As for my personal opinion, BioShock isn't to bad on the creepy side. Condemned and F.E.A.R are far worse.
The game's content is not suitable for a 13 year old. It's rated 'M' for a reason.

im 14 and i played bioshock and i dint think it was that bad a lil creepy at times like guys poping up and just as violent as any other game

I know, I know, but honestly, isn't the M rating a bit broad? I mean, I think Halo (single player wise) is perfectly suitable for a 13 year old, and thats rated M. You can never be sure of the range of content without playing a game.
I am not sure i would suggest that game for a 13 year old. It is very brutal and bloody. From what I have seen I put it on the same level a FEAR.X-7
I think that it may be a little too visceral for a 13 year old. I can say that I had seen Total Recal when I was 10 and I thought it was awsome, but I wouldn't say that it was appropriate for my age at the time. The things you see and do when you are maturing affect who you are when you are an adult. That is my professional opinion as a social worker.

That's a good point. It's tough for me as I'm a parent, with a 6 year old daughter and a 3 year old son. I remember being like 7 or 8 and watching Aliens and Jaws late at night with my mom, way past my bedtime...and watching scary movies never warped me in the head or effected my growth negatively.
But on the subject of Bioshock, I just feel that 13 is too young for the average kid to fully grasp the concepts of human morality that are dealt with in the game. But then again, my opinion is obviously based on a generalization, and it wouldn't be fair to say "ALL" 13 year olds aren't mature enough to play Bioshock, just a majority of the ones I've met or know.
Enough with the "M rating reason".
Seriously, 1 year away from AO? Might as well keep it AO. Anyone else think the should lower M to 14 or 15?

It needs to stay at this because most teenagers are reckless, irresponsible, and don't fully understand the kind of things in a game like this. Now... most of these ratings don't stop them from playing them. Same goes with movies and music.
But if they lower this stuff... it's just not going to make things easier. Loads of ppl are stupid and we need rules like this from preventing chaos. Few kids are mature enough to comprehend the mature themes these movies, games, and music have.

Last time I check theres probably the same number of reckless, irresponsible adults so what should we do? Put a rating on stuff for them aswell? If youre old enough to distinquish the difference between interative entertainment like games, and know the difference between a movie and reality, then you should be able to play M games. Thats why I think they should lower the rating system.[QUOTE="sinistergoggles"][QUOTE="sarmini"]Enough with the "M rating reason".

We'd be doing more harm that good by lowering these rating stuff.

I agree that we need set rules on the video game content, but having the M and AO rating just 1 year apart is completely stupid in my eyes. They could atleast lower it to 15, if not 13 or 14.Depends on the kid, some will be fine, some will think it's the coolest thing ever because it is violent, and the odd one will be creeped out (but by 13 you'd figure they've already seen worse things, unless they are really sheltered by their parents or something). Then again some of the references that might fly over his head: "Looks like someone just got their cherry popped!" but alot of 13 year olds probably already hear and know this stuff just from school.
I mean most kids by 13 could handle the movie 300, not to mention they would probably like the movie more than alot of adults who've seen it (I thought it was pretty bad and I could kill that narrator)...but if they could handle that I'd figure they could handle Bioshock more than likely.
A large part of the appeal of Bioshock is the story, and if your brother is the type that reads adult novels for fun then it might work. But really, my gut feeling is that is an inappropriate game for a 13 year old. I think the M rating can be off in some cases, but not in this one, though I think it should be fine for a 16 year old. Short story: Your brother should stick to Halo style games or adventure until 16.leilamayhem
Agreed
my nephew is 10 and he plays the game regularly, Bioshock isn't that bad but then again I don't know your brother
You slaughter mentaly unstable humanoids. You see very young girls stab old corpses with a syringe and then drink the matter than she sucks up. You get drilled in the stomach buy men in old fashioned scuba suits. You can chose to slaughter young girls by ripping a parasite out of their stomach. You beat a man to death with a golf club. You burn people to death and then after they die you can see their horribly charred bodies. You see someone take a hook and rip the stomach of a man out and hear his guts pouring out of him. You smoke (Smoking is bad). You drink alchoholic beverages. You inject yourself with random chemicals which cause you to have hallucionations of ghosts (Drugs are bad). The environment is very disturbing. The mentaly unstable humanoids have deformed faces and bodies due to injections. One of the bosses is a doctor who slaughters his patients because they are not perfect. There is man who forces you to kill people and then take pictures of their dead bodies for his own disturbed pleasures. A man kills a little puppy. There is blood and rotting corpses all over the world.
I would say that a 13 year old would be able to play this game no problem with only minor neurologic damage.
My brother wants me too buy Bioshock for him for his birthday. I have never player, although am interested in it. It looks kind of creepy, and I was wondering if it would be too much for him too handle. Im not sure what kind of other movies and games he plays, since Im at school most of the time, but on average, would it be too intense for a 13 year old?ThePostalWorker
I think it really just depends on the person, the game definitely has a creepy atmosphere to it, and only a couple jump scares, but overall its not a SCARY game. The storyline is meant for a mature audience though, as is the adult language present in the game. I'm not really sure where your family draws the line when it comes to games, but I can recall a couple of places the F bomb was dropped. If all of that is ok with you guys though, I do think he would still enjoy the game. The gameplay is fun, and I think its one that I'd have enjoyed at 13.
its not to bad for gore or violence. i mean theres blood and such. but the are way gorier games out there.
ultimately its your decision. the game is rated mature for a reason. there is a fair amount of foul language but if he goes to public school then he knows all of it already. there is ALOT of blood and intense sceens. i would recommend reading the reviews about it and looking through the screenshots before making your decision.
my opinion, i played mutch worse back then but then again i was also an EXTREMELY mature 13 year old.
