Mass Effect renegade ?

Just wondering if you are playing hte renegade side do you still try to answer the questions or do you just choose the bottom option every time? I started out playing hte game and through the citadel I was tring to answer each question the way I might and I just ended up being way too nice and had all these side quests and it was ridiculous. Since then I've just been answering everything at the bottom and its more fun and the game is going quicker but I feel like i'm missing out on stuff. Just wondering what the best approach is.

the majority of your choices and how much side quests you do will determine the amount of renegade points you will collect
