i dont mind paying the 50 bucks or however much it is...and honestly i think we're finally seeing all the money being put towards something like project natal and other great features like the netflix.
for your $50 on xbox live you are basically paying 90% of that towards jessica chobot and major nelson and others. your paying for all that game previews, exclusive demos and the rest being the online play. i wish i could cut my $50 and make it $25 if i wish not to view all those game previews and major nelson "how to" sections.
It's $70CDN, and it's not that much in the scheme of things... but in principle it's another HD console over the lifecycle of the hardware gen/or double the price of the console actual. People scoffed at the price of Sony's console @ launch, well to gold subscibers since day one (asuming they've never had to buy another one) newsflash 360 was the more expensive choice.
bubnux
Newsflash: No one ever forced you to pay for live. It's entirely up to you if you want online play or not. The 360 isn't the more expensive choice.
I definetly mind. Ignoring the fact that we're giving MS money for not actually doing anything, it's $100 a year in aus, thats $500 over the life-span of the console. Thats assuming the gen only goes 5 years, this gen might be longer.
With online play, I'd say the 360 is probably the best console this gen, but without it, well, online play is critical to consoles, the PS3 and Wii would easilly out class the 360 regardless of anything else, well, maybe not the Wii, I love the thing for multiplayer with friends, but online really sucks...
So looking at prices, and these are Australian prices, half them for US prices if you want.
Wii: $400
PS3: $500 (was 600-700 before slim)
Xbox 360: $400 + $500 = $900
So yeah um, is your console worth $900?
DriftRS
No. It's not. The online play is where the money is going. Not the console itself. Stop having the mentality that Xbox Live is forced upon you.
[QUOTE="H_U_R_D"]
i dont mind paying $3.84 a month for an online service
if we all didnt pay, live would be just as crappy as playstation home or whatever the Wii's got
FunkyHeadHunter
I really get annoyed at people talking down about PS3 online service. I have played it. And its less laggy and less annoying "kids, thug wannabes, cursing, loud music playing through the mic, and all around idiots"..LIVE has become nothing more then a playgound for kids/immature people and the like..Sorry, but its true.
That is exactly why we have the mute feature, and the rep system. Mute 'em, avoid 'em. It's THAT simple.
I dont mind it at all, it's like $4 dollars a month. Most people who complain are well off and just like to b*%#h at whatever they can find.nate_c-12Thats oh so true! I dont mind either, i was at my friends place and he played battlefield online, he lagged so bad and his internet connection is about 3 times better then mine, when i went home and bought it for myself on xbox, i havent had any lag lol, i guess you get awesome quality for it.

Ahh sure, but the vast VAST majority do want to play online, and my point is, to add that online to the 360, as available on every other console, practically doubles the cost of the console.[QUOTE="MadVybz"][QUOTE="CoolFX"] So subtract the cost, but lose out on online entirely? To buy an Xbox 360 and NOT play online is ridiculous.DriftRS

It does not increase the cost of the CONSOLE. Reapeat. It does not increase the cost of the CONSOLE. Jeez, how many times do I have to say it? The 360 is a product, Xbox Live is a service. The two cannot mix and just be added on to the overall cost of the PRODUCT, because they aren't the same thing. The SERVICE, isn't mandatory. Just because the majority of a market is going to pay for a SERVICE, doesn't mean that the PRODUCT'S cost is increased in any way, shape or form.

Ahh sure, but the vast VAST majority do want to play online, and my point is, to add that online to the 360, as available on every other console, practically doubles the cost of the console. To make things clear, let's put it like this.
Let's say you buy a TV, or a refridgerator. Now, let's also say that the fridge/TV costs you around $1000.
Now, you need electricity to power it, yes? Well, there is a SERVICE available to you, to power the PRODUCT you have purchased. But, just because the SERVICE is costing you $100 a month to use your fridge/TV, doesn't mean that the cost of your PRODUCT is increasing by $100 every month. It's merely the charge that you are paying to use such service.
Now, just because the majority of people who buy fridges and TVs will use electricty to watch and store food, doesn't mean anything, because you can use them for ANY purpose you wish, because you paid for them, *ahem* the PRODUCTS.
Wanna use your fridge as a boat? Go right ahead. Wanna use that flat screen HDTV as a table? Go for it. You see what I'm getting at here?
I don't since I got two years of Xbox live for $60. Although even before that I never cared as I can afford paying it..
Was liking the Section 8 demo but thinking I don't want to have to buy this for £40 then pay another £40 for Live - £80 just to play a game online? Then I played the pc version. It plays and looks miles better, will be significantly cheaper than the 360 version and won't cost me any extra to play online.
Putting my little tale to one side - any extra costs only serve to deter potential customers. At some point the PS3 online will have all the same features as XBL and won't cost anything. How many people will choose to buy a PS3 then because there are no hidden charges?

