half life is another overhyped game to man...seriously...i wanna shoot stuff not solve puzzles...pretty much bored the livnin H311 outta me halo is good but not great...the thing thats groundbreakin about is the unique vehicles the armor suit the story before it got ruined in pt. 3 and the crazy weapons...otherwise its just another good game...not horrible not amazing...DaKidLiLJ

if you want to talk about crazy weapons how about you play Turok Seeds of Evil. A gun that shoots a drill that bores in your enemies brain then explodes. Flame thrower (which you didnt even see until Halo 3), Bow with arrows that explode and screw vechicles, who need them when you have dinosaurs.

You know what one thing that gets me going more than anything is when Xbox 360 players say that Halo 3 is the best first-person shooter ever made. I have to say you guys are crazy first off, you have to be completely ignorant of the very history of the first-person shooter. Just because it was made for an Xbox does not make it the best first-person shooter ever. So I'm going to teach you guys a little bit on why Halo 3 sucks, how it's not an original game, and how there isn't anything special about Halo 3. It's just a carbon copy of the normal first-person shooter games. So first off, just to show you exactly how ignorant you are, let's start at the beginning,

Roots

The very first, really big first-person shooter was Wolfenstein 3D. If you want to talk about groundbreaking then Wolfenstein 3D was definitely the most groundbreaking of the first-person shooters. It is literally in the grandpa of the first-person shooter genre, what's Awesome is the fact that IDSoft couldn't leave this stuff alone, so the very following year they brought out Doom.

These two are the games that literally the entire industry is now built upon. Without these key games the industry would have gone nowhere, but we also wouldn't have to put up with the cheap imitations like Halo 3.

True 3-D

Now, if you think about it, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom really weren't 3D games. The next really big game that was released, also by IDSoft, was Duke Nukem 3D. Again not really a 3D game, it used a lot of 2D tricks to give it the appearance of being a 3D game, but we really didn't get a true 3D game until Quake came along.

This was way beyond what we had ever experienced before and it was so cool! Quake was built off of polygon graphics, not 2D sprites. You could literally look at all sides of an enemy. The other beautiful thing about Quake is that IDSoft actually encouraged user made modifications, where a user could come in at any given point in time and change how the game reacted, or add new maps.(I don't see Halo 3 being able to do that!)

Now I know you're probably thinking that it was a first when it came to console games. Again that's just not true.

If we want to talk about a console game that truly broke ground in the genre, as far as the first-person shooter is concerned, you better start looking towards Nintendo and for a game called Goldeneye 007. Sure is a game that truly gives you the multiplayer ability that the consoles have, but again the PC has always had better first-person shooters.

In 1998 Sierra released, what in my opinion, was the best first-person shooter at the time. It was definitely groundbreaking, and they made a truly spectacular game. That title was called Half Life. If you want to talk about where Halo 3 has gotten all of its ideas! In Half-Life, one of the creatures is called head crabs, which coincidently looks almost exactly like what the flood looks like in Halo. Copy Cats! They couldn't even come up with an original design!

If you don't believe me just go pick up the High-Resolution pack of Half-Life. You will see that this is a game that has been around long, long before Halo ever thought of being made. And almost all of the ideas that Bungee got for their game came almost directly from Half-Life. Almost all of the content of Halo has was ripped almost completely out of Half-Life.

Conclusion

Just saying in conclusion, Halo fan boys, do not bother to claim your sub-par game is the best game in the world, it just shows how truly ignorant you are. The story, the graphics and the game play are absolutely nothing new. So before you start getting on my case about what I've said, I hope that you do your homework, and don't come to with me with irrational claims. The simple fact is that Halo doesn't do anything new and doesn't advance the genre at all.

Halo would be nothing without its predecessors, and proper respect should be paid to them. So all you Fan boys out there, do your home work, and realize that Halo is not the end all, be all, of first-person shooters. There are many, much better games out there.

Don't believe me? Go play Half-Life 2 because that is a game that is truly amazing and is really pushing the limits . One that has earned more than 40 Game of the Year Awards, and is a true groundbreaker and a leader in the industry.

Half Life is great except for the fact that it doesnt have split screen. And if you want to know who is a copy cat, head crabs are a direct copy of aliens duh, they are even called the same thing head crabs. Also Barny was a copy of the cop on the andy griffin show. The whole story about black mesa is a direct rippoff of a book written in the 1970's about an incident at a military science facility in New Mexico by which durring the creation of a fusion reactor a portal was opened to an alternate dimension allowing a psychicly enslaved alien race to be unleashed apon this earth.

Halo isnt great because it reinvented the FPS genre (even though it did in many places). Halo is great because it did everything old FPS's did but better. Just look at Half-lifes completely unballenced online.

Every game you listed you said was groundbreaking. Half Life was a piece of garbage. But I do agree. In Half Life 2 there are these robots that fly around and blind you that look exactly like the little robot you turn into when you're doing forge. Also the drop ships are identical.

I have never liked Halo. The only thing I enjoy about it is multiplayer with my friends.

The Sandlions look remarkably similar to the aliens in Starship Troopers. Half-Life is a total sack of **** because it steals every element of the game from something else.

