i bought a 360 in august of last year and pluged the ethernet cable into my pc hoping to get onto xbox live. ever since ive been hit with the same problem, 'failed on ip adress'. i have still not been able to get online through my 360 months later i now have a wii and just bought the wireless usb for it, i can not get online with this as it says it cant find the address for my pc. i look on the 360 menu where it say ip address and it give me about nine numbers, if it has found the address why cant i get connected? my frustration grows.

If you're using a DSL connection, your Internet provider needs to know some information about those consoles that you want to connect.  They'll probably need to know the MAC address of the consoles (it's listed in the 360's internet settings) so that no unidentified machines are on the network from your home.

Call your ISP and they can probably help you solve the problem.

Yah i agree it should not be plugged into your pc but into your modem before i bought a router i had to constantly disconnect my pc from my modem and hook up my xbox and then i got smart just bought a router made it so much better. This could be the problem but what kind of connection do you have and who is your ISP those two things would also play a factor