I disagree with that completley. Because we pay for Xbox Live it will always be ahead of PSN. Sony doesn't charge and that is why they are so behind because they don't have the resources. I don't mind paying if it means excellent service that beats the competition. It's when I am paying $50 a year and it's behind the competition I will care.
very true. the play station network if free and their servers are dedicated so everyone gets to play without the host lagging or whatnot. instead its like it should be. if you have a bad connection, you should lag, not everyone else. only for exclusives titles. yeah. i watched my buddy play on the ps3 network last night and it said he had to pay to play that new metal gear solid game online. pretty weak just to pay for some server play time.I'm thinking something like $0 since every other company gives you dedicated online servers for free, vs xbox live's peer to per networking.
As for the whole sharing of achievments and community and demo's and what-not, most of it isn't even hosted by Microsoft, including all the big downloads. Steam is an equivilent system, and is completely free. So yeah, dunno what we're actually paying for with xbox live.
DriftRS
I really don't mind at all. It's only $50 a year you can't complain too much for something that cheap.
Anyone who says they do mind having to pay $50 for one year needs to wake up. The cost on one new game is $60. The cost of a new map pack/game addon is usually $10. An entire year (thats 365 days!) of online play costs a low $50. In fact with the year card you get an extra month...so 395 days. lol.
I think it's a fallacy for people to say no one is forcing you to buy it. If you don't then in most cases you are only getting half the game. You can't pay half the price though can you? It would only stand up as a valid argument if all MP games had full bot support so you didn't need Live to get the MP experience.

Do you really think that anyone without live would waste their money on a game like CoD or Halo 3? No. They would go for RPGs like Fable and Fallout 3, action adventures like Batman AA and Devil May Cry. Single player experiences. Only a stupid child would buy the best blockbuster shooter and not have Live.
i dont mind cause xboxlive is the best and better in quality to the psn but if xboxlive wasnt that good i would not want to be paying for it
I mind because I rarely play games online.
But it is annoying to miss out on it on the odd occasion I want to use it.
I don't see why silver members can't just play online for free. Fill the dashboard with ads, don't give me any other benefits. I don't care.
FamiBox
Because silver members help fund all the benefits the goldies get :P
I dont mind paying for xbox live at all. I think they have a superior online service compared to the competitors and I dont think that $50 is unreasonable. How many people are out there paying money every two months to play WOW....ALOT. Yet they continue to pay! Most people who complain about paying are the same people that can waste $10 or $20 a day on things like cigarettes, takeout, and other crap but yet its too expensive to pay a one time fee for a premium service. I say either get a job, stop being cheap, or go buy the other system and leave the real 360 fans alone to enjoy LIVE in peace. Nuff said.
i have both a 360 and a ps3 and love them both and have trouble when i try to compare the systems to each other but one thing that i have concluded is IMO xboxlive is better that PSN.
bu some people say that since PSN is free it is better, i say no, i truly dont mind paying 50 dallors for a year(and some free crap) of xboxlive its not that much of a burden to me.
so my question is do you guys mind paying that money?
nofriekinlemons
if u pay for xbox live since xbox 1 by now u would have spend enough money to buy a $600 launch ps3
i used to have live but since i dont like ms excusives it makes no since for me to pay for online when the mulitplats are free online with psn
xbox live is better than psn BUT ONLY WHEN IT COMES TO FEATURES, DLC AND EARLY DEMOS XBOX LIVE FEE DOES NOT IMPROVE ACTUAL ONLINE GAMEPLAY
i would rather pay $3 dollars a month extra to get more download speed from my isp than pay for features i dont even use
i have tested multiplat games on both live and psn and there is no difference with the online gameplay
if u like ms exclusives then xbox live is worth it but if ur into multiplats and ps3 exclusives then u dont really need xbox live

You completely misunderstand the situtation.
Xbox Live has all of the features, DLC, demos, arcade etc. BECAUSE of the fee. The PSN is so far behind of XBL because of it. It will soon have Facebook, Twitter and MySpace (I think) as well.
XBL is more for just online gaming, and so many people just don't get that.

ur right about features and thats why i agreed that xbox live is better but its not for everyone and i guess am a rare person that does not care for twitter or myspace that i could just access through my pc i dont even use my ps3 web browser and i dont use it for blue-ray movies

Even though I can agree with what you're saying, I think that the only why we'll ever see such applications on XBL is to get all the gamers who don't have it, get it.
same here. plus, we get excellent service :DI really dont mind, 50 dollars is not that much.