Personally I think Halo and Half Life are brilliant games, but Halo: CE to me is the best FPS of all time (with Half Life 2 being a close second). It did everything incredibly well. The flood may have been similiar to headcrabs which are similar to other games (didn't Alien vs Predator on the Jaguar have headcrab-like creatures?), but I never jumped as much from a game when the flood first arrive with hundreds of those buggers flowing into the room. I personally don't care if users can contribute maps/content as long as the core game is great. I agree that Halo 2 and Halo 3 weren't the greatest but that is up for debate.

Doom and Wolfenstein 3d were great in their time (I played them both to death) but they have very little to do with this argument. A genre has to start somewhere. If Id Software didn't do it someone would have. There were actually hints of first person shooters before Wolfenstein 3D. See the Eidolon from Lucas Arts in the mid 80s.

Like other people have said- almost no first person shooter has been original. They've almost all borrowed from previous games/movies/books/tv etc.

oh and to add, i don't think halo 3 is that great... campaign missed the epic battle hype like bungie claimed and mp maps suck compared to the other 2. (where's all the close quarter battles/indoors???) (yea, i know theres a couple but we need more) As much as i was hardcore about the first 2 halos, i prefer cod4 over h3.

but for most the points u made, they can be said about any fps... i mean, ur just arguing that it took a lot from other games... well hell yea it did... it took the best parts of other games and combined them... thats the same strategy strived for in all good fps... the halo series also popularized a couple different things for fps -- dual weapons and no health/rechargeable shield... also - dual weapons that are independently controlled... (i remember playing area 51 (not blacksite) on xbox and the dual weapons were still like having one gun that was more powerful).. also, it introduced a file share system and the ability to save, replay, and edit the games you play

my point is, that you can bash h3 all you want, because it's your opinion. but at least give reasonable, valid arguments to your statements

I haven't really heard many people say they thought Halo 3 was the first person shooter on a console or in general for that matter. It'd be stupid to do so, but I think the Halo series changed the already exisiting FPS genre in that it introduced ideas never seen before.

Now I'm not a Halo fan boy and I certainly don't think Halo 3 is the best FPS of all time, but I wouldn't doubt it was a good game, like you suggested here. (saying it flat out sucked) :?

This is all opinion, and you're bringing your assessment that older games are inherently better than modern games like Halo 3 because they were the first. Well, OK. But look at the MMO genre; WoW brought nothing new to the table - only, and I use this word lightly, 'perfected' many features of the MMO. Now its the largest MMO of all time.

Halo 2 brought [good] online FPS play to the Xbox. It brought nearly a million people to the before-then 500,000 live subscription base. At the time, most Live players didn't have much of an option that PC gamers did, and even currently the top two FPS games Live subscripters play is the Halo series and COD4. Thus, perhaps when live players state such a thing that Halo is the greatest FPS of all time it's understandable from their eyes; not neccesarily right, but understandable. However, I absolutely hate the fact that so many people judge this game on their inability to explore everything about it.

Thus I doubt this thread would've even been created had the Halo series been solely made for the computer.

So who cares if anyone - Live players or not - think that H3 is the greatest FPS. It's all opinion. However, I can prove to you as to why Halo (in at least online play) is a good FPS having played h2 and h3 online now for over two and a half years.

So here's my opinion:

First off, anyone who has put enough time into the game knows that as you become better, there are always new things to learn. There are hundreds of different possibilities in killing your opponent at any one point in time, and skill along with constant teamwork, adapting to any situation, using the map in your favor, and being able to think on your feet aren't neccesarily new to the FPS genre, but Bungie's usage of such and appliance to the Halo gameplay set this game off in my opinion apart from other FPS's.

These are general terms that more or less basically apply to the majority of FPS's out there, but unlike COD4 or the majority of FPS games, for the most part in Halo you have every chance of killing that other guy should he attack you or see you first. Of course in reality it depends on weapon usage, thus the reason for knowing what spawns where and, should said guy out-range you with his weapon, the option of outsmarting him by running, nades, power-ups, etc. are always there. And hell, in the end its your fault that you died because you didn't pick up said weapons, nades, didn't work as a team, etc.. Basically you have a great number of options - in games such as COD4, 1) guy sees you 2) guy scopes 3) guy kills.

Moreover, the map you're playing immensely determines your style of play. Some maps require great nade placement, others BR skill, and some maps need your team to control snipe spawns or power weapons.

Overall Halo has a basic premise: a chaotic environment that needs to be controlled. To counter and reduce your opponent's diverse options in being able to hurt or kill you, map control equals a win. Meaning control over weapon spawns, high-traffic areas of the map, and skill that follows control of your weapons. Such control relies on your team's ability to work together. Moreover its how well your team can adapt as a whole to what the other team does whether it be rushing, holding off another portion of the map, or relying on their snipe spawn to take over your team's controlled area and thus the entire map. Teamwork is vital in higher ranks (at least 45+ in hardcore, possibly slayer), and in my opinion is why I've kept playing Halo online.

At the higher ranks, everything you do in Halo matters. Your very position on the map during every second of the game, knowing when and where to look at even a fraction of a second, knowing and using the map to your advantage, and adapting to the other team's actions. Mastering such and winning a match because of it has been more gratifying than any other modern FPS I've played.

But again, most of what I've stated isn't new to the FPS genre, but I do believe Halo's great success derives from its gratifying gameplay, equality at the start of a game (no 'classes' such as snipes, etc.), and longevity.
