I finally discovered why so many xbox 360s fail.

Well I knew they were rushed to release the 360, i always thought cause they wanted to be at the starting line at the same time as sony.

I did a little research and found that the orignal xbox ran a Nvidia graphics card. And, guess who's contract was almost up??? Nvidia refused to renew for apparently undisclosed reasons. They rushed to get the green light on the 360's with the cards but couldn't and had to move to whoever does it now. This meant two things: Because the contract was done, the original xbox's new manufacturing was done, thus is why you can only buy them used. Secondly, it meant the 360 lost its 100% backwards compatability.

If I had known this at date of purchase (8-2-07) I would have never bought it.

Is anyone else very dissappointed by that? Typical Microsoft.

ya pretty much everyone knows about this even before the 360 came out, it has a GPU from ATI which is Nvidia's biggest rival, so no one expected it to have hardware backward compatibility, thats why MS is now using software emulators to fix it.

That explains why the BC may be a little less than cool, but how does this explain why the 360s are breaking? Was it the ATI GPU that caused my DVD drive to stop working?

I don't remember MS ever saying that the 360 was going to be 100% backwards compatible. They said that popular XBOX titles would be made BC. Everyone knew from the onset that the 360 would be using an ATI chip, instead of Nvidia's.

Uhh... ATI had a contract with Microsoft since 2003. Microsoft sued Nvidia in 2002 over GPU prices. Also, ATI was willing to customize a GPU for Microsoft, Nvidia isn't. For the orignal Xbox Nvidia modified a Geforce 3. For the PS3 Nvidia modified a Geforce 7900. While ATI made a completely customized GPU specfically for Microsoft for the 360 and for Nintendo on the Wii. Basically ATI offered better terms than Nvidia did. The system was rushed to be released before the PS3 and Wii but don't blame ATI for that, blame Microsoft.

The main problem is not the design of the GPU but the placement of it and the design of the 360's cooling system. Microsoft stupidly placed the GPU right under the DVD drive, by placing it there the heat that the GPU generates cannot be ventaliated, this causes the system to overheat. This design flaw still has not been fixed, btw. Also, the fans used for the cooling was too weak.

Is that y they were losing money when it 1st came out cause it was so cheap to make? Remeber 360 uses ddr3 for its RAM most pc still use ddr2 4 RAM and DDr3 is only 4 there GPU.

The head start wasn't necessary:oops:

I'm confused as to how this explains why so many RRoD? The fact that MS was using ATI instead of Nvidia was known prior to the 360 coming out based on the technical specs of the console that were released a few months prior and they never promised 100% backwards compatibility. I do wish they had made X-Men Legends 1 and 2 BC though, I liked playing those.

1. The 360s GPU can do every function the Xbox's could, compatibility is not an issue in that respect. 2. 360s fail because they were rushed through design and manufacturing only using the absolute dirt cheap 3rd worlds parts they could find. 3. MS wants to make Money, not happy customers.teebeenz

So the Xbox 360 is not full B.C.

What the hell does that have to do with Xbox 360s breaking? NOTHING

Damn, I still have a release-day 360 that hasn't failed yet . Placing the GPU under the drive is indeed a failure of gigantic proportions . How could they not know that ?

I have to wonder just what in the world goes through a person's head that squirts out the logic that simply leaving your 360 bricked is a more reasonable and effective solution to the problem then simply sending it in and getting it repaired completely free of charge? Are those few weeks of waiting really so painful that it is worth all of the money you spent enjoying your 360 simply to not have to bear the wait? I must be losing my mind because any of my friends that have RRoD'd opted to simply leave it as was and purchase a brand new one instead. I can't ever seem to get a reasonable explanation from them either as to the reasoning behind this...

edit: And yeah, as for the PS3, I imagine it's failure rate will go up in congruence with it's game library. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the biggest factor in making electronics is use....soooo as people have more reason to play it so to will it have more reason to fail :)

The reason they brick is a) poor design and construction and most significantly A SEMI-PASSIVE COOLING FAN. In an effort to keep their console slim, they made fans than suck air away from the heatsink instead of blowing over it, thus utilizing cooling meant for low-end office PCs instead of high-end gaming monsters. The design is flawed.

So are we suggesting that Sony and Nintendo give money to the poor, save puppies from the streets, find bums under the bridge and give them jobs, and even give Nadia the fry lady at McDonalds billions of dollars because they are so much nicer than Microsoft? Give me a break. It's all about the money. Who has more of it, who wants more of it.

I'll tell you what; if I could find a restaurant supply manufacturer that wanted to sell me cheaper materials so I could turn a higher profit, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Seriously, both Microsoft and Sony made their machines for one reason, to make money. No matter how much they say 'We make our consoles for you all to enjoy' yeah sure. Im sure the local gamestores say 'We sell games for you all to enjoy', it's all for money. It just so happens that the 360 was released a little too early before it was fully tested. However, i can't wait to laugh at Sony when people find a fault in their console. The 360 may have it's RRoD, but your telling me that Sony can make a fully working top graphical machine and Microsoft cant? Some kind of fault will be found with the PS3.meconate
You're missing the point and apparently putting your fingers in your ears and screaming LALALALA. MS makes its money by taking over markets, they spend billions on products aimed at forcing others out, and once theyve got it to themselves thats when they make cash from it. Sony and Nintendo however are making money from selling the consoles/games, thats their goal not to control the market. Also, as mentioned a thousand times MS rushed the 360 to beat Sony to the gate, add that to their famous bug tolerance policy and its a problem just waiting to happen. Sony waited till everything was ready, will there be issues? Sure, they'll have some duds here and there but thats from wear and tear and general error rates, not a scandel of the likes of the 360.

Interesting. I just find it funny that the original warrant on the 360 was a year, and that lots of people including me have their 360's die just after the first year. This seems suspicious. I don't care though MS made an awesome console with awesome games, also they repair most 360's for free.

And I have some friends who do more than enough in taking care of their consoles. Hell, some of them are the epitome of clean and careful. Yet, their Xboxes still got the red ring. Thus in the case of the 360, it's not simply a matter of taking care of the system. It's still got a flawed design that makes it have a higher chance of failure than most average electronics.
