I love my HD-DVD player and see it as an essential part of my 360 setup. There is a massive difference between DVD and HD-DVD. With some of the deals going at the moment you should be picking one up ASAP!

If you're not interested in BD, then HDDVD isnt going to help you much either.

See I am staying out of this war until someone proves to be a winner or we move to a universal format, just don't like the idea of watching only some movies on Hi-Def when I own a ton of regular DVDs.

....or... he can go the non-illegal route and download movies from XBL. Anyway, I would say that the $180 would be better spent on the 120GB HDD, but if you already have it, then I suppose an HD-DVD player would be nice to have. I'm not a big movie buff, so moving up to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray isn't really a priority. I am however getting increasingly annoyed at the low resolution of DVDs since I've gotten accustomed with HD cable programming.

Why didnt microsoft include it with the 360? Also would it be worth it, you have to have more space for it.

when the new format war started i was supporting both sides. now i have started supporting HD whenever possible. Because 80 percent of the time movies have looked better on HD DVD. Especially movies high in specail effects such as 300 really look a step above their blue ray counterpart. I am not sure why this is but i have had people over at my place and played a copy of both disks and asked what looked better and others choose the HD DVD format without knowing that is what it is. My cousin swore by blueray until they started messing with my HD DVD movies. All around movies have just been better on the HD DVD format. The movies look stunning!

it is well worth the money now the likes of paramount and dreamworks have said they are no longer supporting blue ray. No transformers no shrek 3 for them only HD-DVD and dvd only. It looks the dogs nuts sat next to my 360 the best add on for a console i have ever bought

I can't believe I ever lived without an HD DVD player. Also, it's even better with Netflix.

I just picked up the HD add-on last week. Amazon.com has a deal going on this month where you can get 3 free movies at the time of your purchase, and not only that, but you also get 5 free movies by mail-in rebate as well. So I got the player, the pack-in King Kong, 300 and Batman Begins. Than in a couple months I should receive Appolo 13, Blazing Saddles, The Perfect Storm, Constantine and one other(I forgot what I chose from the list). All this for just the price of the player which is $180.

I started watching King Kong the other day and it looks amazing. I've heard Batman and 300 look awesome too in HD so I'm looking forward to popping those in when I have time. So I guess you can say I'm really happy with my purchase. And oh yeah, because Paramount has an exclusive deal with Toshiba for a while, the only way you'll see Transformers in HD is on HD-DVD, and that is the one movie I'm looking forward to the most coming out this holiday season. :)

Why in the world would he be interested in Blu-ray when he can buy an HD-DVD drive for $179? :|

hd wmv's ripped from an original disc you own of course ;)

microsoft not including a hd-dvd drive was a great idea; keeps price down + also wont wear out laser in 6 months, all that usage for films + dvds will eat lasers like old ps2 days

To those saying to wait until the format war is over, this is ridiculous. It won't be over soon, if ever at all! Both camp are going strong, are highly backed and backfires at eachother on a weekly basis. They probably will both survive till the end.

Having a 360 (elite preferably) with a HD-DVD and a PS3 with included Blu-Ray is marvelous. I would have both consoles anyway. So a few hundreds more to enjoy both 1080p formats is just plain awesome. I love both.

As for if it's worth it for you. That depends how much/often you enjoy watching dvd's. If you have a 1080p TV and an Elite, it's a no brainer though. If not, like i said, it depends how much you're into movies. I actually held on watching my HD-DVD's until today, i just bought an Elite finally! :)

Well it depends on whether or not you are willing to risk losing when the format war is over. I would say the best bet is to buy both an HD DVD player and blu ray. I don't want to be left with a format no one will use anymore. Also, for me, it is about the movies. Most of the movies I want are on blue ray or only blu ray.

I love my HD-DVD player, and I'm already looking forward to getting Transformers and The Bourne Ultimatum on HD-DVD when they are released
