To be honest, from what I've played so far I would score it lower than GS.

I don't think any site actually reviews games they just use whatever score they think will get them the most hits. Like U.S. news stations. None of them report anything they just sensationalize to get better viewershipnosedive51
that is stupid. gamespot's reviews are fairly accurate so i dont know what you are talking about

"Hurr hurr Gamespot is stupid-biased so they're retarded to give ME an 8.5 I THINK it deserves a 10000/10!" You know what? You don't agree with Gamespot's OPINION but all you're doing is giving your OPINION saying it deserves a 10, Gamespot actually backed up their score. I didn't watch their video review but IGN didn't do anything but dis the game their's. You all are just saying it's bad fps but IGN listed, the environments having to load up, the AI is bad (it, apparently, just sorta stands there from time to time and your squad isn't that smart), can't really do anything with your squad, and sometimes your controls even lag and you can't shoot or anything. Now if I'm playing a game that's supposed to be as great as ME and it did all of those things, I personally wouldn't give it above a 9. Kinda makes me wonder why IGN gave it a 9.3 anyway. I'm guessing IGN just enjoyed the game a whole lot and just took like .2-.5 off for those glitches but Gamespot reviewed those things heavily. And if AC and ME weren't review by the same people you can shut up about it. It's all **** opinion anyway, you can shut the hell up about it now. That review didn't change lives.

let me see, loading problems, pop in issues, framerate trouble, freezing occasionally. What about any of that should give the game a 9? That would be like an A- in school. Would you receive that kind of grade on a paper you wrote that had good ideas and solid facts but was litered with grammatical errors? I don't think so. 8.5 is a nice B or B+. It's good, but could have done with out stupid mistakes.

You should not care so much about the score, but the actual depth of the review. The complaints that it brings up are valid and I don't think that you can deny that.

Why does gamespot go and give a game like Mass Effect 8.5. The game is a classic, their must be some people shaking their heads at gamespot, and going what did we just do. This is a joke and it makes Gamespot look bad.The gameshould have got a 9.5 or 10, I think its one of the greatest games every made.

paul265

An 8.5 is a great score for a great game with some flawslike Mass Effect. For me ME is the best game ever greated but the fact is that it's not perfect. ME deserves a 8.5 but lots of other reviews in GS are overrated. AC, while it's amazing does get repetitive real fast and deserves an 8, as do many other titles that GS gave a 9 or higher. So it's not the ME review that it bad, it's just that every other review too high.

dude, stop just stop posting threads like this, it's some 30-40 year old man making an opinion on a game, big whoop, hell if they gave a game like ninja gaiden a 2/10 i'd still buy it and play it for as long as i had. jebus the fact that you are bothered by a FREAKIN WEBSITE'S REVIEW makes me pity your lost soul, do us all a favor and grow some ballz and choose a game based on YOUR thoughts, not others. the only reason that you should read/watch a review is to see what the errors with the game is and see if you can deal with those issues....nothing else.

Ok? so are you like forbidden from playing games with a score lower than 9 or something? It's not that big of a deal. It's just an opinion and should be treated as such. If someone told you that your favorite shirt is ugly, would you never wear it again even though you like it?

Well first off I love the game Mass Effect. Having said that it got the score it deserves. Controls are not the best, framerate issues, alot of little things. I would still recommend the game but 8.5 is a fair score. However Assassins Creed a 9. This one I have a problem with.

To everyone defending Gamespot's score of 8.5:

Did you ever consider the fact that Eternal Sonata got the exact same score? It's a fun little J-RPG, but come on. It didn't do anything to move the genre forward or revolutionize the way the genre is played. That's why it deserves that score. Mass Effect has it's issues no doubt, however it has raised the bar for RPG's the world over. In areas of graphics, voice acting, story, and gameplay it has pushed real time RPG's to the next level. I personally feel Kevin really didn't recognize that in his review. He seems to enjoy light hearted RPG's more. He has the right. He can in fact rate a game however he so desires. I on the other hand feel the game deserves better, and I too am entitled to my opinion. BOOYAKASHA!

I've come to hate the fact that GS only does 8.0-8.5-9.0-9.5 ratings. Feels like a damn Play magazine review.

I also like to average out Gamespot & IGN's reviews. IGN tends to be more forgiving than GS across all platforms. As you can see, they game Mass Effect a 9.2 (I believe). That wasy if you think 8.5 was too harsh and 9.2 is too forgiving, 8.85 makes a nice middleground.

Of course, you can't let one persons review change the way you think about a game. That's all these reviews are - one man or one woman's opinion ona title.

gotcha455

They aren't forgiving they gave Assassin's Creed a 7.7. I played that game yesterday and let me tell you its way better than a 7.7.

I dont like the guy that gave the reviews for Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed. I don't get why Jeff or Alex or Ryan do the reviews for these games. It seems like this guy got lucky and he doesnt seem to be very consistent. I dont trust him.

An 8.5 is a pretty high score. It's very far from a 1, and it's quite a bit above a 5 (which SHOULD put the game right in the middle.) I don't believe that people actually use the scoring system correctly. I know I wouldn't have gave Mass Effect an 8.5, and the way I see it they give many games too high of a score. No game deserves a 9.5 if it isn't nearly perfect.

