This is something I have been wondering for a while now. Is DLC getting out of control? Is it being TOO controlled? At first, I thought having more content for games like Oblivion, Fallout, LBP, and Halo 3 was awesome! For fans of those games, who wouldn't want more content to add to their adventures? It's great!

Lately though, I believe some publishers are taking advantage of our DLC. The two biggest ones are Capcom and EA.

What's the first thing we think of when we say DLC? More content. Additional content to what we already have. Downloadable Content (DLC). New Content! I believe Capcom doesn't quite understand this. Lets look at RE5. When I first got RE5, it didn't have online multiplayer versus. This was available to download off of Xbox Live. However, there were reports that you weren't downloading content. You were downloading a code that would unlock THAT content from YOUR PAID disc. That's not downloadable content! That's an underhanded move. I almost bought RE5: Gold edition because it came with all the content I was expecting. However, the game only gave you a coupon to download the content! What if you take your console over to your friends' house and don't have your xbox connected to xbox live? You're screwed! That coupon for your dlc is worthless. There are still some gamers out there that do play games offline! When you advertise on the box of the game, that's what I expect to have in the game! Not a coupon to redeem over xbox live!

Now on to EA. EA published my favorite game of all time: Mass Effect 2. One day, my area had an outage and we had problems connecting to internet. It was some sort of shortage. I can't remember exactly what happened, but we had no internet for a while. During that time, I figured I would play ME2 offline. Well guess what. All that DLC I downloaded on my hard drive wouldn't work. You know why? I NEED to be on Live for that to happen. I can't even play ME2 unless I'm on Live. I can't play a different character or anything. So if I'm not on xbox live, I can't play ME2. That's so cruel and unfair!! I PAID for the dlc, it's on MY hard drive, and I have MY copy of ME2. Quit being a tightwad whenit comes to this stuff Microsoft and EA! Just because I can't be online, I can't play my game. What if I took my console over to my friends house and played it there? Unless I am connected on xbox live, I can't play my game. I can't show him my game! All my dlc I can't show all because I need to be connected to xbox live!!!

What about Madden 11?I borrowed my friend's copy to play on my xbox, guess what? I have to pay $10 if I want to play online. What bullsh*t is this? All because I didn't buy my very own copy, you want to charge me $10 just so I can play online? I was unsure if I wanted to buy it this year, so he let me borrow his copy so I could play it for a bit. I was stunned to find out this "hidden dlc". This is UNACCEPTABLE!!!! Is M$ and EA going to charge me everytime I connect to xbox live too?

Now what about arcade games? I downloaded games like BC: Rearmed, UNO, Carcassonne, and many other games. However, if I'm not on xbox live, I can't play them! Even though I bought them, downloaded them to my hard drive, I STILL can't play them. Why? I need to be connected to xbox live.

I just recently moved so I am awaiting someone to come out and connect me online with internet and cable. During this time though, I can't even play ME2 all because I can't be online. It's not a damaged disc that prevents me from playing. All because I have no online access, they revoke you for playing your game. DLC is getting out of control. Who cares what happens to that DLC that is paid for? You need to have the game first off to even have access to it. Secondly, I paid for it. It's not something stolen. I bought it with my M$ points. It's MY DLC. Is anyone else feeling frustrated at how publishers are trying to charge you any chance they can get? If they can make a penny profit from doing it, they'll do it!

I'm sorry this is a long post, but I would like to get other's opinions on this topic. I think this is a good topic for discussion.

My view of DLC is buy it if you want it. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

This doesn't have anything to do with System Wars, he's talking about DLC in general, and he does have a valid point, I don't think he's complaining about 'having to pay for DLC', when content has been purchased, it should be accessible when you're offline for whatever reason.

And as for content already on the disc but accessed by bought DLC is a bit iffy, but while people keep paying for it, companies will keep making use of it.

