Depends what problem you're having.

If it's the 3 red rings, it's free.

from what i hear its like 90 dollars i think to go through microsoft. but really it depend on the issue. most things can be fixed easily by yourself. it would involve opening your 360, which would void your warentee but would polly be cheaper... lots of tutorials online... ever hear of google? zahah^^

if its not 3 red rings but within 1 year of buying the system, its free (whatever the problem is)

if you've past the 1 year warrenty and its anything but 3 red rings, its $99

are the 3 red rings the 3/4 circle red or 3 flashing red lights?

i know im a noob at this kind of thing

Nothing is free unless it is under the 2 year warranty.

actually its 3 and that means every 360 ever made until nov 22 08
