70 dallors for a new game its hard enough to get a game system which is my gaol by the end of this year but to get a game or even a couple your looking at a huge price tag i remember the day that a new game was roughly $40, it sickens me all this crap sickens me, and i remember when this started call of duty modern warfare was the first $70 game i ever bought.

seriously at these prices how can anyone game now its almost impossible for me.

i thought i would bring this thread back to life now that i have seen more people becoming feed up about the prices and now want your opinion

When someone loves something they'll be willing to spend any amount of money on it, no matter the costs in the long run. I remember buying my Elite and then having to hold out on a few weeks of Rent, almost got kicked out. It's just that mindset that developers attack, and I can't really help it, nor do I think most people can for that matter.

Of course they'll pretend they can resist things, but after a while, everyone ends up buying a good game. No matter what.

Every new game I buy is 60 dollars.

I agree though games are pretty expensive, but I usually just wait a few months for the price to drop. Unless it is a title you almost have to buy at launch.

Do what I do:

1) Hold off on buying the console until a few years into its life cycle (actually, I bought my 360 pretty much when it came out but it RRoD'd on me and I've been holding off on getting a replacement until the elite falls to $350). Wait until all the technical issues get hammered out and a couple price drops come and go, then get your much more reliable system on the cheap.

2) At this point, there should already be a significant library of games out for your console. All the games that you wanted to play at launch should now be sitting in the bargain bin, going for a nice $19.99 or $29.99, or even cheaper (do NOT go and get the newest games or this just defeats the purpose and you won't save any money).

3) Just keep moving through the library chronologically. That way, you work through all the games you wanted play, and you never have to pay full price, and by the time you're done with those games, you'll have a whole new set of games waiting for you in the bargain bin. Of course, you can make the odd exception for a game you truly love, like if you're a Halo fan and ODST launches, or if you're into sports and a new FIFA or Madden game comes out, then you can make an exception and get those when they launch.

Of course, if you're one of those people who absolutely NEEDS to play games while there is still hype and buzz surrounding it, then this will not work for you. But if you don't mind holding off on a game for a year or so, you'll save a ton of money this way. Besides, a quality game is a quality game whether you play it at launch or not.

Haha ok true true. My solution is shopping online for games. I've bought the majority of my games in the past 8 months or so online. As a result, I haven't paid more than 50 dollars for a game in about 8 months. And that's after shipping costs (and there's usually no tax online). Amazon.com and the Cheapassgamer forums are lifesavers :)

I never buy games these days..Of course im a stay at home dad these days too...I use to buy a game every month at least..if not 2 or 3. BUT...even if I was still working, I wouldnt buy more games for my 360 as its junk and dont wanna play discs hardly. But its ok...its only my 4th 360 so its all acceptable..not..

Im not real sure if im going to continue following games after this gen as I dont want to have to spend tons of money for a game PLUS have to buy extra content...PLUS I dont want to follow digital distabution...I just dont want it right now..

weren't super nintendo games around $50 "back in the day"?

Just be a smart shopper. Do you research before buying a game, and don't spend money you don't have. :D

The price of gaming really hasn't moved in the past 25 years. I still remember paying $60 for Mortal Kombat on the Genesis in 1993. Not much else has stayed the same price over that much time. We should be glad that games are still only $59.99 and have not increased over the years.

This ^ I remember back in the snes/genesis days games here in Australia cost anywhere from $90-$119.95, with most being priced at $99.95 or $109.95. These are still the same RRP you get for console games these days. Luckily there's a lot more choice in retailers nowadays, so you can shop around and find them for $20-$50 cheaper, depending on where you buy them. So they haven't really changed much in a long time. Most new release PS3/Xbox 360 titles can be bought for $79/$89 on release from local retailers these days, so they've kind of gotten cheaper here, in a way. You're still getting them cheaper than us though, so quit your whinging. No one is going to starve to buy the latest console game. If you can't afford them, then take some of the suggestions that have already been made, like holding off until a price drop, or buying used a few weeks after release etc.