And I do agree that DLC coupons are sneaky, but if they can't fit the content onto the existsing disc, they're not going to waste a second disc on something so small.

ya i agree with u but these dlcs are not compulsory. these dlcs are being made for some specific games because fans want more from that game after finishing ther cd. for ex-- the dlcs for gta 4 was pretty costly but rockstar developers knew that the fans would buy it anyway

I do not have that issue with my Mass Effect 2 and playing DLC offline. Only thing I could think of is maybe you are trying to play the DLC on a different gamertag that it is not registered to? Now, I'm not one to defend EA, yes I hate EA, but publisher has nothing to do with DLC. It would be the developer so you ought to point your finger at Bioware, also the middlefinger for selling out to EA. But that being said, yea man I feel ya. What really gets me, and I know this happens because I have a friend who is a Graphics Designer for Lionhead, is when the company develops and finishes the game, they already have made DLC with the finished product. They just sit on it for a month or two then release it to make more money. What can you do though... suck it up and buy it.

thats a nice block you got there, I think I got the jist, sorry If I miss-interpret, but its the moring, and I am not a morning person:

I think you are right, companies are not releasing dlc because the game was successfull, and there is demand for features not included. Now companies have the dlc made, planned and priced before the release of the actual game. Which is pretty exploitatious IMO

Too many text, sorry. The companies are thinking just in the money. They release a game, and few weeks later 2-3 DLC content. It's just pathetic, but this is the way stuff happens.

This really got me mad too. I was just somewhere where I didn't have live for a week, so I figured I'd play some Mass Effect 2. It was really dissapointing to find out that I couldn't even play a single-player game that I've spent $80+ on just because I couldn't connect to live.

I just want to throw in the fact that I have all the DLC for ME2 and I haven't had any problems playing the game if I am not connected to Live.

Shoot2kill1989

Kane and Lynch 2 DLC comes out 2 weeks after release.

It sickens me to see publishers with hold content just to release it later. I refuse to by DLC. especially when its for single player. I just move on to another game. I'll at least wait until they're on sale before I buy. i would be more inclined to buy DLC if the developr also released stuff for free like what bungie does with maps, avatar and wallpaper.

This, its too expensive and common. They need to slow it down. Like bfbc2. People who bought it used missed out on the vip access. or halo 3 making you buy the maps to play on certain playlists.

Wall of text didn't read. LOL

However i will say i hate DLC it is a waste of money for us gamers that actually bought their product... They will give us something for free for pre ordering the game but if we dont pre order but still buy the game we dont get the pre order item? WTF kind of BS is that? DLC on release dates just really ticks me off as well if they are launching DLC at the games launch date they could have just as easily put it in the game before they packaged it.

I don't care if he wants to. He specifically said 4 times that he cannot play at all when he only can't play DLC. And you both are over reacting. If you find a different opinion "extremely annoying", then forums aren't a great place to be.

Yeah i payed to play this game now i cant because i am not online so i cant even play the thing that i payed for in the first place and now i am upset about it is totally over reacting. Its like buying and xbox 360 playing it then downloading a patch only to find out now you cant play your xbox 360 unless you are online. I cant for the life of me figure out what you do not understand about this and how much of a rip off it is. It isn't an opinion you have what you have is a clouded view on games obviously.

I am fine with some DLC. If a person buys the game new then reward them extra. Added more to the game like new missions then that is fine.

Although I do not agree with punishing those by used and force them to pay more to play all the parts of the game. Also those small packs that only let you have new weapons are worthless too.

Game publishers are in the business of making games to make money. If people buy that DLC, they will continue to make it. Considering how many millions of copies of Call of Duty DLC has been sold, people are obviously buying it.

I'll just keep this simple(which would have been nice if topic creator had done the same). If you don't like the price, don't buy it. No game requires you to purchase the DLC in order to play it. Don't bring up Halo 3 because it does not require dlc to be played, it only requires it for some of it's playlists.

