it doesn't matter, as long as you have sufficient space around it for ventilation

laying down might be safer if you have little kids running around or if you have a wired controller that could be tripped over

Depends i guess i have mine verticaly so it fits next to my TV but mainly it has to do with the breathing rom you give it.

well one time i was wondering what it would be like to have my 360 standing up, so i powered it up stood it up i tookout a gameput it inthen i closed the tray then suddenly u could here this scratching kind of sound, it didnt do any damage but i dont think im gonna be standing it up anytime soon

when i had mine vertical i noticed that the disk turned a bit because it was hanging out a little and it hits thetop(side of 360 if standing)of the 360, but maybe the placei have is not level.

it dosent matter really..when its vertical it has a chance to fall over and scratch the disc. but if you have it in a secure location where it most likely wont happen then i think its safe. at first i had mine horizontal but now i keep it vertical because of the set-up in my room. so either way is fine..its just the way it fits in your set up

Some people will tell you laying down but i have always had mine standing up and the only time it has scratched my disks is when i had it not in my room and my little brother tripped over the av cord and it tipped over.
