Try having them remove you (or you remove them) and send them another friend request (or have them send you another friend request). Accept it and see if that works. If not make sure you both have XBL Gold, because you need gold to join a partly. Last thing is that you both need to make sure your connection is set to open. Go to test xbox live connection and test your connection. Where it says NAT if it doesn't say open for both of you and maybe says moderate or strict, than that is your problem. One of you or both of you are probably using a router if the connection is not already open. If you need to know how to open your connection, let me know if everything else didn't work first.