I think this is a good topic for discussion.

gr8scott

Wow this is complete b.s I know what you mean man, on read dead redemption they released it with all these glitches and bugs in multiplayer then they are charging us to buy dlc that will solve these problems also adding things like online horse racing, poker and other games that should of been included from the begining. Oh yeah and with the current dlc which I didn't buy because it costs 800 microsoft points and all it gives u is like 8 characters from red dead revolver which you have to unlock first so if your lvl 10 you wont be able to use any of them and a new weapon toma hawk or w.e also you also just get access to more areas to play on in competetive multiplayer modes which should of already been available to everyone and if your friend has the dlc and you dont you cant even see their dlc character all you see is some dude from the ballard gang :l

I'll just keep this simple(which would have been nice if topic creator had done the same). If you don't like the price, don't buy it. No game requires you to purchase the DLC in order to play it. Don't bring up Halo 3 because it does not require dlc to be played, it only requires it for some of it's playlists. vashkey

If you filter through the wall of text, lol... he claims that he bought DLC and cannot play it unless he's connected to LIVE. how you feel about this tactic?

As I actually took the time to read it all, I already said that I basically think that's a cheap move by EA/Bioware, and probably other developers and publishers, we all know that EA do all they can to rip customers off at every given opportunity, including the sales and handling of DLC.

You know, I agree that if we buy some DLC we should be able to use it whenever we want.

However.... Lets think about it from their point of view. If I buy some DLC and am NOT required to be logged in to use it, then what would stop me from transfering content to another HDD and giving it to friends for free... Or selling it for that matter?

Pirating is a serious problem that they are combating by using this tactic.

That being said, it IS time for change in the way things are done, but I am not a programmer and have ni idea about the logistics of such a project.

As for the RE5 issue, agreed. That does seem pretty shady of Capcom. I have not played that game so was not aware of that.

I liked the way Halo 2 did it. They offered downloadable maps at a price then later offered the disc version and eventually it was free and not tied into being online at all.

With Steam on PC, it's my understanding that you can opt to use that offline, for up to 30 days at a time, at which time, it will check online and verify the games and their content etc, and if it can't check, then it will not work. and it will check each time it's started up, so that's one way of doing it.

I might have the wrong end of the stick on how it actually works, but even still that's how Ithink it should be done, not a permanent allowance to play offline, but a measured one. :)

No you are under reacting. Ok he didn't have to buy it BUT HE DID. Yeah he can't play his DLC but HE WANTS TO! How you can't see why this is BS is extremely annoying...

ZzZEVOLUTIONZzZ

Let me explain this to you. In your opinion and OP's, DLCs are getting out of control. In my opinion, they aren't. Never had a problem with any of them, and I frequently buy them. It is overreacting if you exaggerate the issue by falsely claiming that you can't play the game in it's entirety. And then applying an isolated incident to an entire company (had two DLC problems, so that company that makes hundreds of games is out of control). And once again, exaggerating my opinion on just DLCto make it my "view on games" in general. You and OP both overreact and exaggerate like crazy.

My view of DLC is buy it if you want it. If you don't want it, don't buy it.x-2tha-z
you missed his entire post. He is saying games used to come with features that now are needed to be downloaded and paid for (multiplayer) and he is also saying that it sucks if you can't connect to the internet (lets face it, nobody has 100% connection at all time) you can't play for the DLC even though you paid for it. Read before posting PLEASE!

OP i totally agree.

With the fact that it is out of hand, and that some companies are doing shady business, you can really tell the companies that are holding back content just to release it a few weeks after the game comes out and it needs to stop, just included it on the disc for Thor's sake what are we paying you people $60 a copy for, doesn't your industry pull in enough billions already!? And don't tell me new costumes for my characters is downloadable content, don't get me wrong i love capcom and street fighter but costumes were something you used to unlock in game by playing and beating it, not by paying an extra $7.99 to download. Just include it in the game!

Also allow people to play their dlc offline, its insulting. First you don't include the content in the game, then you make us pay to download it, then we MUST be online to access and play it,..... get outta here.

