Goldeneye 1

I spent some time thinking about FPS earlier, basically because that is what the 360 is mainly about, but I particularly thought about Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. I'm positive the majority of you know it, and have played it, etc.

What I thought about was the fact that it was a First Person Shooter on the Nintendo 64. Now there are many things ironic with that fact, the first being that it is 2007 and I recently looked up all the shooter games for the Wii, and let me just say that there's not much, and the second being that at the time, FPS wasn't a genre for consoles.

I guess all console gamers who love fps break the gaming stereotype dealing with FPS and console gamers. I don't know about you, but I LOVE FPS/TPS, it's my gaming life, I go back to the years of Super Mario 64, and even Super Mario for SNES, that's the farthest I can go as I am only 18, but my later gaming enjoyment has come from shooters in general, not to take anything away from the classics that I loved such as Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong, Crash Bandicoot, and various others on N64, Playstation, SNES, Dreamcast.... Now, back on point, as at one point, FPS wasn't really considered a genre on consoles. Well, times have changed, and ever since Goldeneye came out, possibly it changed the plot towards console fps development.

Many don't see the significance of Goldeneye, as I have recently been watching YouTube videos and various other videos displaying goldeneye gameplay, many comments you may find are stupid comments about how much the game sucks, but possibly these are the kids who have higher standards then what was back at that time. Not to be biased or to directly offend anyone of a young age with my comment, this isn't what this is about.

Taking a look back at the best Bond game;

In August 1997 (usa dunno about others), the best James bond game had been released to co-exist with the release of Tommorrow Never Dies in theaters, later Decemeber. At E3 1997, the hype for the game was dreadfully low, and to make matters worse; Goldeneye was a FPS, on N64 and everyone knew FPS was a PC genre and that they didn't work on consoles.

Goldeneye has had a lasting impact in many ways, being that it was released in 1997 and was almost the top selling game of 1998 as well as the #1 sold n64 game and has outsold all sales of gamecube games, not very surprising. Not only does it remind us of why there are 4 controller ports on the N64, but also of all the good times we had with paintball mode enabled. Besides that, Goldeneye definitely opened the door to console FPS as it will forever leaving a lasting impact on how FPS is to be played on consoles, and not just on the pc platform. And it still is fun to play with friends, even 10 years after release. Anyone out there still have their copy, it's somewhere in my closet, but I got IT! I just played Runaway and Facility the other day!!!

Well, all I can say is, thanks a lot to goldeneye, and the guys at rare (before they left) for creating this game.

Excellent post. Unfortunately, people who never had the joy of experiencing GoldenEye in its day will never understand how revolutionary it was. Goldeneye is by far one of the best games ever created, second only to Super Metroid.

I am 23, I grew up with Atari and Nintendo, later moved onto Genesis and then SNES. Super Metroid was *the* game to play when SNES was around. After that, I got my first Playstation console with Ridge Racer, and then a short time later got the N64 for Christmas with Goldeneye.

No game has captured that original feeling of intense action in Goldeneye, and no game will ever reach that level again because I first experienced it in Goldeneye. Every other game will follow in its tracks, and this isn't a bad thing, it's just not a new experience anymore.

Excellent post as JKool said. You're completely correct. I still play Goldeneye to this day and I think it totally revolutionized FPS's to date.

Great post for a great game ... one point though do you think that Goldeneye would have worked without Nintendo's revolutionary controller that it was played on, on the N64? I don't think the game would have worked or been such a breath of fresh air on consoles without this important part of the jigsaw .... I played Golden eye just the other day (I getting a man room sorted with all my old consoles) and I have to say even though the graphics are not quite as stunning as you thought they were then the gameplay still holds out .....

True - it was revolutionary because it brought FPS to consoles in a "large volume". It wasn't the first game of it's kind though - even for consoles.

The first FPS for consoles that I can recall that was any decent was for the Sega Genesis and was called "Zero Tolerance" - that game IMO was truly revolutionary - unfortunately the genre was young in the days of 16 bit gaming and people didn't really get it yet. :)

Goldeneye was in fact one of the best shooters I have ever played, despite it being a console game. We need to see more games like it ;) Perfect Dark was good or better technically, but I think it may have been a day late and a dollar short, because by the time it released, it was toward the end of the 64's run. I don't think it had the same "it" factor as Goldeneye did, either. Ipicked up PD about 4 or 5 years ago for 12 bucks, unopened ;)

I am 28 yrs old and so I was playing Goldeneye when it came out for the 1st time and it was the original FPS. I remember being blown away buy EVERYTHING in that game, the graphics, gameplay butthe N64 pad DEFINATLEY helped make the game. I still remeber using that mushy to look around the room for the 1st time and using the other to run up and down a corridor, ahhh memories, but it wasn't justthe gameplay, it had the added bonus of trying to unlock all the secrets in the game. Completeing Facility in under 3.15 ifI remember rightly was HARD!!!

But when Perfect Dark came along it just blew Goldeneye out of the water. The 4 player multi trying to complete all the co-op and just shooting my mates was amazing. The graphics were amazing, no slow down and just the fun of playing it. I would love Rare to bring Perfect Dark out as a budget title. They could spruce up the graphics a little, incorporate 16 player multi and bung that out for £20. I know I would buy it.

I know this is a minority opinion, but I could never warm to the N64 control scheme, particularly for shooters. That analog stick just...I never really felt like I wasplaying a FPS. It seemed more like driving a tank around. Little things added up, like not being able to leap from ledges or even jump off the side of a low ramp to avoid an enemey. Something just bugged me about dieing because some invisible wall was keeping me from stepping off the side of a ramp when the ground was probably no more than two feet down.

I looked at Goldeneye and then at the gameplay of Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, and I knew that PC FPSs were for me. Inever enjoyed a console's FPS controls until I played Halo years later.

thank you for describing in detail what has been on my mind for many years. I am happy and proud to say that I was around to experience this revolution on gaming history and still have my original copy. I played through the entire game 3 days ago with a friend and still understand how it is one of the best games of all time.

My mistake. I thought you meant playing Goldeneye was the best thing that ever happened to you. :P

Anyway, being a kid is cool for a while, but getting challenged is more fun in my opinion. But if you're 17 then you're probably still in a school that doesn't do much for you.

I agree that Goldeneye 64 was a revolutionary game, and changed the FPS genre.

FPS games, before Goldeneye, were underground and appealed mainly to a core fan base of Quake and Doom players. They were run-and-gun styled with no strategy and unimpressive graphics.

Goldeneye made FPS games a mainstream genre, by making it graphically beautiful, with realistic physics, intuitive controls, and requiring some strategic thinking on the part of the player.

Although, Half-Life is also largely responsible for spawning the FPS craze as well... but I believe that GoldenEye had a deeper impact on those who were inexperienced with FPS from the start.