I remember reading EXACTLY where the $60 goes to. It gets spread out to all aspects. Like $9 a copy goes to the development studio, $12 a copy goes to the publisher, $6 a copy goes to marketing, etc. You're viewing it like all $60 goes to one place. If a game is sold for under $60 originally, unless it's a big budget title, NONE of the companies can make money off of it. The reason $60 became the standard over $50 was that developers were charging $50 and unless the game was a massive, system seller hit they were hemmoraging money.

I'm also guessing you don't have a job.

Games were around $40 one day? I don't know, but I always paid around $50 in Switzerland for Games, even on the good old Genesis o_O I just saw the price tag on Blaze and Blade (PS1) I played with my bro for some hours and it was roughly $50 (and this because the dollar is low atm :/ Back then it would have been around $60). I personally have way enough money to afford them (I'm actually collecting them somehow xD) and I'm even importing them (which is actually cheaper than buying them here)

its all about finding deals AND USING GAMEFLY. $15 a month to PLAY ANY GAME OUT. I like to get gamefly once every couple months just try out the games i didn't feel were worth buying or just have missed for a cheap price. you do not have to pay $65 for every game you play. Open up your mind bro!!!!!!!1

Also a neat trick with game fly is the first time you try you can get 30 days 2 games out at a time for $15. Before it renews threaten to cancel and they will give you another offer for $15 2 games out at once. You can keep doing this so you dont have to pay the standard price of $25 for 2 games.

I live in Mexico and as you know wages here are much lower than those in the US. How do I keep gaming? Its all a matter of managing your money wisely. Most people at work tend to run out of money almost a week before the next pay day. What I do is to limit myself to a daily budget, I spend no more than 100 pesos (now less than 10 dollars) a day. That way I've managed to buy myself 4 games last month (not all at full price). Now that Prototype is getting released, I'm ready with the money even though I just started paying my new LCD. So, as I said, its all a matter of how you manage your money. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices to get what you want.

Games are only $60 new everywhere I go. Special Editions are normally $70 or more. That isn't a total stipend when getting games every other month, which is what I do. You can create some sort of savings plan, like save 1 dollar a day for 2 months, then buy a new game. I'm sure you can afford 1 extra dollar if you're working a full time job. If not and you want to continue gaming then cut back on other expenses. If you can't afford to cut back then just don't buy games. To be quite honest, I'm very irritated with how you seem to assume gaming prices are too high and everyone should be sickened by it. I honestly don't know what to say to that other than that is your own opinion. Some people like where the prices are at now and have no issue with them. If you can't afford something then don't buy it.

Oh god just forget it alright? Australians pay more for their gear regardless. If i was to go to America and swap my money i will only get around 00:67C per dolar. So i lose money if i use American currency From Australian.

i dont even notice console games prices go up, in uk they been rrp of 40pounds for years and years. like easily over 10 years. and since the credit crunch in the last year theres been any amounts of games come out for like 35pounds. on day one sometimes even 30pounds. if anything they are dropping. (in the uk) only the top games for 360 i find at maxed out recently at 40pounds. and we've had massive hit on the currency games are one of the few things that come from abroad that havent gone up thankfully from comments on this forum for a long time ive always seen usa people saying they pay 60$ for a game theres always shops that will charge 70$ i bet as theres always some shops in uk that will have a daft price of 45-50pounds even if its cheaper everywhere else. i just think the thread creator does not do enough home work before buying a game, theres a shop near me always charges 5-10pounds more for most games and dont drop prices fast enough when they get old . so i never use them my tip is to the thread creator if ur buying a new game. go to town and visit every shop before buying it. i have like 4 shops to visit at least game. gamestation grainger games and hmv. now they all usually are 40pounds tops for the newest of games in first week. but if u go to all they are normally like 2 of them offering a better price. and thats not including chips who are the 45/50 pound shop i mentioned. if i was the thread creator do this. if your just moaning about the general price in games well i think we get better value for money now than ever. games for me were this expensive years back but cost much much less to make. now you hear about games with 20million pound budgets and thats not the most expensive ive heard either. and these games are still same prices as when i had a nintendo 64 i can remember one point when the snes and megadrive were at their peak. they really tried it on and we had games coming out for like 60-70 pounds. it was really excessive. the snes culprits were the street fighter 2 games the editions from turbo and mega drive made sure their virtua games like racing and fighter were in the 70s. sales for other games that tried it though proper dropped as people baulked at the prices and it faded out fast back to the 40s so my 3 tips for cheaper gaming that work well are always shop around when u buy a new game, it normally pays off for the extra 30 mins you have to spend, hell even do this for old games and second hand if the town has a few shops to browse you should get the prices from all shops unless you know its the best get a rental account eg love film or block buster, even if u rent in store theres so many games that last you less than a week, and week is a standard rent. but with love film by post or another service you can keep the game as long as you need and send back. means you only spend like what 10dollars or pounds a month to rent a game plus if you search for sign up deals on google its not uncommon to get 2/3 months free anyways - worth doing even if u are going to cancel the trial afterwards there honestly was a third tip but ive well forgotton it lmfao ill reply if i rememember. :p

