i thought MS said the big update released date is NOV 11, 2008 and the down time was for maintance and to allow company employees to beta test the new system. So in short if you a MS employee you can update to the new interface and beta test it everyone else will get updated on 11/11/2008 unless the beta test has to many problems then it will go back to the drawing board.

i was kinda dissappointed too. see, i don't SPEND HOURS of my day trying to find out the latest information on what exactly the people at microsoft are doing, i go on xbox live 2-3 times a week, and i rarely ever post/go on gamespot. all i knew was that xbox was gonna be down for 24 hours, and a new update was on the way. so i put the two together. when i went on this afternoon expecting to see new stuff, i was kinda bummed out, not DEPRESSED or CRYING, just kinda bummed out... how does that make me an idiot?

I don't see how anyone could expect the update already. Release Dates aren't set in the future so they can "surprise" you.

So you were disappointed that they are doing pre-update maintenance? I'm not. Better that than getting your update and having Live crash. Now THAT would be a dissapointment.