I think the problem is partially the new scorig system, when you go from a .1 scale to a .5 games that were dece are now getting same scores as amazing or crappy games, just because they cant give anything in between. I agree on the fact GS dropped the ball, we have had an absence of 9.0+ and in the last month they've given out prolly 500% of what they gave out over the last 9 months. The games may deserve it but ya I think gamespot has lost view of whats really important in a game, without rating its gameplay seperate good games get thrased by reviews because I cant look at oh its the sound that sucks or the value or the graphics but the gameplay got a 10, thats where the new review system fails horribly. That and I dont agree with GS almost ever anymore, but I just value different things than most people.

I'm about officially done with GS reviews. When I first played Mass Effect on the first level (Eaden Prime), I thought that wasn't so great but once I got past that the game became 9.5 caliber game in my opinion, I just absolutely hate how GS underrated true classics like for example, Doom on XBLA I thought that was excellent but it only got a 7.2, and Jeff didn't even realize that Doom pretty much started it all for multiplayer deathmatch and possibly FPS overall (even though not the first FPS).

8.5 is a great score. It seems whenever a game doesn't get a 9 or better there isalot of dissapointment. When did 8.5 become a bad score. I know when we like a game we want it to recognized but I don't think GS did an unprofessional job in this case.

8.5 is a fantastic score, and it shouldnt matter what score a game got, all that matters is if you like the game. Whats great to another might be horrible to another.

Like an appraisal, a game review is just an opinion of value. Whereas you consider what is fun to you, Gamespot considers what's fun to the overall consumer. They base their reviews off of gameplay, graphics, sound, replayability, originality and other factors that you don't think to consider. I thought that WWE SvR 08 should have got at least an 8.7, but after reading Gamespot's review, I realized that they put it in the prospective of someone that's not a wrestling fan, and of someone that is a wrestling fan. And where I can tolerate the gliches being a wrestling fan, a non-wrestling fan, gamer may not be so tolerant. I'm not going to call you a fanboy because I think that that's the dumbest word in the world, but ease up. Just write your own review.

Here.here..cheers!! So True that Gamespot ONLY ALLOWS 8.0 and Above Ratings...Take for example COD 4...As consumers to the "cause",our opinions should be valued as much regardless of a 7.0 score so to speak..where as, for those whopost an 8 and above, are sometimes ..blindedor brainwashed by all the Hype thats flooded this planet. Stay True.

[QUOTE="Gen007"]after just getting through the first 3 hours i have to say its at least a 9 only real prob ive had so far is the loading its so often and messes with the frame rate at timesAzelKosMos

That alone is enough to drop it below a 9 to me...

if you understood the depth of the game you'd understand that the frame rate isn't slowed that bad and the game is so vast

most intelligent point ever made on this website. well done. somtimes i dont even think they take into account passed scores. i cant stop playing this game and is an immersive experience to say the least. so much to do/see. Instant classic in my opinion and the most off a review score has ever been on this site. a friend of mine said they must be short staffed at GS or something. This Van nord guy did both AC and ME, and questuionable reviews for both, there is outrage for a reason, its because the population as a whole sees the games as better or worse when it comes to these 2 particular reviews. Most of the time i find that they complain about things in a review that i would have never noticed had i not read/watched the review, or didnt even happened when i played. like the bioshock freezing bug, never happened and i had30 hours in that game. multiple playthroughs. they are overly critical at this site. I always go to the meta review website and take all opinions into account. but i still know what games i want to play before any review ever comes out and have never been swayed either way. i just think this one (mass effect) review is comical.

The only problem I had with the review was that the con's are hard to navigate menu's (which is really only the upgrade menu, and it's not nearly as annoying as he lets on.) and "little problems that build up in the end." .... that's such a grey area. The point of a Con section is to TELL people what the con's are, not just say "it has a bunch of small problems that I wish I could tell you but .... **** I'm busy." which is how I took that. Laziness. And little problems and one hard to navigate menu (that's not hard to navigate at all when you get around the learning curve.) isnt enough to drop it to an 8.5.

I disagree with his opinion, I think Mass Effect is probably one of the best Action/Rpg hybrids ever, and some developers *cough* bethesda *cough* should take some damn notes.

Again 8.5 is an incredibly high score in my book. It's too high for eternal sonata and it's too high for mass effect. Also, KotOR didn't have the same issues as mass effect...atleast not on my PC. So, I'm not sure what you're talking about there.

The reason I use this site so much is because I believe their reviews tend to be the most neutral and honest in how a game shapes up. Plus, if you are putting all of your faith in a number, that's just stupid. Did you READ the review? Everything they said that was good is the reason I would get the game. I can put up with the stuff that brought the game down.

I agree that GameSpot's reviews have become pretty rubbish.
ME got 8.5. That is a rather good score, yet when I watched the video review, the reviewer sort of managed to put a negative slant on it, and it's not the first time GS have done this.
Maybe they think they're "cool" for giving games lower scores than they deserve?

Anyway, I think Gametrailers are the most reliable. And their vid reviews are longer and less vague than GS. ME had a 10 min review!

Graphics are nice but character animation is poor. loses marks in my book for that, but i'm sure that doesnt make the game any less enjoyable. If i rated it at a 0.5, would that make it a bad game or would that just be a bad review? Doesn't change the fact that you guys have it and are playing it.

How can you say it revoltionized RPGs? It was just released yesterday. You cannot base a review on a game about how it revolutionized RPGs until it actualy does have an impact on later games and therefore really has no impact on its rating.

Excuse me, but "a classic"? How can you say that? The game has been out for like 2 weeks. Doesn't "classic" involve age?