Actually they do pay less. The AUD is currently trading at 79.32 US cents. So a $79 AUD game would cost $62.66 USD, and a $89 AUD game would cost $70.59 USD. A $99.95 AUD RRP game would cost $79.28 USD, and a $109.95 AUD RRP game would cost $87.21 USD. So quite a saving on the RRPs, and even a decent saving on our "discounted" new releases.

one guy I work with is so excited about protype he "has to buy" the day it comes out (what if it sucks?). he was also a few seconds earlier saying how broke he was. I think for alot of ppl it comes down to patience's some have some don't. me I gamefly and keep it till I'm done with it or want to buy it, it's cheaper buying from them then gamestop or whatever, and every 3 month I get 5 dollars to do with as I please and after a year I get a good discount. and the biggest plus is I can keep it till I have the money to buy it. I'm in no rush and have a steady supply of new games coming when I want them so I'm happy and that's all that matters i guess.:)

The price for entertentainment in general is a disgrace afterall its only a product for entertainment which we dont "need" but peoples need to be entertained means companys will continue to milk us. I love video games but i only buy games brand new if they are killer titles (gears, halo, mass effect). 90% of games i get, by trading in old ones and using that money to get new ones although they are usually 2nd hand. End of the day i get to enjoy my hobby and save a crap load of money in the proccess.

Happy days 8)

Ive been paying 70 bucks for games for Years in Canada so its nothing new to me. Im suprised it has taken you guys this long to get our prices with how greedy the publishers are.

does it suck? of course it does. But I always try to just avoid EB, Bestbuy, ect.. and Try to use Amazon or other online retailers with free shipping. Mainly because Amazon Canada sells new release games 5-10 bucks cheaper than retail stores and with free shipping it actually saves you hundreds a year if your an avid gamer.

Im quite lucky cause we have a shop in the U.K. that lets you trade in games and gives you damn good prices for it. One setback is, all there stock is 2nd hand so you may have to wait a while before they get a copy of a new game. As long as you dont mind waiting a little while, having gaming as a hobby ends up costing you very little.

I somewhat agree. I've not bought a new game in months and usually if i want one i have to wait months before the prices goes down so i can buy it. There are plenty of good deals out there but most of them games are either just terrible or i'm not interested in it.

I mostly buy Multiplayer and must-have games new. Otherwise I'll wait for cuts. Currently I'm well stocked with games so this works well for me. :)

I seriously carn't believe people who say game prices are so high. Of course i'd like to pay less for my games, but when you look into the sheer amount of work and effort thats put into them, i believe it to be a fair price.

There are so many good games i've yet to play on xbox 360 so i've still got a lot of bargain bin scavenging to do and i'm sure its likewise for alot of people, xbox 360 has so many games people just forget or probably thinks its crap because its 'old'.If there is a game i absolutley must have i will get it day one but thats pretty rare for me to pull off.

Remember some shops are just blatently ridiculous i've seen Test Drive:Unlimited in a shop a few months ago for $110 AU which someone was saying before is about $87 US and that game is years old.
