I went down to my local game-shop the otherday to buy myself a used XBOX360 (they are on sale for $150 a piece). I examined the exterior of all the five that they had in stock and so far so good but..... According to a lot of XBOX360 users the machine tends to wear down after not too long of usage and I am a bit worried about that. Is it possible to check when the machine was purchased in the first place? Please I need some advice.

Kill yourself, then you don't have to make a decision.

Just buy this, its a premium, which means it has the wireless controller and 20gig HDD. But I'm not sure if its used.

Gah, that sucks. No problem. I don't think you could check its previous use, if that is your question. But you should recieve a year warranty from where your buying it, I would guess. Even if the console fails, MS will send you a new or refurbished one for a hundred dolars. SoI would take that deal if I were you.
