I bought mine within the first few months after it came out. I have had no problems to speak of. I have no idea what the launch chip was but thats what I have. I have used it for roughly 4-8 hrs per week with some random times of not playing while messing with my roommates PS3. I probably will have it blow up on me immediately due to this post. We'll see.
My launch console lasted 3 years. Second console lasted up until a few months ago. Third console I hope takes me over to the next generation of consoles.
Trying to remember, but I think I got my current one around January of 2008. My first one got and RROD, and I used that as an excuse to get an Elite, which I had been wanting for awhile.
First one i got a little after launch in Aust so like so about 3 and half years , had one RRoD, a friend bought it off me and i bought an Elite early this year, no probs so far..
Our latest 360 is only about 2 months old. It has the Jasper motherboard, but I'm using a 200w PSU from the Zephyr model. The new PSU is really lightweight, which isn't good in the long run. Fluctuating voltages can kill components, so I'm playing it safe...
The fried one in my closet is over three years old. The one in my entertainment center is around 10 months old. I've been less hard on my newer one (i.e. not keeping it on for an excess of 12 hours a day, for several days a week. Damn you Modern Warfare!)
The one in the living room Dec 08 Falcon, gets played about 2-3 hours a day but can get used 10-12 hours at a time if friends are over on the weekend. The one in the bedroom Jan 06 Zephyr I believe. It used to get played the same amount as the other one, but it has been retired to the bedroom so probably 4-5 hours a week, and quite a bit of DVD use. No cooler on either, and neither has ever had any problems, yet.
My (semi) launch system lasted from December 2005 to May 2008. The second one lasted from May 2008 to September 2009. Go figure. Also, I have no idea what chips are in these models.
