Ok, so I got my xbox about a year ago now... and i have it plugged into my tv using the component cables and 2 audio cables. now i thought that using the component cables meant that I was playing in HDMI or whatever but now someone told me that the new xbox's come with a HDMI cable. can someone please explain to me what the difference is?? Sorry if i'm asking a really stupid questionmattwilson13the newxbox 360 is built with HDMI ports which has better and nicer graphics when you play or browse around the dashboard.
what? so it all goes through the one cable?? if so, how am i supposed to play my sound through my surround sound system (my tv doesnt have an audio output)?? is it even possible?? also, is there even that much of a difference between the 2?? thanksmattwilson13
You can have Dobly Surround with an Optical Audio Cable, an the main diffeerence is,
HDMI=Digital
Component=Analog
nothing relevant rly
if i buy a Optical Audio Cable, will I be able to use it with my xbox?? or is it only compatible with the newer ones?? if i can use it... where exactly do i plug it in?? sorry, i know these must be stupid questions but i just dont have a clue when it comes to this sort of stuff :(
oh i see. so do i have to get an optical cable that's specifically for 360's?? or will any one plug into it?? also... once i have that plugged into my surround sound, is that all i plug into it? or do i plug in the red and white ones as well??
thanks for your help
nope you dont need the red and whites because the optical cable replaces them for superior audio, and any old optical cable will do, i bought my optical cable from my local electronics storeoh i see. so do i have to get an optical cable that's specifically for 360's?? or will any one plug into it?? also... once i have that plugged into my surround sound, is that all i plug into it? or do i plug in the red and white ones as well??

The majority of people won't be able to tell the difference between PCM and Dolby Digital, much the same as most people won't be able to tell the difference between HDMI and Component.
I'm not saying that HDMI isn't better, but that the difference isn't really all the noticeable at all.
I have an old xbox(no hdmi) and a 1080p tv, is there any way to get a 1080p output from the xbox? vga cables maybe?
Anyone who claims there isn't that big of a difference between HDMI and component must not be able to truly utilize it because if you have everything ( 1080p tv, hd receiver etc) and compare the two the difference is VERY noticeable. Listen to pcm ( uncompressed ) Audio and the Dolby digital ( the highest component will give you ) and tell me you can't here a difference. Also the graphics are much crisper and cleaner because theres hardly any signal loss in a true digital connection like HDMI where as in a analog connection you do have some signal loss.....so to sum it all up if you have a high def setup then DEFINITELY go with the HDMI but if you don't then the component will suffice!Pizentios
No offense dude but you sound like a commercial. Yes HDMI has better quality picture, but if the TC's TV isn't 1080p and he's going to use the optical audio anyway then his benefits for going with HDMI are minimal.
You can get 1080p with VGA or compnent. IF your TV supports it.Radiozo
The Xbox 360 cannot output 1080p over component cables. I'm not saying 1080p isn't possible with component, but I am saying the Xbox can't do it. VGA and HDMI are you're only ways to go for 1080p.
