I mean take F.E.A.R. for example, yeah sorta creepy, but not scary. People say fear 2 will be even more scary...

I would love nothing more then for a game to scare the freaking crap outta me.

Dead Space did a good job. I mean having an enemy come at you when your back is turned and then its right there... yeah kudos for Dead Space. And I hope Fear 2 is scary too :)

I have not really gotten into the demo of FEAR 2, but is it scary at all?

well if having a enemy at your back scares you, you need some nerves. And its mostly the sound+color of the game that does it for me.. More realistic = more immersive= scary

f.e.a.r. didn't scare me at all...the only games that actually did make me jump a little were the fatal frame series (playing in the dark)...and the mannequin part in condemned (also playing in the dark)

I agree 100% that it's mainly the music and detail (tearing flesh, etc) that makes a game very scary. Any game can have a "scary moment," but without the right music and detail, it might not be the same.

i loved both dead space and fear, but I actually found Fear more creepy cuz of the atmosphere and the fact that no matter what, u cant deal with alma using only a gun

I guess having some sort of high powered arsenal at my disposal with which to blast away at any undead/demon or who knows what takes away from the feeling for me. Makes me feel in control and thus it takes a lot more to phase me.

If you thought Dead Space was really scary, then you obviously have a taste for western horror, which to me is not really scary at all. Japanese horror to me is as good as it'll get, Silent Hill and Fatal Frame will make you pee your pants, constantly.

Yes dead space, but i think everything is partly a mind-set thing. If you focused on enemies as opposed to storyline in dead space, i don't think anyone would find it quite as frightening :P Scared the holy stuff outta me though! :D -Richie

That's the "monster in the closet" formula you're talking about, it's easily done, and doesn't need much thinking, more like cheap than good to me, play Condemned 2 or Doom 3 for that, both Fear 1 and 2 are more action focused, they have some scary parts though, like when Alma came crawling towards me out of the dark, in Mission 6 i think, in the offices part.

Or the ghost haunting you in the hospital, in the FEAR 2 demo.

I didnt really find F.E.A.R. scary and Dead Space i found myself predicting everytime an enemy would pop up. Scary the first 5 times but it just repeats after, I dont know if you play PC games but theres this game called Penumbra (theres 2 episodes). crazy creepy atmosphere and not mindless shoot move shoot move..its that "what the hell was that!" creepy, scaring you more and more as the game goes. Realtime physics. Innovative use of mouse movements such as opening doors with a swipe motion (so you can open a door slowly or swing it open). Any PC users out there that is looking for a next good scare should DEF check it out.. Sometimes the best scares are the ones that are unknown.

Condemned got to me. Mainly the last cutscene before credits roll. Don;t sit to close to your TV. Resident Evil 2 was my first scary game though. I was goin to the 8th grade. Got it for my B-day right when it came out. Scared the crap outta me.

Condemned 2 was so scary to me, I got thru the first few chapters and then traded it in. I just couldnt play it without being rattled. Really.

I dont know what it was. I play on a 51 inch HDTV with 5.1 surround sound....plus I only play at night when I get off work. From 11 til. So I would be crawling thru the level...inch by inch. I just got outdone and traded it.

Condemned 2 has it's moments for sure gets less scary in the last chapter though. But the middle section of the game has plenty of frights, you should pick it up and don't watch any spoilers or you'll ruin the tension for yourself.

Dead space scared the crap outta me! I usually don't get rattled by games, but I just freaked out. I mean, knowing something was out there, and not knowing where it was just freaked me out... :?

I feel that to get the full "scariness" out of a game, you need to play it by yourself, in the dark, with no other noises, in surround sound.

I think that the only games that can be really scary are ones that are somewhat immersive. They have to draw you in so far that you don't feel like your playing a game. I found that Condemned: Criminal Origins did a great job of that. While it wasn't "scary" per se, it was definitely one of the most intense gaming experiences ever.

I think some people are lying when they say games aren't scary. I remember talking to a friend while playing FEAR the second time through and when you get to the first ladder I knew it was coming and wasn't phased at all. I told him "I remembered tha-" and then just froze mid-sentence when I got to the bottom of the ladder and saw something else. "I didn't remember that"

Another time I was walking down a hall and a guy flew through a window and smashed against a wall. I tensed up and my friend said "When did that guy get there?"

The FEAR 2 demo freaked me smooth out.

Wow. You found Dead Space scary, but not F.E.A.R?

Dead Space isn't a scary game. It's all just startles here and there (like an alien jumping out of nowhere). F.E.A.R on the other hand used it's atmosphere and horror sequences to put a real scare in you.