First of all, Thank you for those who read this long post. Thank you more so for your contributions. I am glad to see many people share the same view as I do in regards to this. I do believe there is DLC done right. For example, Oblivion's Shivering Isles, Fallout 3 add ons, and GTA 4 expansions. It's a lot of new content. The thing with the Madden is what finally set me off. Why should I pay to play online? Just because I borrowed my friend's copy, I can't play online? Why restrict me? I know companies and publishers want to make maximum profit, but there are some cheap and underhanded moves that publishers don't take into consideration. This only makes the gamers feel like they are getting nickeled and dimed. Now a days, you dont spend $60 for a game. With all the DLC you download for a specific game, you could easily spend over $80 just for one game. Isn't that a lot just for one game? I bought fallout 3 and all 5 expansions which totalled up to $110. There are a lot of very good points people have made. Once again, I am sorry this post was so long, but a big thank you for all of those who read it. I just wanted to make sure I got my point across and said what I wanted to say.

No, you really can't play it. If you have a save that included the DLC and try to load it without live in ME2, it will not load your game. You can only start an entirely new game.

Thanks for the confirmation. I've downloaded all of the free DLC but haven't played the game yet. I'm guessing the DLC will be loaded on my first start through even though I didn't select them yet? Is there even an option of deselecting them?

This is true, and in a game like oblivion instead of making you start a new game they just take away anything that was added by dlc if you are offline, i.e you cant access the shivering isles or use any weapons items or armor you might have picked up while there if you are not online! which again is very aggravating. Sometimes the game wont even load your save if it contains dlc and your offline it will just freeze the system once you try to load it. (although these are the only complaints i have about oblivion and i blame them far more on microsoft then i do on bethesda)

The whole paying for something that was already on the disc is pure 100% robbery. Thats like buying a car with A/C and the dealer puts a lock on the button and makes you come pay him to have it unlocked.

Once again, everyone has some very good points. I like your comparision JUST1N-. If the content is already on your hard drive (lets say Shivering Isles from Oblivion), why can't you play it offline? Do you really HAVE to be online if the dlc is already on your hard drive? It's such an inconvenience. I sometimes take my XBox over to my friends house so we can play games there on his TV. We usually play Gears of War co-op on insanity. So there are times when my xbox isn't connected to Live. However, I can't show him ME2 unless I hook my xbox up to the internet. As of now, I have the one that doesn't have wifi so that will involve more wires to run through the house. This is such a problem. One person mentioned that M$ does this to prevent dlc from being transfered from one hard drive to another via transfer cable. Well my input is this. If I download dlc to my hard drive, no one but my gamertag should be allowed to play it. I think there is a more efficient way of handling this. Madden's new way of trying to get every penny from you is the last straw for me. It's not enough that I have XBox Live and a copy of Madden 11. I need a NEW copy of Madden 11 in order to play online. I really hope this trend doesn't continue with other games. This is the lowest and cheapest move from EA. My friend and I borrow each other's games sometimes in order to play games and save money from buying the same game. For example, if he buys alan wake, he'll let me borrow it once he's done. Just because I have his copy of madden, I can't play online even though I have a legit copy of the game and XBox Live Gold. I'm drawing the dlc tolorance right there. That's abusing DLC. Now I find it funny that gamespot and ign both uncovered this: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6274384.html?tag=latestheadlines%3Btitle%3B2

It kind of is. Mafia II came out yesterday, right? And it already has a DLC for $9.99. That's pretty ridiculous.

I don't agree with most of what you said, for example the RE5 Versus mode already being on the disc was a false rumor, people just though that because of the small download size but actually, it was such a small download because it reused all existing models and environments and just used more code. It was actually made a while after the game was released.

Also the ME2 DLC, they have good reasons for that which will take too long to explain and I feel too lazy to explain.

But I do agree with you on the madden online part although it is to help the company from used game sales and renting which apparently actually hurts sales pretty significantly but I still think its too much.
