Help a newb with Fallout 3?

I rented Fallout 3 a couple of days ago and I'm just unbelievably overwhelmed. So overwhelmed that I'm scared to continue playing it (I'm at the part where you have to go to Galaxy Radio). I've never felt like this about a game before. I have a couple of questions I was hoping you can answer:

1) How do I increase my skills? For example, sneaking, repairing, etc?

2) When I exit Vault 101, should I start the main quests, or do you recommend doing all of the side quests in the game first to level up?

4) What do you suggest I should do to keep from being so overwhelmed?

I really hope you answer my questions. Fallout 3 seems like it's a very interesting place, and it's waiting for me to explore. I just don't know how, if that makes any sense. Thanks.

Yeah, you can increase your skills by leveling up and also finding books and bobbleheads.

As for quests, it's up to you. I personally did all of the major side quests before I even started the main quest. Just a word of advice: save the game before the last main quest because once you beat the game you can't do anything else. Keep multiple save files, and save often. Try not to get overwhelmed either. Just reach Megaton and there should be a few quests/missions there to accomplish. Once you start on your quests the game will really pick up.

1: - You get skill when you do something. I.E complete a mission, kill something, pick a lock, hack a computer, pretty much anything. Once you have enough experience you will be taken into a level up screen that lets you increase your skills. 2: - Do whatever you want I completed most of the side quests before I even looked at the main quests, but that was just my choice. 3: - Just jump into the game, it may look like alot is stretched out infront of you but the just get going and you wont be so overwhelmedStrap_happy

Yeah, when I started the game I was like, "Holy Sh*t! This game is massive!" I didn't know where to start. Should I got left, right, or to the bridge I see behind the hills.

In order to keep yourself from being overwhelmed, I'd like most of the replies, try sticking to a area and exploring it... and if you encounter something you can't possibly beat... run! :D Also i'd recommed being somewhat skilled with small guns to begin with :)

I will probably have to start fresh. When I was in Valut 101, I spread all of the skill points equeally, which I hear isn't a good idea. I think I'm better off if I start from the begining.

Do everything everyone has been tellingyou,and when you're able to pick the fortune finder perk (Level 6 I believe and with 5 or 6 pts in the Luck skill) TAKE IT! You'll find boatloads more Caps and that will help you alot on your voyage through "post apocalyptia"!
