason, Halo 3 forces you to buy the map packs, its not really tailored to people who just occasionally play it. When MW2 comes out, it is going to beat them all because in MW2 if the host leaves, then it pauses the game, selects a new host, and then play resumes.

Truth is Bungie developers really don't have any idea what the hell they are doing. If they did have an idea, then they would not have taken out the pistol with the scope and 3 shots to the dome. Now the best they got is the br, but I have to shoot a guy 5 times in the head before he dies? GTFO? Halo 3 is garbage, and the only reason why so many people play it is because they jump on the bandwagon. I played Halo 3 and got to a lv 50 general. Then COD4 came out and I realized that this was a much better game, so I switched. There are more inconsistencies with Halo 3 than you can shake a stick at. Why is the shielding in the back so weak? Why If I melee someone to the back they die instantly, but if I shoot them they don't? Why is the shielding in the head so weak? Why if I snipe you in the head you die, but if I shoot you in the chest, you live to take another round? Why is there a spiky grenade when a plasma does the same job better? All these inconsistencies and halo jumping make this game garbage. Look at me hopping around looking like an idiot instead of taking cover, this does not in any way look realistic and the bad thing is that people who did that in halo bring that crap into COD4 and actually think it helps, but what they fail to realize is that they are not a spartan, jumping 10 feet into the air over somebody's head. That is the only way it would be effective.

It's great, but matchmaking is terribly slow. I mean loading a map for it to then be vetoed? Doesn't make sense. I hope they fix these problems for Halo Reach matchmaking.

I never looked at the shielding that way, good point, when you think about it the shields seem to have a greater magnitude around the torso and legs but not the back and head which really does not make any sense.

Even the most basic routers have security measures. Your friend should look in the manual or Google "how to secure a wireless network".

I realize that, but it had been set up by the ISP company already and there is no CD/Manual or anything with it. But regardless, the basic router he has is terrible and would probably lag even if it were secured. Theres no comparing a high bandwith router to a crappy standard one when you have multiple devices on your wireless network, like 3 computers, an iphone, and 1-2 video game consoles.
